कया शुभा सवयसः सनीऴाः समान्या मरुतः सं मिमिक्षुः । कया मती कुत एतास एतेऽर्चन्ति शुष्मं वृषणो वसूया ॥

kayā śubhā savayasaḥ sanīḻāḥ samānyā marutaḥ saṃ mimikṣuḥ | kayā matī kuta etāsa ete'rcanti śuṣmaṃ vṛṣaṇo vasūyā ||

(Indra speaks): With what auspicious fortune have the Maruts, who are of one age, one residence, one dignity, watered (the earth) together; with what intention; whence have they come; showerers of rain, they venerate through desire of wealth, the energy (that is genitive rated in the world by rain).

कस्य ब्रह्माणि जुजुषुर्युवानः को अध्वरे मरुत आ ववर्त । श्येनाँ इव ध्रजतो अन्तरिक्षे केन महा मनसा रीरमाम ॥

kasya brahmāṇi jujuṣuryuvānaḥ ko adhvare maruta ā vavarta | śyenā~ iva dhrajato antarikṣe kena mahā manasā rīramāma ||

Of whose oblations do the youthful (Maruts) approve; who attracts them to his (own) sacrifice (from the rites of others); with what powerful praise may we propitiate (them), wandering like kites in the mid-air?

कुतस्त्वमिन्द्र माहिनः सन्नेको यासि सत्पते किं त इत्था । सं पृच्छसे समराणः शुभानैर्वोचेस्तन्नो हरिवो यत्ते अस्मे ॥

kutastvamindra māhinaḥ sanneko yāsi satpate kiṃ ta itthā | saṃ pṛcchase samarāṇaḥ śubhānairvocestanno harivo yatte asme ||

(The Maruts): Indra, lord of the good, whither do you, who are entitled to honour, proceed alone; what means this (absence of attendance); when followed (by us), you require (what is right); lord of fleet horses say to us, with plural asant words, that which you (have to say) to us.

ब्रह्माणि मे मतयः शं सुतासः शुष्म इयर्ति प्रभृतो मे अद्रिः । आ शासते प्रति हर्यन्त्युक्थेमा हरी वहतस्ता नो अच्छ ॥

brahmāṇi me matayaḥ śaṃ sutāsaḥ śuṣma iyarti prabhṛto me adriḥ | ā śāsate prati haryantyukthemā harī vahatastā no accha ||

(Indra): Sacred rites are mine; (holy) praises give me plural asure; libations are for me; my vigorous thunderbolt, hurled (against my foes), goes (to its mark); me, do (pious worshippers) proptiate; hymns are addressed tome; these horses bear us to the presence (ofwhose worshippers, and worship).

अतो वयमन्तमेभिर्युजानाः स्वक्षत्रेभिस्तन्वः शुम्भमानाः । महोभिरेताँ उप युज्महे न्विन्द्र स्वधामनु हि नो बभूथ ॥

ato vayamantamebhiryujānāḥ svakṣatrebhistanvaḥ śumbhamānāḥ | mahobhiretā~ upa yujmahe nvindra svadhāmanu hi no babhūtha ||

(The Maruts): Therefore we also, decorating our person ns, are ready, with our docile and night-standing steeds, (to attend) you, with all our splendour, to those rites; verily, Indra, you appropriate our (sacrificial) food.

क्व स्या वो मरुतः स्वधासीद्यन्मामेकं समधत्ताहिहत्ये । अहं ह्युग्रस्तविषस्तुविष्मान्विश्वस्य शत्रोरनमं वधस्नैः ॥

kva syā vo marutaḥ svadhāsīdyanmāmekaṃ samadhattāhihatye | ahaṃ hyugrastaviṣastuviṣmānviśvasya śatroranamaṃ vadhasnaiḥ ||

(Indra): Where, Maruts, has that (sacrificial) food been assigned to you, which, for the destruction of Ahi was appropriated to me alone; for I indeed am fierce and strong, and mighty, and have bowed down all mine enemies with death-dealing shafts.

भूरि चकर्थ युज्येभिरस्मे समानेभिर्वृषभ पौंस्येभिः । भूरीणि हि कृणवामा शविष्ठेन्द्र क्रत्वा मरुतो यद्वशाम ॥

bhūri cakartha yujyebhirasme samānebhirvṛṣabha pauṃsyebhiḥ | bhūrīṇi hi kṛṇavāmā śaviṣṭhendra kratvā maruto yadvaśāma ||

(The Maruts): Showerer (of benefits), you have done much; but it has been without united equal energies; for we, too, most powerful Indra, have done many things, and by our deeds (we are, as) we desire to be, Maruts.

वधीं वृत्रं मरुत इन्द्रियेण स्वेन भामेन तविषो बभूवान् । अहमेता मनवे विश्वश्चन्द्राः सुगा अपश्चकर वज्रबाहुः ॥

vadhīṃ vṛtraṃ maruta indriyeṇa svena bhāmena taviṣo babhūvān | ahametā manave viśvaścandrāḥ sugā apaścakara vajrabāhuḥ ||

(Indra): By my own prowess, Maruts, I, mighty in my wrath, slew Vṛtra; armed with my thunderbolt, I created all these pellucid genitive ly-flowing waters for (the good of) man.

अनुत्तमा ते मघवन्नकिर्नु न त्वावाँ अस्ति देवता विदानः । न जायमानो नशते न जातो यानि करिष्या कृणुहि प्रवृद्ध ॥

anuttamā te maghavannakirnu na tvāvā~ asti devatā vidānaḥ | na jāyamāno naśate na jāto yāni kariṣyā kṛṇuhi pravṛddha ||

(The Maruts): Verily, Maghvan, nothing (done) by you is unavailing; there is no divinity as wise as you; no one being born, or that has been born, ever surpasses the glorious deeds which you, mighty (Indra), have achieved.

एकस्य चिन्मे विभ्वस्त्वोजो या नु दधृष्वान्कृणवै मनीषा । अहं ह्युग्रो मरुतो विदानो यानि च्यवमिन्द्र इदीश एषाम् ॥

ekasya cinme vibhvastvojo yā nu dadhṛṣvānkṛṇavai manīṣā | ahaṃ hyugro maruto vidāno yāni cyavamindra idīśa eṣām ||

(Indra): May the prowes of me alone be irresistible; may I quickly accomplish whatever I contemplate in my mind; for verily, Maruts, I am fierce and sagacious and to whatever (objects) I direct (my thoughts), of them I am the lord, and rule (over them).

अमन्दन्मा मरुतः स्तोमो अत्र यन्मे नरः श्रुत्यं ब्रह्म चक्र । इन्द्राय वृष्णे सुमखाय मह्यं सख्ये सखायस्तन्वे तनूभिः ॥

amandanmā marutaḥ stomo atra yanme naraḥ śrutyaṃ brahma cakra | indrāya vṛṣṇe sumakhāya mahyaṃ sakhye sakhāyastanve tanūbhiḥ ||

Maruts, on this occasion praise delights me; that prise which is to be heard (by all), which men have offered me. To Indra, the showerer (of benefits), the object of pious sacrifice; to me, (endowed) with many forms (do you) my friends (offer sacrifices) for (the nourishment of my) person n.

एवेदेते प्रति मा रोचमाना अनेद्यः श्रव एषो दधानाः । संचक्ष्या मरुतश्चन्द्रवर्णा अच्छान्त मे छदयाथा च नूनम् ॥

evedete prati mā rocamānā anedyaḥ śrava eṣo dadhānāḥ | saṃcakṣyā marutaścandravarṇā acchānta me chadayāthā ca nūnam ||

Maruts, verily, glorifying me, and enjoying boundless fame and food (through my favour), edo you, of golden colour, and invested with glory, cover me in requital verily, (with renown).

को न्वत्र मरुतो मामहे वः प्र यातन सखीँरच्छा सखायः । मन्मानि चित्रा अपिवातयन्त एषां भूत नवेदा म ऋतानाम् ॥

ko nvatra maruto māmahe vaḥ pra yātana sakhī~racchā sakhāyaḥ | manmāni citrā apivātayanta eṣāṃ bhūta navedā ma ṛtānām ||

(Agastya): What mortal, Maruts, worships you in this world; hasten, friends, to the presence of your friends; wonderful (divinities), be to them the means of acquiring riches, and be not uncognizant of my merits.

आ यद्दुवस्याद्दुवसे न कारुरस्माञ्चक्रे मान्यस्य मेधा । ओ षु वर्त्त मरुतो विप्रमच्छेमा ब्रह्माणि जरिता वो अर्चत् ॥

ā yadduvasyādduvase na kārurasmāñcakre mānyasya medhā | o ṣu vartta maruto vipramacchemā brahmāṇi jaritā vo arcat ||

Since the experienced intellect of a venerable (sage), competent to bestow praise upon (you), who deserve praise, has been exerted for us; do you, Maruts, come to the presence of the devout (worshipper), who, glorifying (you), worships you with these holy rites.

एष वः स्तोमो मरुत इयं गीर्मान्दार्यस्य मान्यस्य कारोः । एषा यासीष्ट तन्वे वयां विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम् ॥

eṣa vaḥ stomo maruta iyaṃ gīrmāndāryasya mānyasya kāroḥ | eṣā yāsīṣṭa tanve vayāṃ vidyāmeṣaṃ vṛjanaṃ jīradānum ||

This praise, Maruts, is for you; this hymn is for you, (the work) of a venerable author, capable of conferring delight (by his laudations). May the praise reach you, for (the good of your) person ns, so that we may (thence) obtain food, strength, and long life.
