[rv-8-77] • 11 श्लोकाः

जज्ञानो नु शतक्रतुर्वि पृच्छदिति मातरम् । क उग्राः के ह शृण्विरे ॥

jajñāno nu śatakraturvi pṛcchaditi mātaram | ka ugrāḥ ke ha śṛṇvire ||

As soon as he was born Śatakratu asked his mother, who are the mgihty, who are renowned?

आदीं शवस्यब्रवीदौर्णवाभमहीशुवम् । ते पुत्र सन्तु निष्टुरः ॥

ādīṃ śavasyabravīdaurṇavābhamahīśuvam | te putra santu niṣṭuraḥ ||

His strong mother answered, -- Aurṇavābha and Ahiṣuva, be these, my son the foes who you shallovercome.

समित्तान्वृत्रहाखिदत्खे अराँ इव खेदया । प्रवृद्धो दस्युहाभवत् ॥

samittānvṛtrahākhidatkhe arā~ iva khedayā | pravṛddho dasyuhābhavat ||

The slayer of Vṛtra dragged them along as spokes (are tied fast) with a rope in the nave of a chariotwheel; he swelled in vigour, the slayer of enemies.

एकया प्रतिधापिबत्साकं सरांसि त्रिंशतम् । इन्द्रः सोमस्य काणुका ॥

ekayā pratidhāpibatsākaṃ sarāṃsi triṃśatam | indraḥ somasya kāṇukā ||

At one draught Indra drank at once thirty lakes filled wiḥ Soma.

अभि गन्धर्वमतृणदबुध्नेषु रजस्स्वा । इन्द्रो ब्रह्मभ्य इद्वृधे ॥

abhi gandharvamatṛṇadabudhneṣu rajassvā | indro brahmabhya idvṛdhe ||

In the realms (of the sky) where the foot finds no resting-plural ce, Indra shattered the cloud to bringincrease to the brāhmaṇas.

निराविध्यद्गिरिभ्य आ धारयत्पक्वमोदनम् । इन्द्रो बुन्दं स्वाततम् ॥

nirāvidhyadgiribhya ā dhārayatpakvamodanam | indro bundaṃ svātatam ||

Indra smote (rain) from the clouds with his far-stretched arrow, he secured boiled rice (for men).

शतब्रध्न इषुस्तव सहस्रपर्ण एक इत् । यमिन्द्र चकृषे युजम् ॥

śatabradhna iṣustava sahasraparṇa eka it | yamindra cakṛṣe yujam ||

That single shaft of yours, Indra, which you make your ally, is hundred-pointed, thousand-feathered.

तेन स्तोतृभ्य आ भर नृभ्यो नारिभ्यो अत्तवे । सद्यो जात ऋभुष्ठिर ॥

tena stotṛbhya ā bhara nṛbhyo nāribhyo attave | sadyo jāta ṛbhuṣṭhira ||

Forthwith increased (by our offerings), do you, mighty and firm, by that (weapon) brin (wealth) forsustenance to us your praisers, our children, and our wives.

एता च्यौत्नानि ते कृता वर्षिष्ठानि परीणसा । हृदा वीड्वधारयः ॥

etā cyautnāni te kṛtā varṣiṣṭhāni parīṇasā | hṛdā vīḍvadhārayaḥ ||

These gigantic far-reaching efforts were put forth by you; you did fix them firm in your thought.

विश्वेत्ता विष्णुराभरदुरुक्रमस्त्वेषितः । शतं महिषान्क्षीरपाकमोदनं वराहमिन्द्र एमुषम् ॥

viśvettā viṣṇurābharadurukramastveṣitaḥ | śataṃ mahiṣānkṣīrapākamodanaṃ varāhamindra emuṣam ||

The wide-traversing Sun, despatched by you, brings (to the world) all these (waters which you create);he brings hundreds of cattle and rice boiled in milk; it is Indra who slays the water-stealing boar.

तुविक्षं ते सुकृतं सूमयं धनुः साधुर्बुन्दो हिरण्ययः । उभा ते बाहू रण्या सुसंस्कृत ऋदूपे चिदृदूवृधा ॥

tuvikṣaṃ te sukṛtaṃ sūmayaṃ dhanuḥ sādhurbundo hiraṇyayaḥ | ubhā te bāhū raṇyā susaṃskṛta ṛdūpe cidṛdūvṛdhā ||

Far-darting is your well-made auspicious bow, unfailing is your golden arrow; your two warlike arms areready equipped, destructively overthrowing, destructively piercing.
