[rv-1-22] • 21 श्लोकाः

प्रातर्युजा वि बोधयाश्विनावेह गच्छताम् । अस्य सोमस्य पीतये ॥

prātaryujā vi bodhayāśvināveha gacchatām | asya somasya pītaye ||

Awaken, the Aśvins, associated for the morning sacrifice; let them both come hither to drink of this Soma juice.

या सुरथा रथीतमोभा देवा दिविस्पृशा । अश्विना ता हवामहे ॥

yā surathā rathītamobhā devā divispṛśā | aśvinā tā havāmahe ||

We invoke the two Aśvins, who are both divine, the best of charioteers, riding in an excellent car and attaining heaven.

या वां कशा मधुमत्यश्विना सूनृतावती । तया यज्ञं मिमिक्षतम् ॥

yā vāṃ kaśā madhumatyaśvinā sūnṛtāvatī | tayā yajñaṃ mimikṣatam ||

Aśvins, stir up (mimikṣatam = mix intimately, rapidly like a whip) the sacrifice with your whip that is wet the foam (of your horses), and lashing loudly.

नहि वामस्ति दूरके यत्रा रथेन गच्छथः । अश्विना सोमिनो गृहम् ॥

nahi vāmasti dūrake yatrā rathena gacchathaḥ | aśvinā somino gṛham ||

The abode of the offerer of the libation is not far from you, Aśvins, going thither in your car.

हिरण्यपाणिमूतये सवितारमुप ह्वये । स चेत्ता देवता पदम् ॥

hiraṇyapāṇimūtaye savitāramupa hvaye | sa cettā devatā padam ||

Invoke Savitā (Sun), the golden- handed, to protect me; he will appoint the station of the worshippers.

अपां नपातमवसे सवितारमुप स्तुहि । तस्य व्रतान्युश्मसि ॥

apāṃ napātamavase savitāramupa stuhi | tasya vratānyuśmasi ||

Glorify Savitā, who is no friend to water, or our protection; we desire to celebrate his worship.(apām napāt = son of the waters).

विभक्तारं हवामहे वसोश्चित्रस्य राधसः । सवितारं नृचक्षसम् ॥

vibhaktāraṃ havāmahe vasościtrasya rādhasaḥ | savitāraṃ nṛcakṣasam ||

We invoke Savitā, the enlightener of men, the dispenser of various home-insuring wealth.

सखाय आ नि षीदत सविता स्तोम्यो नु नः । दाता राधांसि शुम्भति ॥

sakhāya ā ni ṣīdata savitā stomyo nu naḥ | dātā rādhāṃsi śumbhati ||

Sit down, friends; Savitā verily is to be praised by us, for he is the giver of riches.

अग्ने पत्नीरिहा वह देवानामुशतीरुप । त्वष्टारं सोमपीतये ॥

agne patnīrihā vaha devānāmuśatīrupa | tvaṣṭāraṃ somapītaye ||

Agni, bring hither the loving wives of the gods, and Tvaṣṭā, to drink the Soma juice.

आ ग्ना अग्न इहावसे होत्रां यविष्ठ भारतीम् । वरूत्रीं धिषणां वह ॥

ā gnā agna ihāvase hotrāṃ yaviṣṭha bhāratīm | varūtrīṃ dhiṣaṇāṃ vaha ||

Youthful Agni, bring hither for our protection the wives (of the gods), Hotrā (wife of Agni or person nified invocation), Bhāratī (an Āditya), Varutrī (= varaṇīyā, chosen), and Dhiṣaṇā (= vāc or vāg-devī, goddess of speech).

अभि नो देवीरवसा महः शर्मणा नृपत्नीः । अच्छिन्नपत्राः सचन्ताम् ॥

abhi no devīravasā mahaḥ śarmaṇā nṛpatnīḥ | acchinnapatrāḥ sacantām ||

May the goddesses, whose wings are unclipt the protectresses of mankind, favour us with perfection, and with entire felicity.

इहेन्द्राणीमुप ह्वये वरुणानीं स्वस्तये । अग्नायीं सोमपीतये ॥

ihendrāṇīmupa hvaye varuṇānīṃ svastaye | agnāyīṃ somapītaye ||

Invoke hither, Indrāṇī, Varuṇānī, and Agnāyī, for our welfare, and to drink the Soma juice.

मही द्यौः पृथिवी च न इमं यज्ञं मिमिक्षताम् । पिपृतां नो भरीमभिः ॥

mahī dyauḥ pṛthivī ca na imaṃ yajñaṃ mimikṣatām | pipṛtāṃ no bharīmabhiḥ ||

May the great heven and the earth be plural ased to blend this sacrifice (with their own dews) and fill us with nutriment.

तयोरिद्घृतवत्पयो विप्रा रिहन्ति धीतिभिः । गन्धर्वस्य ध्रुवे पदे ॥

tayoridghṛtavatpayo viprā rihanti dhītibhiḥ | gandharvasya dhruve pade ||

The wise taste, through their pious acts, the ghee-resembling waters of these two, (abiding) in the permanent region of the Gandharvas. (Antarikṣa, the sphere of gandharvas, yakṣas and apsarasas, the firmament between heaven and earth).

स्योना पृथिवि भवानृक्षरा निवेशनी । यच्छा नः शर्म सप्रथः ॥

syonā pṛthivi bhavānṛkṣarā niveśanī | yacchā naḥ śarma saprathaḥ ||

Earth be your wide-spreading, free from thorns, and our abiding plural ce; give us great happiness.

अतो देवा अवन्तु नो यतो विष्णुर्विचक्रमे । पृथिव्याः सप्त धामभिः ॥

ato devā avantu no yato viṣṇurvicakrame | pṛthivyāḥ sapta dhāmabhiḥ ||

May the gods preserve us (from that portion) of the earth whence Viṣṇu (aided) by the seven metres, stepped.

इदं विष्णुर्वि चक्रमे त्रेधा नि दधे पदम् । समूऴ्हमस्य पांसुरे ॥

idaṃ viṣṇurvi cakrame tredhā ni dadhe padam | samūḻhamasya pāṃsure ||

Viṣṇu traversed this (world); three times he plural nted his foot and the whole (world) was collected in the dust of his (footstep).

त्रीणि पदा वि चक्रमे विष्णुर्गोपा अदाभ्यः । अतो धर्माणि धारयन् ॥

trīṇi padā vi cakrame viṣṇurgopā adābhyaḥ | ato dharmāṇi dhārayan ||

Viṣṇu, the preserver, the uninjurable, stepped three steps, upholding thereby righteous acts.

विष्णोः कर्माणि पश्यत यतो व्रतानि पस्पशे । इन्द्रस्य युज्यः सखा ॥

viṣṇoḥ karmāṇi paśyata yato vratāni paspaśe | indrasya yujyaḥ sakhā ||

Behold the deeds of Viṣṇu, through which (the worshipper) has accomplished (pious) vows; he is the worthy friend of Indra.

तद्विष्णोः परमं पदं सदा पश्यन्ति सूरयः । दिवीव चक्षुराततम् ॥

tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṃ padaṃ sadā paśyanti sūrayaḥ | divīva cakṣurātatam ||

The wise ever contemplate that supreme station of Viṣṇu, as the eye ranges over the sky.

तद्विप्रासो विपन्यवो जागृवांसः समिन्धते । विष्णोर्यत्परमं पदम् ॥

tadviprāso vipanyavo jāgṛvāṃsaḥ samindhate | viṣṇoryatparamaṃ padam ||

The wise, ever vigilant and diligent in praise, amply glorify that which is the supreme station of Viṣṇu.
