[rv-1-23] • 24 श्लोकाः

तीव्राः सोमास आ गह्याशीर्वन्तः सुता इमे । वायो तान्प्रस्थितान्पिब ॥

tīvrāḥ somāsa ā gahyāśīrvantaḥ sutā ime | vāyo tānprasthitānpiba ||

These sharp and blessing-bearing Soma juices are poured out; come, Vāyu, and drink of them as presented.

उभा देवा दिविस्पृशेन्द्रवायू हवामहे । अस्य सोमस्य पीतये ॥

ubhā devā divispṛśendravāyū havāmahe | asya somasya pītaye ||

We invoke both the divinities abiding in heaven, Indra and Vāyu, to drink of this Soma juice.

इन्द्रवायू मनोजुवा विप्रा हवन्त ऊतये । सहस्राक्षा धियस्पती ॥

indravāyū manojuvā viprā havanta ūtaye | sahasrākṣā dhiyaspatī ||

The wise invoke, for their preservation, Indra and Vāyu, who are swift as thought, have a thousand eyes, and are protectors of pious acts.

मित्रं वयं हवामहे वरुणं सोमपीतये । जज्ञाना पूतदक्षसा ॥

mitraṃ vayaṃ havāmahe varuṇaṃ somapītaye | jajñānā pūtadakṣasā ||

We invoke Mitra and Varuṇa, becoming present at the sacrifice, and of pure strength, to drink the Soma juice.

ऋतेन यावृतावृधावृतस्य ज्योतिषस्पती । ता मित्रावरुणा हुवे ॥

ṛtena yāvṛtāvṛdhāvṛtasya jyotiṣaspatī | tā mitrāvaruṇā huve ||

I invoke Mitra and Varuṇa, who with true speech, are the encouragers of pious acts, and are lords of true lighṭ

वरुणः प्राविता भुवन्मित्रो विश्वाभिरूतिभिः । करतां नः सुराधसः ॥

varuṇaḥ prāvitā bhuvanmitro viśvābhirūtibhiḥ | karatāṃ naḥ surādhasaḥ ||

May Varuṇa be our especial protector; may Mitra defend us with all defences; may they make us most opulent.

मरुत्वन्तं हवामह इन्द्रमा सोमपीतये । सजूर्गणेन तृम्पतु ॥

marutvantaṃ havāmaha indramā somapītaye | sajūrgaṇena tṛmpatu ||

We invoke Indra, attended by the Maruts to drink the Soma juice; may he, with his associates, be satisfied.

इन्द्रज्येष्ठा मरुद्गणा देवासः पूषरातयः । विश्वे मम श्रुता हवम् ॥

indrajyeṣṭhā marudgaṇā devāsaḥ pūṣarātayaḥ | viśve mama śrutā havam ||

Divine Maruts, of whom Indra is the chief and Pūṣan is the donor, or benefactor; in what way, is not specified.

हत वृत्रं सुदानव इन्द्रेण सहसा युजा । मा नो दुःशंस ईशत ॥

hata vṛtraṃ sudānava indreṇa sahasā yujā | mā no duḥśaṃsa īśata ||

Liberal donors, along with the mighty and associated Indra, destroy Vṛtra; let not the evil one prevail against us.

विश्वान्देवान्हवामहे मरुतः सोमपीतये । उग्रा हि पृश्निमातरः ॥

viśvāndevānhavāmahe marutaḥ somapītaye | ugrā hi pṛśnimātaraḥ ||

We invoke all the divine Maruts, who are fierce, and have the (many- coloured) earth for their mother, to drink the Soma juice.

जयतामिव तन्यतुर्मरुतामेति धृष्णुया । यच्छुभं याथना नरः ॥

jayatāmiva tanyaturmarutāmeti dhṛṣṇuyā | yacchubhaṃ yāthanā naraḥ ||

Whenever, leaders (of men), you accept an auspicious (offering), then the shout of the Maruts spreads with exultation, like (that) of conquerors.

हस्काराद्विद्युतस्पर्यतो जाता अवन्तु नः । मरुतो मृऴयन्तु नः ॥

haskārādvidyutasparyato jātā avantu naḥ | maruto mṛḻayantu naḥ ||

May the Maruts, born from the brilliant lightning, everywhere preserve us, and make us happy.

आ पूषञ्चित्रबर्हिषमाघृणे धरुणं दिवः । आजा नष्टं यथा पशुम् ॥

ā pūṣañcitrabarhiṣamāghṛṇe dharuṇaṃ divaḥ | ājā naṣṭaṃ yathā paśum ||

Resplendent and (swift) moving Pūṣan, bring from heaven the Soma juice, in combination with the variegated sacred grass, as (a man brings back) an animal that was lost.

पूषा राजानमाघृणिरपगूऴ्हं गुहा हितम् । अविन्दच्चित्रबर्हिषम् ॥

pūṣā rājānamāghṛṇirapagūḻhaṃ guhā hitam | avindaccitrabarhiṣam ||

The resplendent Pūṣan has found the royal (Soma juice), although concealed, hidden in a secret plural ce, strewed amongst the sacred grass.

उतो स मह्यमिन्दुभिः षड्युक्ताँ अनुसेषिधत् । गोभिर्यवं न चर्कृषत् ॥

uto sa mahyamindubhiḥ ṣaḍyuktā~ anuseṣidhat | gobhiryavaṃ na carkṛṣat ||

Verily he has brought to me successively the six (seasons), connected with the drops (of the Soma juice) as (a husbandsman) repeatedly plural ughs (the earth) for barley.

अम्बयो यन्त्यध्वभिर्जामयो अध्वरीयताम् । पृञ्चतीर्मधुना पयः ॥

ambayo yantyadhvabhirjāmayo adhvarīyatām | pṛñcatīrmadhunā payaḥ ||

Mothers to us, who are desirous of sacrificing, the kindred (waters) flow by the paths (of sacrifice) qualifying the milk (of kine) with sweetnesṣ

अमूर्या उप सूर्ये याभिर्वा सूर्यः सह । ता नो हिन्वन्त्वध्वरम् ॥

amūryā upa sūrye yābhirvā sūryaḥ saha | tā no hinvantvadhvaram ||

May those waters which are contiguous to the Sun, and those with which the Sun is associated, be propitious to our rite.

अपो देवीरुप ह्वये यत्र गावः पिबन्ति नः । सिन्धुभ्यः कर्त्वं हविः ॥

apo devīrupa hvaye yatra gāvaḥ pibanti naḥ | sindhubhyaḥ kartvaṃ haviḥ ||

Invoke the divine waters in which our cattle drink; offer oblations to the following (streams).

अप्स्वन्तरमृतमप्सु भेषजमपामुत प्रशस्तये । देवा भवत वाजिनः ॥

apsvantaramṛtamapsu bheṣajamapāmuta praśastaye | devā bhavata vājinaḥ ||

Ambrosia is in the waters; in the waters are medicinal herbs; therefore, divine (priest), be prompt in their praise.

अप्सु मे सोमो अब्रवीदन्तर्विश्वानि भेषजा । अग्निं च विश्वशम्भुवमापश्च विश्वभेषजीः ॥

apsu me somo abravīdantarviśvāni bheṣajā | agniṃ ca viśvaśambhuvamāpaśca viśvabheṣajīḥ ||

Soma has declared to me, 'all medicaments, as well as Agni, the benefactor of the universe, are in the waters'; the waters, contain all healing herbs.

आपः पृणीत भेषजं वरूथं तन्वे मम । ज्योक्च सूर्यं दृशे ॥

āpaḥ pṛṇīta bheṣajaṃ varūthaṃ tanve mama | jyokca sūryaṃ dṛśe ||

Waters, bring to perfection all disease-dispelling medicaments for (the good of) my body, that I may long behold the sun.

इदमापः प्र वहत यत्किं च दुरितं मयि । यद्वाहमभिदुद्रोह यद्वा शेप उतानृतम् ॥

idamāpaḥ pra vahata yatkiṃ ca duritaṃ mayi | yadvāhamabhidudroha yadvā śepa utānṛtam ||

Waters, take away whatever sin has been (found) in me whether I have (knowingly) done wrong, or have pronounced imprecations (against holy men) or (have spoken) untruth.

आपो अद्यान्वचारिषं रसेन समगस्महि । पयस्वानग्न आ गहि तं मा सं सृज वर्चसा ॥

āpo adyānvacāriṣaṃ rasena samagasmahi | payasvānagna ā gahi taṃ mā saṃ sṛja varcasā ||

I have this day entered into the waters; we have mingled with their essence; Agni, abiding in the waters, approach, and fill me, thus (bathed), with vigour.

सं माग्ने वर्चसा सृज सं प्रजया समायुषा । विद्युर्मे अस्य देवा इन्द्रो विद्यात्सह ऋषिभिः ॥

saṃ māgne varcasā sṛja saṃ prajayā samāyuṣā | vidyurme asya devā indro vidyātsaha ṛṣibhiḥ ||

Agni, confer upon me vigour, progeny and life, so that the gods may know the (sacrifice) of this my (employer), and Indra with the Ṛṣis, may know it.
