[rv-8-60] • 20 श्लोकाः

अग्न आ याह्यग्निभिर्होतारं त्वा वृणीमहे । आ त्वामनक्तु प्रयता हविष्मती यजिष्ठं बर्हिरासदे ॥

agna ā yāhyagnibhirhotāraṃ tvā vṛṇīmahe | ā tvāmanaktu prayatā haviṣmatī yajiṣṭhaṃ barhirāsade ||

Agni, come here with the fires, we choose you as our invoking priest; let the presented offering anointyou, the chief sacrificer, to sit down on the sacred grass.

अच्छा हि त्वा सहसः सूनो अङ्गिरः स्रुचश्चरन्त्यध्वरे । ऊर्जो नपातं घृतकेशमीमहेऽग्निं यज्ञेषु पूर्व्यम् ॥

acchā hi tvā sahasaḥ sūno aṅgiraḥ srucaścarantyadhvare | ūrjo napātaṃ ghṛtakeśamīmahe'gniṃ yajñeṣu pūrvyam ||

Aṅgirasa, son of strength, the ladles go to find you in the sacrifice; we praise the ancient Agni in ourofferings, the grandson of food, butter-haired.

अग्ने कविर्वेधा असि होता पावक यक्ष्यः । मन्द्रो यजिष्ठो अध्वरेष्वीड्यो विप्रेभिः शुक्र मन्मभिः ॥

agne kavirvedhā asi hotā pāvaka yakṣyaḥ | mandro yajiṣṭho adhvareṣvīḍyo viprebhiḥ śukra manmabhiḥ ||

Agni, you, wise, are the creator (of consequences); O purifier, you are the involving priest, worthy ofworship; bright one, you are to be praised in our sacrifices by the priests with hymns, yourself the chief ministrantworthy to be rejoiced in.

अद्रोघमा वहोशतो यविष्ठ्य देवाँ अजस्र वीतये । अभि प्रयांसि सुधिता वसो गहि मन्दस्व धीतिभिर्हितः ॥

adroghamā vahośato yaviṣṭhya devā~ ajasra vītaye | abhi prayāṃsi sudhitā vaso gahi mandasva dhītibhirhitaḥ ||

Most youthful, eternal one, bring the longing gods to me guileless, to eat (the oblation); giver ofdwellings, approach the well-plural ced food; rejoice, being set in your plural ce with praises.

त्वमित्सप्रथा अस्यग्ने त्रातॠतस्कविः । त्वां विप्रासः समिधान दीदिव आ विवासन्ति वेधसः ॥

tvamitsaprathā asyagne trātaṝtaskaviḥ | tvāṃ viprāsaḥ samidhāna dīdiva ā vivāsanti vedhasaḥ ||

Deliverer Agni, you, the truthful and the seer, are widely spread; O kindled blazing one, the wisepraisers wait on you.

शोचा शोचिष्ठ दीदिहि विशे मयो रास्व स्तोत्रे महाँ असि । देवानां शर्मन्मम सन्तु सूरयः शत्रूषाहः स्वग्नयः ॥

śocā śociṣṭha dīdihi viśe mayo rāsva stotre mahā~ asi | devānāṃ śarmanmama santu sūrayaḥ śatrūṣāhaḥ svagnayaḥ ||

Most resplendent (Agni), shine forth and illuminate (us); give happiness to your people, to yourworshipper, for you are great; may my priests abide in the bliss of the gods, subduing their enemies, possessingbright fires.

यथा चिद्वृद्धमतसमग्ने संजूर्वसि क्षमि । एवा दह मित्रमहो यो अस्मध्रुग्दुर्मन्मा कश्च वेनति ॥

yathā cidvṛddhamatasamagne saṃjūrvasi kṣami | evā daha mitramaho yo asmadhrugdurmanmā kaśca venati ||

As, Agni, you consume old timber on the earth, so, cherisher of friends, do you burn our injurer,whosoever evil-minded wishes (our ill).

मा नो मर्ताय रिपवे रक्षस्विने माघशंसाय रीरधः । अस्रेधद्भिस्तरणिभिर्यविष्ठ्य शिवेभिः पाहि पायुभिः ॥

mā no martāya ripave rakṣasvine māghaśaṃsāya rīradhaḥ | asredhadbhistaraṇibhiryaviṣṭhya śivebhiḥ pāhi pāyubhiḥ ||

Subject us not to a strong mortal enemy, nor to the malevolent; O most youthful, guard us with yourunharming delivering auspicious protections.

पाहि नो अग्न एकया पाह्युत द्वितीयया । पाहि गीर्भिस्तिसृभिरूर्जां पते पाहि चतसृभिर्वसो ॥

pāhi no agna ekayā pāhyuta dvitīyayā | pāhi gīrbhistisṛbhirūrjāṃ pate pāhi catasṛbhirvaso ||

Agni, protect us by one (rich), or protect us by a second; lord of strength, protect us by three sons;protect us, giver of dwellings, by four.

पाहि विश्वस्माद्रक्षसो अराव्णः प्र स्म वाजेषु नोऽव । त्वामिद्धि नेदिष्ठं देवतातय आपिं नक्षामहे वृधे ॥

pāhi viśvasmādrakṣaso arāvṇaḥ pra sma vājeṣu no'va | tvāmiddhi nediṣṭhaṃ devatātaya āpiṃ nakṣāmahe vṛdhe ||

Protect us from every impious rākṣasa, shield us in battles; we approach you, our nearest neighbour,our kinsman, for sacrifice and for increase.

आ नो अग्ने वयोवृधं रयिं पावक शंस्यम् । रास्वा च न उपमाते पुरुस्पृहं सुनीती स्वयशस्तरम् ॥

ā no agne vayovṛdhaṃ rayiṃ pāvaka śaṃsyam | rāsvā ca na upamāte puruspṛhaṃ sunītī svayaśastaram ||

Purifying Agni, bestow upon us food-augmenting excellent wealth; and (bring) us, O meter-out of good,by auspicious guidance, (a treasure) desired by many and bringing its own fame.

येन वंसाम पृतनासु शर्धतस्तरन्तो अर्य आदिशः । स त्वं नो वर्ध प्रयसा शचीवसो जिन्वा धियो वसुविदः ॥

yena vaṃsāma pṛtanāsu śardhatastaranto arya ādiśaḥ | sa tvaṃ no vardha prayasā śacīvaso jinvā dhiyo vasuvidaḥ ||

By which we may escape and destroy in battles our impetuous weapon- aiming enemies; O you who bywisdom establish our rites, bless us with food, prosper our wealth-obtaining offerings.

शिशानो वृषभो यथाग्निः शृङ्गे दविध्वत् । तिग्मा अस्य हनवो न प्रतिधृषे सुजम्भः सहसो यहुः ॥

śiśāno vṛṣabho yathāgniḥ śṛṅge davidhvat | tigmā asya hanavo na pratidhṛṣe sujambhaḥ sahaso yahuḥ ||

Agni tosses his horns, sharpening them as a bull; his sharp jaws are not to be resisted; he is mightytoothed, this son of strength.

नहि ते अग्ने वृषभ प्रतिधृषे जम्भासो यद्वितिष्ठसे । स त्वं नो होतः सुहुतं हविष्कृधि वंस्वा नो वार्या पुरु ॥

nahi te agne vṛṣabha pratidhṛṣe jambhāso yadvitiṣṭhase | sa tvaṃ no hotaḥ suhutaṃ haviṣkṛdhi vaṃsvā no vāryā puru ||

Since you spread out on all sides, your teeth, bull Agni, are not to be resisted; O offerer, do you makeour oblation rightly presented; give us many precious (gifts).

शेषे वनेषु मात्रोः सं त्वा मर्तास इन्धते । अतन्द्रो हव्या वहसि हविष्कृत आदिद्देवेषु राजसि ॥

śeṣe vaneṣu mātroḥ saṃ tvā martāsa indhate | atandro havyā vahasi haviṣkṛta ādiddeveṣu rājasi ||

You sleep within your mothers in the woods, mortals kindle you; unwearied you bear the offerings of thesacrificer, then you shine among the gods.

सप्त होतारस्तमिदीऴते त्वाग्ने सुत्यजमह्रयम् । भिनत्स्यद्रिं तपसा वि शोचिषा प्राग्ने तिष्ठ जनाँ अति ॥

sapta hotārastamidīḻate tvāgne sutyajamahrayam | bhinatsyadriṃ tapasā vi śociṣā prāgne tiṣṭha janā~ ati ||

The seven priests praise you, Agni, giver of good things and unfailing; you cleave the cloud with yourfierce splendour; go forth, having overcome our enemies.

अग्निमग्निं वो अध्रिगुं हुवेम वृक्तबर्हिषः । अग्निं हितप्रयसः शश्वतीष्वा होतारं चर्षणीनाम् ॥

agnimagniṃ vo adhriguṃ huvema vṛktabarhiṣaḥ | agniṃ hitaprayasaḥ śaśvatīṣvā hotāraṃ carṣaṇīnām ||

Now that we have cut the sacred grass, let us invoke for you Agni, Agni the irresistible; having plural cedthe oblations, let us invoke Agni, abiding in many (plural ces), the offerer of sacrifices for men.

केतेन शर्मन्त्सचते सुषामण्यग्ने तुभ्यं चिकित्वना । इषण्यया नः पुरुरूपमा भर वाजं नेदिष्ठमूतये ॥

ketena śarmantsacate suṣāmaṇyagne tubhyaṃ cikitvanā | iṣaṇyayā naḥ pururūpamā bhara vājaṃ nediṣṭhamūtaye ||

(The sacrificer) worships you by praises, Agni, with the experienced (priests) in the rite celebrated withbeautiful Sāman hymns;bring us of your own accord for our protection food of various kinds which may bealways in our reach.

अग्ने जरितर्विश्पतिस्तेपानो देव रक्षसः । अप्रोषिवान्गृहपतिर्महाँ असि दिवस्पायुर्दुरोणयुः ॥

agne jaritarviśpatistepāno deva rakṣasaḥ | aproṣivāngṛhapatirmahā~ asi divaspāyurduroṇayuḥ ||

Divine Agni, worthy of praise, you are the guardian of men, the consumer of the rākṣasas; you aregreat, you the never-absent guardian of the (worshipper's) house, the protector of heaven, ever present in thedwelling.

मा नो रक्ष आ वेशीदाघृणीवसो मा यातुर्यातुमावताम् । परोगव्यूत्यनिरामप क्षुधमग्ने सेध रक्षस्विनः ॥

mā no rakṣa ā veśīdāghṛṇīvaso mā yāturyātumāvatām | parogavyūtyanirāmapa kṣudhamagne sedha rakṣasvinaḥ ||

O you brilliant wealth, let not the rākṣasa enter us, nor the torment of the evil spirits; Agni, drive awayfurther than a gavyūti from us poverty, hunger and the strong demons.
