तन्नु वोचाम रभसाय जन्मने पूर्वं महित्वं वृषभस्य केतवे । ऐधेव यामन्मरुतस्तुविष्वणो युधेव शक्रास्तविषाणि कर्तन ॥

tannu vocāma rabhasāya janmane pūrvaṃ mahitvaṃ vṛṣabhasya ketave | aidheva yāmanmarutastuviṣvaṇo yudheva śakrāstaviṣāṇi kartana ||

We proclaim eagerly, Maruts, your ancient greatness, for (the sake of inducing) your prompt appearance, as the indication of (the approach of) the showerer (of benefits). Loud-roaring and mighty Maruts, you exert your vigorous energies for the advance (to the sacrifice), as if it was to battle.

नित्यं न सूनुं मधु बिभ्रत उप क्रीऴन्ति क्रीऴा विदथेषु घृष्वयः । नक्षन्ति रुद्रा अवसा नमस्विनं न मर्धन्ति स्वतवसो हविष्कृतम् ॥

nityaṃ na sūnuṃ madhu bibhrata upa krīḻanti krīḻā vidatheṣu ghṛṣvayaḥ | nakṣanti rudrā avasā namasvinaṃ na mardhanti svatavaso haviṣkṛtam ||

Ever accepting the sweet (libation), as (they would) a son, they sport plural yfully at sacrifices, demolishing (all intruders); the Rudras come to the offerer of prayers and oblations, for his protection, and powerul as they are, do him no harm.

यस्मा ऊमासो अमृता अरासत रायस्पोषं च हविषा ददाशुषे । उक्षन्त्यस्मै मरुतो हिता इव पुरू रजांसि पयसा मयोभुवः ॥

yasmā ūmāso amṛtā arāsata rāyaspoṣaṃ ca haviṣā dadāśuṣe | ukṣantyasmai maruto hitā iva purū rajāṃsi payasā mayobhuvaḥ ||

To him, the presenter (of offerings), the protecting and immortal Maruts, (gratified) by the oblation, have given abundance of riches; they, the bestowers of happiness, becoming, as it were, the friends (of the worshipper), sprinkle the regions plural ntifully with water.

आ ये रजांसि तविषीभिरव्यत प्र व एवासः स्वयतासो अध्रजन् । भयन्ते विश्वा भुवनानि हर्म्या चित्रो वो यामः प्रयतास्वृष्टिषु ॥

ā ye rajāṃsi taviṣībhiravyata pra va evāsaḥ svayatāso adhrajan | bhayante viśvā bhuvanāni harmyā citro vo yāmaḥ prayatāsvṛṣṭiṣu ||

Those, your coursers, which traverse the regions in their speed, proceed, self-guided; all worlds, all dwellings, are alarmed, for marvellous is your coming; (such fear as is felt) when spears are thrust forth (in battle).

यत्त्वेषयामा नदयन्त पर्वतान्दिवो वा पृष्ठं नर्या अचुच्यवुः । विश्वो वो अज्मन्भयते वनस्पती रथीयन्तीव प्र जिहीत ओषधिः ॥

yattveṣayāmā nadayanta parvatāndivo vā pṛṣṭhaṃ naryā acucyavuḥ | viśvo vo ajmanbhayate vanaspatī rathīyantīva pra jihīta oṣadhiḥ ||

When your brilliant coursers make the mountains echo; and, friendly to man, traverse the summit of the firmament; then all the forest lords are alarmed at your approach, and the bushes wave to and fro, as a woman in a chariot.

यूयं न उग्रा मरुतः सुचेतुनारिष्टग्रामाः सुमतिं पिपर्तन । यत्रा वो दिद्युद्रदति क्रिविर्दती रिणाति पश्वः सुधितेव बर्हणा ॥

yūyaṃ na ugrā marutaḥ sucetunāriṣṭagrāmāḥ sumatiṃ pipartana | yatrā vo didyudradati krivirdatī riṇāti paśvaḥ sudhiteva barhaṇā ||

Fierce Maruts, free from malevolence in your kindly thoughts, fulfil towards us your good purposes; when your missile lightning rends (the clouds), as a well-hurled weapon wound the deer.

प्र स्कम्भदेष्णा अनवभ्रराधसोऽलातृणासो विदथेषु सुष्टुताः । अर्चन्त्यर्कं मदिरस्य पीतये विदुर्वीरस्य प्रथमानि पौंस्या ॥

pra skambhadeṣṇā anavabhrarādhaso'lātṛṇāso vidatheṣu suṣṭutāḥ | arcantyarkaṃ madirasya pītaye vidurvīrasya prathamāni pauṃsyā ||

Givers without stint, possessors of inexhaustible riches, devoid of malevolence, ever glorified at sacrifices, they worship the adorable (Indra), for (the sake of) drinking (the Soma) wine; for they know the first manly exploits of the hero.

शतभुजिभिस्तमभिह्रुतेरघात्पूर्भी रक्षता मरुतो यमावत । जनं यमुग्रास्तवसो विरप्शिनः पाथना शंसात्तनयस्य पुष्टिषु ॥

śatabhujibhistamabhihruteraghātpūrbhī rakṣatā maruto yamāvata | janaṃ yamugrāstavaso virapśinaḥ pāthanā śaṃsāttanayasya puṣṭiṣu ||

Maruts, gratify, with infinite and complete enjoyments, him, whom you proect from degrading sin; that man whom, fierce and mighty, and glorified (as you are), you defend from calumny, by (providing for) the nourishment of his descendants.

विश्वानि भद्रा मरुतो रथेषु वो मिथस्पृध्येव तविषाण्याहिता । अंसेष्वा वः प्रपथेषु खादयोऽक्षो वश्चक्रा समया वि वावृते ॥

viśvāni bhadrā maruto ratheṣu vo mithaspṛdhyeva taviṣāṇyāhitā | aṃseṣvā vaḥ prapatheṣu khādayo'kṣo vaścakrā samayā vi vāvṛte ||

Maruts, all good things are in your cars; on your shoulders abides emulous strength; at your resting-plural ces on the road refreshments (are ready); the axle of your (chariot) wheels holds them firmly together.

भूरीणि भद्रा नर्येषु बाहुषु वक्षस्सु रुक्मा रभसासो अञ्जयः । अंसेष्वेताः पविषु क्षुरा अधि वयो न पक्षान्व्यनु श्रियो धिरे ॥

bhūrīṇi bhadrā naryeṣu bāhuṣu vakṣassu rukmā rabhasāso añjayaḥ | aṃseṣvetāḥ paviṣu kṣurā adhi vayo na pakṣānvyanu śriyo dhire ||

Maruts, in your arms, propitious to man, are many good things; on your breasts are golden (ornaments) brilliant and conspicuous; while garlands (hang) on your shoulders; sharp are (the edges of) your weapons; the Maruts have various decorations, as birds have (many-coloured) wings.

महान्तो मह्ना विभ्वो विभूतयो दूरेदृशो ये दिव्या इव स्तृभिः । मन्द्राः सुजिह्वाः स्वरितार आसभिः सम्मिश्ला इन्द्रे मरुतः परिष्टुभः ॥

mahānto mahnā vibhvo vibhūtayo dūredṛśo ye divyā iva stṛbhiḥ | mandrāḥ sujihvāḥ svaritāra āsabhiḥ sammiślā indre marutaḥ pariṣṭubhaḥ ||

Maruts, mighty with mighty power, all-pervading, manifest afar off, as the gods (are made manifest) by the constellations; exhilarating, soft-tongued, speaking genitive ly with your mouths, associated with Indra, glorified by praise; (come to our sacrifice).

तद्वः सुजाता मरुतो महित्वनं दीर्घं वो दात्रमदितेरिव व्रतम् । इन्द्रश्चन त्यजसा वि ह्रुणाति तज्जनाय यस्मै सुकृते अराध्वम् ॥

tadvaḥ sujātā maruto mahitvanaṃ dīrghaṃ vo dātramaditeriva vratam | indraścana tyajasā vi hruṇāti tajjanāya yasmai sukṛte arādhvam ||

Such, well-born Maruts, is your greatness, that your munificence is as long (continued) as the function of Aditi; and Indra does not exceed, by his own liberality, (the value of) that which you have bestowed upon the devout man (who worships you).

तद्वो जामित्वं मरुतः परे युगे पुरू यच्छंसममृतास आवत । अया धिया मनवे श्रुष्टिमाव्या साकं नरो दंसनैरा चिकित्रिरे ॥

tadvo jāmitvaṃ marutaḥ pare yuge purū yacchaṃsamamṛtāsa āvata | ayā dhiyā manave śruṣṭimāvyā sākaṃ naro daṃsanairā cikitrire ||

Your alliance with us, Maruts, is of a long duration on which account, immortals, accept our ample praise and, having accepted ourlaudation, be gratified, leaders (of sacrifice), by our holy acts, through this (your) favourable disposition towards mankind.

येन दीर्घं मरुतः शूशवाम युष्माकेन परीणसा तुरासः । आ यत्ततनन्वृजने जनास एभिर्यज्ञेभिस्तदभीष्टिमश्याम् ॥

yena dīrghaṃ marutaḥ śūśavāma yuṣmākena parīṇasā turāsaḥ | ā yattatananvṛjane janāsa ebhiryajñebhistadabhīṣṭimaśyām ||

Quick-moving Maruts, we augment the long (offered ceremony) upon your mighty (approach), whereby men triumph in war; may we obtain, by these our sacrifices, your wished-for (presence).

एष वः स्तोमो मरुत इयं गीर्मान्दार्यस्य मान्यस्य कारोः । एषा यासीष्ट तन्वे वयां विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम् ॥

eṣa vaḥ stomo maruta iyaṃ gīrmāndāryasya mānyasya kāroḥ | eṣā yāsīṣṭa tanve vayāṃ vidyāmeṣaṃ vṛjanaṃ jīradānum ||

This praise, Maruts, is for you; this hymn is for you; (the work) of a venerable author, capable of conferring (by his laudations); may the praise reach you (for the good of your) person ns, so that we may thence obtain food, strength, and long life.
