[rv-1-13] • 12 श्लोकाः

सुसमिद्धो न आ वह देवाँ अग्ने हविष्मते । होतः पावक यक्षि च ॥

susamiddho na ā vaha devā~ agne haviṣmate | hotaḥ pāvaka yakṣi ca ||

Agni, who are Susamiddha, invoker, purifier, bring hither the gods to the offerers of our oblation, and do your sacrifice.

मधुमन्तं तनूनपाद्यज्ञं देवेषु नः कवे । अद्या कृणुहि वीतये ॥

madhumantaṃ tanūnapādyajñaṃ deveṣu naḥ kave | adyā kṛṇuhi vītaye ||

Wise (Agni) who are Tanūnapāt (= devourer of clarified butter), present this day our well-favoured sacrifice to the gods for their food.

नराशंसमिह प्रियमस्मिन्यज्ञ उप ह्वये । मधुजिह्वं हविष्कृतम् ॥

narāśaṃsamiha priyamasminyajña upa hvaye | madhujihvaṃ haviṣkṛtam ||

I invoke the beloved Narāśamśa, the sweet-tongued, the offere of oblations, to this sacrifice.

अग्ने सुखतमे रथे देवाँ ईऴित आ वह । असि होता मनुर्हितः ॥

agne sukhatame rathe devā~ īḻita ā vaha | asi hotā manurhitaḥ ||

Agni, (who are) Īḷita (= worshipped), bring hither the gods in an easy-moving chariot, for you are the invoker instrumental tuted by men.

स्तृणीत बर्हिरानुषग्घृतपृष्ठं मनीषिणः । यत्रामृतस्य चक्षणम् ॥

stṛṇīta barhirānuṣagghṛtapṛṣṭhaṃ manīṣiṇaḥ | yatrāmṛtasya cakṣaṇam ||

Strew, learned priests, the sacred grass, well bound together (in bundles), and sprinkled with clarified butter, the semblance of ambrosia.

वि श्रयन्तामृतावृधो द्वारो देवीरसश्चतः । अद्या नूनं च यष्टवे ॥

vi śrayantāmṛtāvṛdho dvāro devīrasaścataḥ | adyā nūnaṃ ca yaṣṭave ||

Let the bright doors, the augmenters of sacrifice, (hitherto) unentered, be set open, for certainly today is the sacrifice to be made.

नक्तोषासा सुपेशसास्मिन्यज्ञ उप ह्वये । इदं नो बर्हिरासदे ॥

naktoṣāsā supeśasāsminyajña upa hvaye | idaṃ no barhirāsade ||

I invoke the lovely night and dawn to sit upon the sacred grass, at this our sacrifice.

ता सुजिह्वा उप ह्वये होतारा दैव्या कवी । यज्ञं नो यक्षतामिमम् ॥

tā sujihvā upa hvaye hotārā daivyā kavī | yajñaṃ no yakṣatāmimam ||

I call the two eloquent divine and sage invokers (of the gods), that they may celebrate this our sacrifice.

इऴा सरस्वती मही तिस्रो देवीर्मयोभुवः । बर्हिः सीदन्त्वस्रिधः ॥

iḻā sarasvatī mahī tisro devīrmayobhuvaḥ | barhiḥ sīdantvasridhaḥ ||

May the three undecaying goddesses, givers of delight, Iḷā, Sarasvatī, and Mahī (= Bhāratī), sit down upon the sacred grass.

इह त्वष्टारमग्रियं विश्वरूपमुप ह्वये । अस्माकमस्तु केवलः ॥

iha tvaṣṭāramagriyaṃ viśvarūpamupa hvaye | asmākamastu kevalaḥ ||

I invoke the chief and multiform Tvaṣṭṛ (= Viśvakarmā); may he be solely ours.

अव सृजा वनस्पते देव देवेभ्यो हविः । प्र दातुरस्तु चेतनम् ॥

ava sṛjā vanaspate deva devebhyo haviḥ | pra dāturastu cetanam ||

Present, divine Vanaspati (= lord of the woods), our oblation to the gods, and may true knowledge be (the reward) of the giver.

स्वाहा यज्ञं कृणोतनेन्द्राय यज्वनो गृहे । तत्र देवाँ उप ह्वये ॥

svāhā yajñaṃ kṛṇotanendrāya yajvano gṛhe | tatra devā~ upa hvaye ||

Perform the sacrifice conveyed through Svāhā (= an exclamation used in pouring the oblation on the fire) to Indra, in the house of the worshipper; therefore I call the gods hither.
