[rv-1-12] • 12 श्लोकाः

अग्निं दूतं वृणीमहे होतारं विश्ववेदसम् । अस्य यज्ञस्य सुक्रतुम् ॥

agniṃ dūtaṃ vṛṇīmahe hotāraṃ viśvavedasam | asya yajñasya sukratum ||

We select Agni, the messenger of the gods, their invoker, the possessor of all riches, the perfecter of this rite.

अग्निमग्निं हवीमभिः सदा हवन्त विश्पतिम् । हव्यवाहं पुरुप्रियम् ॥

agnimagniṃ havīmabhiḥ sadā havanta viśpatim | havyavāhaṃ purupriyam ||

(The offerers of oblations) invoke with their invocations, Agni, Agni, the lord of men, the bearer of offerings, the beloved of many.

अग्ने देवाँ इहा वह जज्ञानो वृक्तबर्हिषे । असि होता न ईड्यः ॥

agne devā~ ihā vaha jajñāno vṛktabarhiṣe | asi hotā na īḍyaḥ ||

Agni, genitive rated (by attrition), bring hither the gods to the clipped sacred grass; you are their invoker for us, and are to be adored.

ताँ उशतो वि बोधय यदग्ने यासि दूत्यम् । देवैरा सत्सि बर्हिषि ॥

tā~ uśato vi bodhaya yadagne yāsi dūtyam | devairā satsi barhiṣi ||

As you discharge the duty of messenger, arouse them desirous of the oblation; sit down with them on the sacred grass.

घृताहवन दीदिवः प्रति ष्म रिषतो दह । अग्ने त्वं रक्षस्विनः ॥

ghṛtāhavana dīdivaḥ prati ṣma riṣato daha | agne tvaṃ rakṣasvinaḥ ||

Resplendent Agni, invoked by oblations of clarified butter, consume our adversaries, who are defended by evil spirits.

अग्निनाग्निः समिध्यते कविर्गृहपतिर्युवा । हव्यवाड्जुह्वास्यः ॥

agnināgniḥ samidhyate kavirgṛhapatiryuvā | havyavāḍjuhvāsyaḥ ||

Agni, the ever young and wise, the guardian of the dwelling (of the sacrificer), the bearer of offerings, whose mouth is (the vehicle) of oblations, is kindled by Agni.

कविमग्निमुप स्तुहि सत्यधर्माणमध्वरे । देवममीवचातनम् ॥

kavimagnimupa stuhi satyadharmāṇamadhvare | devamamīvacātanam ||

Praise in the sacrifice, Agni, be the protector of that offerr of oblations who worships you, the messenger of the gods.

यस्त्वामग्ने हविष्पतिर्दूतं देव सपर्यति । तस्य स्म प्राविता भव ॥

yastvāmagne haviṣpatirdūtaṃ deva saparyati | tasya sma prāvitā bhava ||

Resplendent Agni, be the protector of that offerr of oblations who worships you, the messenger of the gods.

यो अग्निं देववीतये हविष्माँ आविवासति । तस्मै पावक मृऴय ॥

yo agniṃ devavītaye haviṣmā~ āvivāsati | tasmai pāvaka mṛḻaya ||

Be propitious, Pāvaka, to him, who, presenting oblations for the gratification of the celestials, approaches Agni.

स नः पावक दीदिवोऽग्ने देवाँ इहा वह । उप यज्ञं हविश्च नः ॥

sa naḥ pāvaka dīdivo'gne devā~ ihā vaha | upa yajñaṃ haviśca naḥ ||

Agni, the bright, the purifier, bring hither the gods to our sacrifice, to our oblations.

स नः स्तवान आ भर गायत्रेण नवीयसा । रयिं वीरवतीमिषम् ॥

sa naḥ stavāna ā bhara gāyatreṇa navīyasā | rayiṃ vīravatīmiṣam ||

Praised with our newest hymn, bestow upon us riches and food, the source of progeny.

अग्ने शुक्रेण शोचिषा विश्वाभिर्देवहूतिभिः । इमं स्तोमं जुषस्व नः ॥

agne śukreṇa śociṣā viśvābhirdevahūtibhiḥ | imaṃ stomaṃ juṣasva naḥ ||

Agni, shining with pure radiance, and charged with all the invocations of the gods, be plural ased by this our praise.
