[rv-8-66] • 15 श्लोकाः

तरोभिर्वो विदद्वसुमिन्द्रं सबाध ऊतये । बृहद्गायन्तः सुतसोमे अध्वरे हुवे भरं न कारिणम् ॥

tarobhirvo vidadvasumindraṃ sabādha ūtaye | bṛhadgāyantaḥ sutasome adhvare huve bharaṃ na kāriṇam ||

Thronging together, (worship) for your protection Indra full of might and the revealer of wealth; (worshiphim), chanting the Bṛhat-sāman at his sacrifice where the Soma is effused, I invoke him as (men invoke) abeneficent master of a household.

न यं दुध्रा वरन्ते न स्थिरा मुरो मदे सुशिप्रमन्धसः । य आदृत्या शशमानाय सुन्वते दाता जरित्र उक्थ्यम् ॥

na yaṃ dudhrā varante na sthirā muro made suśipramandhasaḥ | ya ādṛtyā śaśamānāya sunvate dātā jaritra ukthyam ||

He, the handsome-jawed, whom, inthe intoxication of the Soma, the fierce (demons) withstand not, north firm gods, nor mortal (men)-- who confers glorious wealth on him who reverently praises him, offers the Somaand sings hymns.

यः शक्रो मृक्षो अश्व्यो यो वा कीजो हिरण्ययः । स ऊर्वस्य रेजयत्यपावृतिमिन्द्रो गव्यस्य वृत्रहा ॥

yaḥ śakro mṛkṣo aśvyo yo vā kījo hiraṇyayaḥ | sa ūrvasya rejayatyapāvṛtimindro gavyasya vṛtrahā ||

He Śakra, who is the purifier (of his worshippers), and well-skilled in horses, who is wonderful andgolden-bodied-- he, Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, shakes the hiding-plural ce of the numerous herd of kine.

निखातं चिद्यः पुरुसम्भृतं वसूदिद्वपति दाशुषे । वज्री सुशिप्रो हर्यश्व इत्करदिन्द्रः क्रत्वा यथा वशत् ॥

nikhātaṃ cidyaḥ purusambhṛtaṃ vasūdidvapati dāśuṣe | vajrī suśipro haryaśva itkaradindraḥ kratvā yathā vaśat ||

He who verily pours forth to the offerer the buried wealth accusative ulated by many, he, Indra, thethunderer, handsome-jawed, borne on bay steeds, does as he plural ases, (when propitiated) with sacrifice.

यद्वावन्थ पुरुष्टुत पुरा चिच्छूर नृणाम् । वयं तत्त इन्द्र सं भरामसि यज्ञमुक्थं तुरं वचः ॥

yadvāvantha puruṣṭuta purā cicchūra nṛṇām | vayaṃ tatta indra saṃ bharāmasi yajñamukthaṃ turaṃ vacaḥ ||

Hero, praised of many, what of old time you did desire from your votaries, that, Indra, we hasten to bringto you-- oblation and recited praise.

सचा सोमेषु पुरुहूत वज्रिवो मदाय द्युक्ष सोमपाः । त्वमिद्धि ब्रह्मकृते काम्यं वसु देष्ठः सुन्वते भुवः ॥

sacā someṣu puruhūta vajrivo madāya dyukṣa somapāḥ | tvamiddhi brahmakṛte kāmyaṃ vasu deṣṭhaḥ sunvate bhuvaḥ ||

Bearer of the thunderbolt, invoked of many, radiant, drinker of the Soma, be present at our libations foryour exhilaration; for you are an abundant giver of desirable wealth to him who utters your praises and effusesthe Soma.

वयमेनमिदा ह्योऽपीपेमेह वज्रिणम् । तस्मा उ अद्य समना सुतं भरा नूनं भूषत श्रुते ॥

vayamenamidā hyo'pīpemeha vajriṇam | tasmā u adya samanā sutaṃ bharā nūnaṃ bhūṣata śrute ||

Today and yesterday we have here refreshed him, the thunderer; bring to him today our libation effusedfor (success in) battle; let him now hasten here on hearing our praise.

वृकश्चिदस्य वारण उरामथिरा वयुनेषु भूषति । सेमं नः स्तोमं जुजुषाण आ गहीन्द्र प्र चित्रया धिया ॥

vṛkaścidasya vāraṇa urāmathirā vayuneṣu bhūṣati | semaṃ naḥ stomaṃ jujuṣāṇa ā gahīndra pra citrayā dhiyā ||

The obstructing robber, the destroyer of travelling enemies, is obedient to him in hiw ways; hasten,Indra, (drawn) by our gorgeous rite, welcoming this our hymn.

कदू न्वस्याकृतमिन्द्रस्यास्ति पौंस्यम् । केनो नु कं श्रोमतेन न शुश्रुवे जनुषः परि वृत्रहा ॥

kadū nvasyākṛtamindrasyāsti pauṃsyam | keno nu kaṃ śromatena na śuśruve januṣaḥ pari vṛtrahā ||

What act of might is there, unperformed by Indra? Who has not heard of his famous (heroism)? He, theslayer of Vṛtra, (is renowned) from his birth.

कदू महीरधृष्टा अस्य तविषीः कदु वृत्रघ्नो अस्तृतम् । इन्द्रो विश्वान्बेकनाटाँ अहर्दृश उत क्रत्वा पणीँरभि ॥

kadū mahīradhṛṣṭā asya taviṣīḥ kadu vṛtraghno astṛtam | indro viśvānbekanāṭā~ ahardṛśa uta kratvā paṇī~rabhi ||

When were his mighty forces ever languid? When was aught undestroyed before the slayer of Vṛtra?Indra by his energy overpowers all the huckstering usurers who see only this world's days.

वयं घा ते अपूर्व्येन्द्र ब्रह्माणि वृत्रहन् । पुरूतमासः पुरुहूत वज्रिवो भृतिं न प्र भरामसि ॥

vayaṃ ghā te apūrvyendra brahmāṇi vṛtrahan | purūtamāsaḥ puruhūta vajrivo bhṛtiṃ na pra bharāmasi ||

Indra, slayer of Vṛra, invoked of many, we, your many worshippers, offer new hymns to you, thunderer,as your wages.

पूर्वीश्चिद्धि त्वे तुविकूर्मिन्नाशसो हवन्त इन्द्रोतयः । तिरश्चिदर्यः सवना वसो गहि शविष्ठ श्रुधि मे हवम् ॥

pūrvīściddhi tve tuvikūrminnāśaso havanta indrotayaḥ | tiraścidaryaḥ savanā vaso gahi śaviṣṭha śrudhi me havam ||

Indra, doer of many great deeds, (other worshippers) invoke the manifold hopes and protections whichabide in you; but rejecting the enemy's oblations, come to us bestower of dwellings; O mightiest, hear my appeal.

वयं घा ते त्वे इद्विन्द्र विप्रा अपि ष्मसि । नहि त्वदन्यः पुरुहूत कश्चन मघवन्नस्ति मर्डिता ॥

vayaṃ ghā te tve idvindra viprā api ṣmasi | nahi tvadanyaḥ puruhūta kaścana maghavannasti marḍitā ||

Indra, we are your, therefore we, your worshippers, depend on you; other than you, Maghavan, invokedof many, there is no giver of happiness.

त्वं नो अस्या अमतेरुत क्षुधोऽभिशस्तेरव स्पृधि । त्वं न ऊती तव चित्रया धिया शिक्षा शचिष्ठ गातुवित् ॥

tvaṃ no asyā amateruta kṣudho'bhiśasterava spṛdhi | tvaṃ na ūtī tava citrayā dhiyā śikṣā śaciṣṭha gātuvit ||

Deliver from us this poverty, hunger and calumny; give us (our desire) by your protection and wondrousworking; O mightiest, you know the right way.

सोम इद्वः सुतो अस्तु कलयो मा बिभीतन । अपेदेष ध्वस्मायति स्वयं घैषो अपायति ॥

soma idvaḥ suto astu kalayo mā bibhītana | apedeṣa dhvasmāyati svayaṃ ghaiṣo apāyati ||

Let your effused Soma be only (for Indra); O sons of Kali, fear not; that malignant (spirit) departs, of hisown accord he departs.
