[rv-6-20] • 13 श्लोकाः

द्यौर्न य इन्द्राभि भूमार्यस्तस्थौ रयिः शवसा पृत्सु जनान् । तं नः सहस्रभरमुर्वरासां दद्धि सूनो सहसो वृत्रतुरम् ॥

dyaurna ya indrābhi bhūmāryastasthau rayiḥ śavasā pṛtsu janān | taṃ naḥ sahasrabharamurvarāsāṃ daddhi sūno sahaso vṛtraturam ||

Indra, son of strength, grant us (a son), the possessor of thousands, the owner of cultivated lands, the usbduer of foes, the riches that may overcome men in battles by strength, as the radiant (sun) overspreads the earth by his rays.

दिवो न तुभ्यमन्विन्द्र सत्रासुर्यं देवेभिर्धायि विश्वम् । अहिं यद्वृत्रमपो वव्रिवांसं हन्नृजीषिन्विष्णुना सचानः ॥

divo na tubhyamanvindra satrāsuryaṃ devebhirdhāyi viśvam | ahiṃ yadvṛtramapo vavrivāṃsaṃ hannṛjīṣinviṣṇunā sacānaḥ ||

To you, Indra, as to the sun, all strength has verily been given by the gods; so that, drinker of the stale Soma, associated with Viṣṇu, you mightiest slay the hostile Ahi obstructing the waters.

तूर्वन्नोजीयान्तवसस्तवीयान्कृतब्रह्मेन्द्रो वृद्धमहाः । राजाभवन्मधुनः सोम्यस्य विश्वासां यत्पुरां दर्त्नुमावत् ॥

tūrvannojīyāntavasastavīyānkṛtabrahmendro vṛddhamahāḥ | rājābhavanmadhunaḥ somyasya viśvāsāṃ yatpurāṃ dartnumāvat ||

When Indra, the destroyer, the most mighty, the strongest of the strong, the giver of food, the possessor of vast splendour, received (the thunderbolt), the shatterer of all the cities (of the asuras), he became the lord of the sweet Soma.

शतैरपद्रन्पणय इन्द्रात्र दशोणये कवयेऽर्कसातौ । वधैः शुष्णस्याशुषस्य मायाः पित्वो नारिरेचीत्किं चन प्र ॥

śatairapadranpaṇaya indrātra daśoṇaye kavaye'rkasātau | vadhaiḥ śuṣṇasyāśuṣasya māyāḥ pitvo nārirecītkiṃ cana pra ||

The Paṇis, Indra, fled, with hundres (of asuras), from the sage, your worshipper (and ally) in battle; neither did e, (Indra), suffer the deceptions of the powerful Śuṣṇa to prevail over his weapons, nor did he (leave him) any of his sustenance.

महो द्रुहो अप विश्वायु धायि वज्रस्य यत्पतने पादि शुष्णः । उरु ष सरथं सारथये करिन्द्रः कुत्साय सूर्यस्य सातौ ॥

maho druho apa viśvāyu dhāyi vajrasya yatpatane pādi śuṣṇaḥ | uru ṣa sarathaṃ sārathaye karindraḥ kutsāya sūryasya sātau ||

When Śuṣṇa passed away upon the falling of the thunderbolt, then the universal strength of the great oppressor was annihilated, and Indra enlarged their common car for (the use of) his charioteer Kutsa, for (the sake of) the worship of the sn.

प्र श्येनो न मदिरमंशुमस्मै शिरो दासस्य नमुचेर्मथायन् । प्रावन्नमीं साप्यं ससन्तं पृणग्राया समिषा सं स्वस्ति ॥

pra śyeno na madiramaṃśumasmai śiro dāsasya namucermathāyan | prāvannamīṃ sāpyaṃ sasantaṃ pṛṇagrāyā samiṣā saṃ svasti ||

And the hawk bore to Indra the exhilarating Soma, when, bruising the head of the oppressor Namuci, and protecting the slumbering Nami, the son of Sapya, he provided, for the weeell-being (of the sage), riches and food.

वि पिप्रोरहिमायस्य दृऴ्हाः पुरो वज्रिञ्छवसा न दर्दः । सुदामन्तद्रेक्णो अप्रमृष्यमृजिश्वने दात्रं दाशुषे दाः ॥

vi piprorahimāyasya dṛḻhāḥ puro vajriñchavasā na dardaḥ | sudāmantadrekṇo apramṛṣyamṛjiśvane dātraṃ dāśuṣe dāḥ ||

You have scatered by force, wielder of the thunderbolt, the strong cities of the deadly-deluding Pipru; you have given, bountiful Indra, uninjurable wealh to rijiṣvat, the donor of sacrificial gifts.

स वेतसुं दशमायं दशोणिं तूतुजिमिन्द्रः स्वभिष्टिसुम्नः । आ तुग्रं शश्वदिभं द्योतनाय मातुर्न सीमुप सृजा इयध्यै ॥

sa vetasuṃ daśamāyaṃ daśoṇiṃ tūtujimindraḥ svabhiṣṭisumnaḥ | ā tugraṃ śaśvadibhaṃ dyotanāya māturna sīmupa sṛjā iyadhyai ||

Indra, the granter of wished-for felicity, compelled the many-fraudulent Etaśa and Dasoṇi, Tūtuji, Tugra and Ibha, always to come submissively to (the rājā) Dyotana, as a son (comes before a mother).

स ईं स्पृधो वनते अप्रतीतो बिभ्रद्वज्रं वृत्रहणं गभस्तौ । तिष्ठद्धरी अध्यस्तेव गर्ते वचोयुजा वहत इन्द्रमृष्वम् ॥

sa īṃ spṛdho vanate apratīto bibhradvajraṃ vṛtrahaṇaṃ gabhastau | tiṣṭhaddharī adhyasteva garte vacoyujā vahata indramṛṣvam ||

Bearing in his hand the foe-destroyig thunderbolt, Indra, unresisted, demolishing those his adversaries; he mounts his two-horse (car), as a warrior (ascends) his chariot; harnessed at a word, his steeds, convey the migty Indra.

सनेम तेऽवसा नव्य इन्द्र प्र पूरवः स्तवन्त एना यज्ञैः । सप्त यत्पुरः शर्म शारदीर्दर्द्धन्दासीः पुरुकुत्साय शिक्षन् ॥

sanema te'vasā navya indra pra pūravaḥ stavanta enā yajñaiḥ | sapta yatpuraḥ śarma śāradīrdarddhandāsīḥ purukutsāya śikṣan ||

(Favoured) by your proection, Indra, we solicit new (wealth); by this adoration men glorify you at sacrifices, for that you have shattered with your bolt the seven cities of Śarat, killing the opponents (of sacred rites), killing the opponents (of sacred rites), and giving (their spoils) to Purukutsa.

त्वं वृध इन्द्र पूर्व्यो भूर्वरिवस्यन्नुशने काव्याय । परा नववास्त्वमनुदेयं महे पित्रे ददाथ स्वं नपातम् ॥

tvaṃ vṛdha indra pūrvyo bhūrvarivasyannuśane kāvyāya | parā navavāstvamanudeyaṃ mahe pitre dadātha svaṃ napātam ||

Desirous of opulence, you, Indra, have been an ancient benefactor of Uśanas, the son of Kavi; having slain Navavāstva, you have given back his own grandson, who was (fit) to be restored o the grandfather.

त्वं धुनिरिन्द्र धुनिमतीॠणोरपः सीरा न स्रवन्तीः । प्र यत्समुद्रमति शूर पर्षि पारया तुर्वशं यदुं स्वस्ति ॥

tvaṃ dhunirindra dhunimatīṝṇorapaḥ sīrā na sravantīḥ | pra yatsamudramati śūra parṣi pārayā turvaśaṃ yaduṃ svasti ||

You, Indra, who make (your enemies) tremble, have caused the waters, detained by Dhuni, to flow like rushing rivers; so, hero, when, having crossed the ocean, you have reached the shore, you have brought over in safety Turvaśa and Yadu.

तव ह त्यदिन्द्र विश्वमाजौ सस्तो धुनीचुमुरी या ह सिष्वप् । दीदयदित्तुभ्यं सोमेभिः सुन्वन्दभीतिरिध्मभृतिः पक्थ्यर्कैः ॥

tava ha tyadindra viśvamājau sasto dhunīcumurī yā ha siṣvap | dīdayadittubhyaṃ somebhiḥ sunvandabhītiridhmabhṛtiḥ pakthyarkaiḥ ||

All this, Indra, has been your work in war; you have put to sleep, (in depth), the slumbering Dhunī and Cumurī; and thereupon Dabhīti, pouring the libation, preparing the oblation, and supplying the fuel, has glorified you with Soma offerings.
