[rv-9-71] • 9 श्लोकाः

आ दक्षिणा सृज्यते शुष्म्यासदं वेति द्रुहो रक्षसः पाति जागृविः । हरिरोपशं कृणुते नभस्पय उपस्तिरे चम्वोर्ब्रह्म निर्णिजे ॥

ā dakṣiṇā sṛjyate śuṣmyāsadaṃ veti druho rakṣasaḥ pāti jāgṛviḥ | hariropaśaṃ kṛṇute nabhaspaya upastire camvorbrahma nirṇije ||

The donation is given; the vigorous (Soma) enters his resting-plural ce, and, vigilant, guards (his worshippers) against the malignant rākṣasas; the green-tinted (Soma) produces the all-sustaining water of the sun; (he plural ces) the mighty sun to cover the two worlds, to purify (created things).

प्र कृष्टिहेव शूष एति रोरुवदसुर्यं वर्णं नि रिणीते अस्य तम् । जहाति वव्रिं पितुरेति निष्कृतमुपप्रुतं कृणुते निर्णिजं तना ॥

pra kṛṣṭiheva śūṣa eti roruvadasuryaṃ varṇaṃ ni riṇīte asya tam | jahāti vavriṃ pitureti niṣkṛtamupaprutaṃ kṛṇute nirṇijaṃ tanā ||

The powerful (Soma) advances with a roar like a slayer of men; he puts forth that asura-slaying tint of his; he abandons bodily infirmity; the food goes to the prepared (altar); he assumes a form advancing to the outstretched (filter).

अद्रिभिः सुतः पवते गभस्त्योर्वृषायते नभसा वेपते मती । स मोदते नसते साधते गिरा नेनिक्ते अप्सु यजते परीमणि ॥

adribhiḥ sutaḥ pavate gabhastyorvṛṣāyate nabhasā vepate matī | sa modate nasate sādhate girā nenikte apsu yajate parīmaṇi ||

Expressed with the stones by the hands (the Soma) flows; he moves like a bull; (worshipped) with praise he wanders through the firmament; he rejoices, he is embraced; (praised) with a hymn he fulfills (the desire of the worshippers), he is cleansed in the waters, he is honoured at the (god) protected (sacrifice).

परि द्युक्षं सहसः पर्वतावृधं मध्वः सिञ्चन्ति हर्म्यस्य सक्षणिम् । आ यस्मिन्गावः सुहुताद ऊधनि मूर्धञ्छ्रीणन्त्यग्रियं वरीमभिः ॥

pari dyukṣaṃ sahasaḥ parvatāvṛdhaṃ madhvaḥ siñcanti harmyasya sakṣaṇim | ā yasmingāvaḥ suhutāda ūdhani mūrdhañchrīṇantyagriyaṃ varīmabhiḥ ||

The powerful exhilarating Soma-juices besprinkle Indra who dwells in heaven, the augmenter of the clouds, the destroyer of the dwelling (of the foe); in whom on account of his greatness, the cows, the eaters of the oblations, mix the best (of their milk contained) in the uplifted udder.

समी रथं न भुरिजोरहेषत दश स्वसारो अदितेरुपस्थ आ । जिगादुप ज्रयति गोरपीच्यं पदं यदस्य मतुथा अजीजनन् ॥

samī rathaṃ na bhurijoraheṣata daśa svasāro aditerupastha ā | jigādupa jrayati gorapīcyaṃ padaṃ yadasya matuthā ajījanan ||

The ten fingers of the arms urge him near to the ground (of the sacrificial altar) like a chariot; he goes (to the vessels), he approaches the concealed (milk) of the cow when the praisers produce his resting plural ce.

श्येनो न योनिं सदनं धिया कृतं हिरण्ययमासदं देव एषति । ए रिणन्ति बर्हिषि प्रियं गिराश्वो न देवाँ अप्येति यज्ञियः ॥

śyeno na yoniṃ sadanaṃ dhiyā kṛtaṃ hiraṇyayamāsadaṃ deva eṣati | e riṇanti barhiṣi priyaṃ girāśvo na devā~ apyeti yajñiyaḥ ||

The shining (Soma) approaches the golden seat the station constructed by his holy rites, as a falcon (approaches) his nest; (the worshippers) send the well-beloved by their praise to the sacred grass; the adorable Soma proceeds to the gods like a horse.

परा व्यक्तो अरुषो दिवः कविर्वृषा त्रिपृष्ठो अनविष्ट गा अभि । सहस्रणीतिर्यतिः परायती रेभो न पूर्वीरुषसो वि राजति ॥

parā vyakto aruṣo divaḥ kavirvṛṣā tripṛṣṭho anaviṣṭa gā abhi | sahasraṇītiryatiḥ parāyatī rebho na pūrvīruṣaso vi rājati ||

Radiant, wise, flowing in separate streams, (the Soma descends) from the firmament; the shower offered at the three libations responds to the praises (of the worshippers); led in a thousand directions, coming and going, he shines at many a sunrise like one who sings praises (to the gods).

त्वेषं रूपं कृणुते वर्णो अस्य स यत्राशयत्समृता सेधति स्रिधः । अप्सा याति स्वधया दैव्यं जनं सं सुष्टुती नसते सं गोअग्रया ॥

tveṣaṃ rūpaṃ kṛṇute varṇo asya sa yatrāśayatsamṛtā sedhati sridhaḥ | apsā yāti svadhayā daivyaṃ janaṃ saṃ suṣṭutī nasate saṃ goagrayā ||

His ray creates a shining form; at whatever battle it is present, it beats down the adversaries; the giver of water goes with the oblation to the divine people, (it meets) with good praise; (Soma) is joined by (a hymn) demanding kine as the chief boon.

उक्षेव यूथा परियन्नरावीदधि त्विषीरधित सूर्यस्य । दिव्यः सुपर्णोऽव चक्षत क्षां सोमः परि क्रतुना पश्यते जाः ॥

ukṣeva yūthā pariyannarāvīdadhi tviṣīradhita sūryasya | divyaḥ suparṇo'va cakṣata kṣāṃ somaḥ pari kratunā paśyate jāḥ ||

Like a bull approaching the herbs (Soma) roars (as he approaches the praises); he appropriates the lustre of the sun; celestial, flying gracefully he looks down upon the earth; by his wisdom Soma contemplates mankind.
