[rv-1-24] • 15 श्लोकाः

कस्य नूनं कतमस्यामृतानां मनामहे चारु देवस्य नाम । को नो मह्या अदितये पुनर्दात्पितरं च दृशेयं मातरं च ॥

kasya nūnaṃ katamasyāmṛtānāṃ manāmahe cāru devasya nāma | ko no mahyā aditaye punardātpitaraṃ ca dṛśeyaṃ mātaraṃ ca ||

Of whom, or of which divinity of the immortals, shall we invoke the auspicious name? who will give us to the great Aditi that I may again behold my father and my mother.

अग्नेर्वयं प्रथमस्यामृतानां मनामहे चारु देवस्य नाम । स नो मह्या अदितये पुनर्दात्पितरं च दृशेयं मातरं च ॥

agnervayaṃ prathamasyāmṛtānāṃ manāmahe cāru devasya nāma | sa no mahyā aditaye punardātpitaraṃ ca dṛśeyaṃ mātaraṃ ca ||

Let us invoke the auspicious name of Agni, the first divinity of the immortals, that he may give us to the great Aditi, and that I may behold agin my father and my mother.

अभि त्वा देव सवितरीशानं वार्याणाम् । सदावन्भागमीमहे ॥

abhi tvā deva savitarīśānaṃ vāryāṇām | sadāvanbhāgamīmahe ||

Ever-protecting Savitā, we solicit (our) portion of you, who are the lord of affluence.

यश्चिद्धि त इत्था भगः शशमानः पुरा निदः । अद्वेषो हस्तयोर्दधे ॥

yaściddhi ta itthā bhagaḥ śaśamānaḥ purā nidaḥ | adveṣo hastayordadhe ||

That wealth which has been retained in your hands, and is entitled to commendation, as exempt from envy or reproach.

भगभक्तस्य ते वयमुदशेम तवावसा । मूर्धानं राय आरभे ॥

bhagabhaktasya te vayamudaśema tavāvasā | mūrdhānaṃ rāya ārabhe ||

We are assiduous in attaining the summit of affluence, through the protection of you, who are the possessor of wealth.

नहि ते क्षत्रं न सहो न मन्युं वयश्चनामी पतयन्त आपुः । नेमा आपो अनिमिषं चरन्तीर्न ये वातस्य प्रमिनन्त्यभ्वम् ॥

nahi te kṣatraṃ na saho na manyuṃ vayaścanāmī patayanta āpuḥ | nemā āpo animiṣaṃ carantīrna ye vātasya praminantyabhvam ||

These birds, that are flying (through the air), have not obtained, Varuṇa, your bodily strength or your prowess, or (are able to endure your) wrath; neither do these waters that flow increasingly, nor (do the gales) of wind, surpass your speed.

अबुध्ने राजा वरुणो वनस्योर्ध्वं स्तूपं ददते पूतदक्षः । नीचीनाः स्थुरुपरि बुध्न एषामस्मे अन्तर्निहिताः केतवः स्युः ॥

abudhne rājā varuṇo vanasyordhvaṃ stūpaṃ dadate pūtadakṣaḥ | nīcīnāḥ sthurupari budhna eṣāmasme antarnihitāḥ ketavaḥ syuḥ ||

The regal Varuṇa, of pure vigour (abiding) in the baseless (firmament), sustains on high a heap of light, the rays (of which) are pointed downwards, while their base is above; may they become concentrated in us as the sources of existence.

उरुं हि राजा वरुणश्चकार सूर्याय पन्थामन्वेतवा उ । अपदे पादा प्रतिधातवेऽकरुतापवक्ता हृदयाविधश्चित् ॥

uruṃ hi rājā varuṇaścakāra sūryāya panthāmanvetavā u | apade pādā pratidhātave'karutāpavaktā hṛdayāvidhaścit ||

The regal Varuṇa verily made with the path of the sun, (by which) to travel on his daily course; a path to traverse in pathless (space); may he be the repeller of every afflicter of the heart.

शतं ते राजन्भिषजः सहस्रमुर्वी गभीरा सुमतिष्टे अस्तु । बाधस्व दूरे निॠतिं पराचैः कृतं चिदेनः प्र मुमुग्ध्यस्मत् ॥

śataṃ te rājanbhiṣajaḥ sahasramurvī gabhīrā sumatiṣṭe astu | bādhasva dūre niṝtiṃ parācaiḥ kṛtaṃ cidenaḥ pra mumugdhyasmat ||

Yours, O king, are a hundred and a thousand medicaments; may your favour, comprehensive and profound, be (with us); keep afar from us Nirṛti, with unfriendly looks, and liberate us from whatever sin we may have committed.

अमी य ऋक्षा निहितास उच्चा नक्तं ददृश्रे कुह चिद्दिवेयुः । अदब्धानि वरुणस्य व्रतानि विचाकशच्चन्द्रमा नक्तमेति ॥

amī ya ṛkṣā nihitāsa uccā naktaṃ dadṛśre kuha ciddiveyuḥ | adabdhāni varuṇasya vratāni vicākaśaccandramā naktameti ||

These constellations plural ced on high, which are visible by night, and go elsewhere by day, are the undisturbed holy acts of Varuṇa (and by his command) the moon moves resplendent by night.

तत्त्वा यामि ब्रह्मणा वन्दमानस्तदा शास्ते यजमानो हविर्भिः । अहेऴमानो वरुणेह बोध्युरुशंस मा न आयुः प्र मोषीः ॥

tattvā yāmi brahmaṇā vandamānastadā śāste yajamāno havirbhiḥ | aheḻamāno varuṇeha bodhyuruśaṃsa mā na āyuḥ pra moṣīḥ ||

Praising you with (devout) prayer, I implore you for that (life) which the instrumental tutor of the sacrifice solicits with oblations; Varuṇa, undisdainful, bestow a thought upon us; much-lauded, take not away our existence.

तदिन्नक्तं तद्दिवा मह्यमाहुस्तदयं केतो हृद आ वि चष्टे । शुनःशेपो यमह्वद्गृभीतः सो अस्मान्राजा वरुणो मुमोक्तु ॥

tadinnaktaṃ taddivā mahyamāhustadayaṃ keto hṛda ā vi caṣṭe | śunaḥśepo yamahvadgṛbhītaḥ so asmānrājā varuṇo mumoktu ||

This (your praise) they repeat to me by night and by day; this knowledge speaks to my heart; may he whom the fettered Śunahśepas has invoked, may the regal Varuṇa set us free.

शुनःशेपो ह्यह्वद्गृभीतस्त्रिष्वादित्यं द्रुपदेषु बद्धः । अवैनं राजा वरुणः ससृज्याद्विद्वाँ अदब्धो वि मुमोक्तु पाशान् ॥

śunaḥśepo hyahvadgṛbhītastriṣvādityaṃ drupadeṣu baddhaḥ | avainaṃ rājā varuṇaḥ sasṛjyādvidvā~ adabdho vi mumoktu pāśān ||

Śunahśepas, seized and bound to the three-footed tree, has invoked the son of Aditi; may the regal Varuṇa, wise and irresistible, liberate him; may he let loose his bonds.

अव ते हेऴो वरुण नमोभिरव यज्ञेभिरीमहे हविर्भिः । क्षयन्नस्मभ्यमसुर प्रचेता राजन्नेनांसि शिश्रथः कृतानि ॥

ava te heḻo varuṇa namobhirava yajñebhirīmahe havirbhiḥ | kṣayannasmabhyamasura pracetā rājannenāṃsi śiśrathaḥ kṛtāni ||

Varuṇa, we deprecate your wrath with prostrations, with sacrifices, with oblations; averter of misfortune, wise and illustrious, be present amongst us, and mitigate the evils we have committed.

उदुत्तमं वरुण पाशमस्मदवाधमं वि मध्यमं श्रथाय । अथा वयमादित्य व्रते तवानागसो अदितये स्याम ॥

uduttamaṃ varuṇa pāśamasmadavādhamaṃ vi madhyamaṃ śrathāya | athā vayamāditya vrate tavānāgaso aditaye syāma ||

Varuṇa, loosen for me the upper, the middle, the lower band; so, son of Aditi, shall we, through faultlessness in the worship, become freed from siṇ
