[rv-8-102] • 22 श्लोकाः

त्वमग्ने बृहद्वयो दधासि देव दाशुषे । कविर्गृहपतिर्युवा ॥

tvamagne bṛhadvayo dadhāsi deva dāśuṣe | kavirgṛhapatiryuvā ||

Divine Agni, the ever young, the wise, the protector of the household, it is you who give abundant foodto the worshipper.

स न ईऴानया सह देवाँ अग्ने दुवस्युवा । चिकिद्विभानवा वह ॥

sa na īḻānayā saha devā~ agne duvasyuvā | cikidvibhānavā vaha ||

Resplendent one, do you, the all-knower, bring the gods here with this our reverential hymn of praise.

त्वया ह स्विद्युजा वयं चोदिष्ठेन यविष्ठ्य । अभि ष्मो वाजसातये ॥

tvayā ha svidyujā vayaṃ codiṣṭhena yaviṣṭhya | abhi ṣmo vājasātaye ||

O ever youthful one, with you as our ally, the sender of wealth, we overcome (our enemies) fo rtheattainemnt of food.

और्वभृगुवच्छुचिमप्नवानवदा हुवे । अग्निं समुद्रवाससम् ॥

aurvabhṛguvacchucimapnavānavadā huve | agniṃ samudravāsasam ||

Like Aurva Bhṛgu and like Apanvān, I invoke the pure Agni, dwelling in the midst of the sea.

हुवे वातस्वनं कविं पर्जन्यक्रन्द्यं सहः । अग्निं समुद्रवाससम् ॥

huve vātasvanaṃ kaviṃ parjanyakrandyaṃ sahaḥ | agniṃ samudravāsasam ||

I invoke Agni, dwelling in the midst of the sea, the wise one, roaring like the wind, might, with a voicelike Parjanya's.

आ सवं सवितुर्यथा भगस्येव भुजिं हुवे । अग्निं समुद्रवाससम् ॥

ā savaṃ savituryathā bhagasyeva bhujiṃ huve | agniṃ samudravāsasam ||

I invoke Agni dwelling in th emidst of the sea, like the energy of Savitā, like the enjoyments granted byBhaga.

अग्निं वो वृधन्तमध्वराणां पुरूतमम् । अच्छा नप्त्रे सहस्वते ॥

agniṃ vo vṛdhantamadhvarāṇāṃ purūtamam | acchā naptre sahasvate ||

(Draw) near to Agni the strong, the mightiest, him who expands (with his flames), the grandson of theinvincible ones.

अयं यथा न आभुवत्त्वष्टा रूपेव तक्ष्या । अस्य क्रत्वा यशस्वतः ॥

ayaṃ yathā na ābhuvattvaṣṭā rūpeva takṣyā | asya kratvā yaśasvataḥ ||

(Draw near) that he may deal with us as a carpenter (TVaṣṭā) deals with the timber he has to cut;may we become renowned by his skill.

अयं विश्वा अभि श्रियोऽग्निर्देवेषु पत्यते । आ वाजैरुप नो गमत् ॥

ayaṃ viśvā abhi śriyo'gnirdeveṣu patyate | ā vājairupa no gamat ||

Among the gods Agni has to do with all the successes (of men); may he come to us with abundance offood.

विश्वेषामिह स्तुहि होतॄणां यशस्तमम् । अग्निं यज्ञेषु पूर्व्यम् ॥

viśveṣāmiha stuhi hotṝṇāṃ yaśastamam | agniṃ yajñeṣu pūrvyam ||

Praise at our rite Agni, the most glorious of all ministrant priests, the foremost in the sacrifice.

शीरं पावकशोचिषं ज्येष्ठो यो दमेष्वा । दीदाय दीर्घश्रुत्तमः ॥

śīraṃ pāvakaśociṣaṃ jyeṣṭho yo dameṣvā | dīdāya dīrghaśruttamaḥ ||

(Praise him) the dweller in the sacrifice, of purifying radiance, who shines, the chief of the gods andomniscient, in the house (of the sacrificers).

तमर्वन्तं न सानसिं गृणीहि विप्र शुष्मिणम् । मित्रं न यातयज्जनम् ॥

tamarvantaṃ na sānasiṃ gṛṇīhi vipra śuṣmiṇam | mitraṃ na yātayajjanam ||

O priest, glorify him, who is welcome and strong as a horse, and who like a friend conquers all foes.

उप त्वा जामयो गिरो देदिशतीर्हविष्कृतः । वायोरनीके अस्थिरन् ॥

upa tvā jāmayo giro dediśatīrhaviṣkṛtaḥ | vāyoranīke asthiran ||

The sister praises of the worshipper rise to you, proclaiming your glories; they stand kindling you in thepresence of Vāyu.

यस्य त्रिधात्ववृतं बर्हिस्तस्थावसंदिनम् । आपश्चिन्नि दधा पदम् ॥

yasya tridhātvavṛtaṃ barhistasthāvasaṃdinam | āpaścinni dadhā padam ||

The waters find their plural ce in him, for whom the triple-jointed grass is spread unlimited and untied (inthe sacrifice).

पदं देवस्य मीऴ्हुषोऽनाधृष्टाभिरूतिभिः । भद्रा सूर्य इवोपदृक् ॥

padaṃ devasya mīḻhuṣo'nādhṛṣṭābhirūtibhiḥ | bhadrā sūrya ivopadṛk ||

Auspicious is the plural ce of the god who pours forth all desires with his inviolable protections; auspiciousis his appearance like the Sun's.

अग्ने घृतस्य धीतिभिस्तेपानो देव शोचिषा । आ देवान्वक्षि यक्षि च ॥

agne ghṛtasya dhītibhistepāno deva śociṣā | ā devānvakṣi yakṣi ca ||

Divine Agni, blazing with radiance, through our oblations of ghī, bear (our sacrifice) to the gods andoffer it.

तं त्वाजनन्त मातरः कविं देवासो अङ्गिरः । हव्यवाहममर्त्यम् ॥

taṃ tvājananta mātaraḥ kaviṃ devāso aṅgiraḥ | havyavāhamamartyam ||

The gods, as mothers, have borne you Aṅgirasa, the seer, the immortal, the bearer of the oblation.

प्रचेतसं त्वा कवेऽग्ने दूतं वरेण्यम् । हव्यवाहं नि षेदिरे ॥

pracetasaṃ tvā kave'gne dūtaṃ vareṇyam | havyavāhaṃ ni ṣedire ||

The gods seat you in your plural ce, O wise Agni, the seer, the messenger, the most excellent the bearerof the oblation.

नहि मे अस्त्यघ्न्या न स्वधितिर्वनन्वति । अथैतादृग्भरामि ते ॥

nahi me astyaghnyā na svadhitirvananvati | athaitādṛgbharāmi te ||

No cow is mine, and no axe is at hand to cleave wood, but yet I bring both these to you.

यदग्ने कानि कानि चिदा ते दारूणि दध्मसि । ता जुषस्व यविष्ठ्य ॥

yadagne kāni kāni cidā te dārūṇi dadhmasi | tā juṣasva yaviṣṭhya ||

Most youthful (Agni), when we offer any kinds of timber trees to burn, you accept them all.

यदत्त्युपजिह्विका यद्वम्रो अतिसर्पति । सर्वं तदस्तु ते घृतम् ॥

yadattyupajihvikā yadvamro atisarpati | sarvaṃ tadastu te ghṛtam ||

Whatever timber the ant has gnawed, whatever the emmet has infested-- may it all be welcome to youas ghī.

अग्निमिन्धानो मनसा धियं सचेत मर्त्यः । अग्निमीधे विवस्वभिः ॥

agnimindhāno manasā dhiyaṃ saceta martyaḥ | agnimīdhe vivasvabhiḥ ||

Let a man, when he kindles Agni, perform the ceremony with a (devout) mind; he kindles him with thepriests.
