त्वमग्ने यज्ञानां होता विश्वेषां हितः । देवेभिर्मानुषे जने ॥

tvamagne yajñānāṃ hotā viśveṣāṃ hitaḥ | devebhirmānuṣe jane ||

You, Agni, have been appointed by the gods, the ministrant fo men, the descendants of manu, at all sacrifices.

स नो मन्द्राभिरध्वरे जिह्वाभिर्यजा महः । आ देवान्वक्षि यक्षि च ॥

sa no mandrābhiradhvare jihvābhiryajā mahaḥ | ā devānvakṣi yakṣi ca ||

Therefore do you at our sacrifice offer oblations to the great deities with exhilarating flames; bring hither the gods; offer them worship.

वेत्था हि वेधो अध्वनः पथश्च देवाञ्जसा । अग्ने यज्ञेषु सुक्रतो ॥

vetthā hi vedho adhvanaḥ pathaśca devāñjasā | agne yajñeṣu sukrato ||

Agni, doere of great deeds, creator, you know (how to travel over) with speed (great) roads and (little) paths at sacrifices.

त्वामीऴे अध द्विता भरतो वाजिभिः शुनम् । ईजे यज्ञेषु यज्ञियम् ॥

tvāmīḻe adha dvitā bharato vājibhiḥ śunam | īje yajñeṣu yajñiyam ||

Bharata, with the presenters of the oblation, has joyfully praised you in your (two-fold capacity), and has worshipped you, the adorable, with sacrifices.

त्वमिमा वार्या पुरु दिवोदासाय सुन्वते । भरद्वाजाय दाशुषे ॥

tvamimā vāryā puru divodāsāya sunvate | bharadvājāya dāśuṣe ||

As you have conferred these many blessings upon Divodāsa when presenting libations, (so now grant them) to the (actual) offerer, Bharadvāja.

त्वं दूतो अमर्त्य आ वहा दैव्यं जनम् । शृण्वन्विप्रस्य सुष्टुतिम् ॥

tvaṃ dūto amartya ā vahā daivyaṃ janam | śṛṇvanviprasya suṣṭutim ||

Hearing the adoration of the sage, do you, who are the immortal messenger, bring hither the celestial people.

त्वामग्ने स्वाध्यो मर्तासो देववीतये । यज्ञेषु देवमीऴते ॥

tvāmagne svādhyo martāso devavītaye | yajñeṣu devamīḻate ||

Pious mortals invoke you, divine Agni, at sacrifices, to convey their (sacrificial) food to the gods.

तव प्र यक्षि संदृशमुत क्रतुं सुदानवः । विश्वे जुषन्त कामिनः ॥

tava pra yakṣi saṃdṛśamuta kratuṃ sudānavaḥ | viśve juṣanta kāminaḥ ||

I glorify your splendour and the acts of you the liberal giver all who, (through your favour) enjoy their desires, glorify you.

त्वं होता मनुर्हितो वह्निरासा विदुष्टरः । अग्ने यक्षि दिवो विशः ॥

tvaṃ hotā manurhito vahnirāsā viduṣṭaraḥ | agne yakṣi divo viśaḥ ||

You have been appointed by manu, the invoker of the gods, the most wise bearer of oblations (to them) by your mouth; worship, Agni, the people of heaven.

अग्न आ याहि वीतये गृणानो हव्यदातये । नि होता सत्सि बर्हिषि ॥

agna ā yāhi vītaye gṛṇāno havyadātaye | ni hotā satsi barhiṣi ||

Come, Agni, to the (sacrificial) fod; being lauded, (come) to convey the oblation (to the gods); sit down as the ministrant priest upon the sacred grass.

तं त्वा समिद्भिरङ्गिरो घृतेन वर्धयामसि । बृहच्छोचा यविष्ठ्य ॥

taṃ tvā samidbhiraṅgiro ghṛtena vardhayāmasi | bṛhacchocā yaviṣṭhya ||

We augment you, Aṅgiras, with fuel and with butter; blaze fiercely, youngest (of the gods).

स नः पृथु श्रवाय्यमच्छा देव विवाससि । बृहदग्ने सुवीर्यम् ॥

sa naḥ pṛthu śravāyyamacchā deva vivāsasi | bṛhadagne suvīryam ||

Divine Agni, bestow upon us (wealth), excellent, great and (comprehending) worthy male descendants.

त्वामग्ने पुष्करादध्यथर्वा निरमन्थत । मूर्ध्नो विश्वस्य वाघतः ॥

tvāmagne puṣkarādadhyatharvā niramanthata | mūrdhno viśvasya vāghataḥ ||

The sage, Atharvan, extracted you from upon the lotus-leaf, the head, the support of the universe.

तमु त्वा दध्यङ्ङृषिः पुत्र ईधे अथर्वणः । वृत्रहणं पुरंदरम् ॥

tamu tvā dadhyaṅṅṛṣiḥ putra īdhe atharvaṇaḥ | vṛtrahaṇaṃ puraṃdaram ||

The ṛṣi, Dadhyañc, the son of Atharvan, kindled the slayer of Vṛtra, the destroyer of the cities of Asuras.

तमु त्वा पाथ्यो वृषा समीधे दस्युहन्तमम् । धनंजयं रणेरणे ॥

tamu tvā pāthyo vṛṣā samīdhe dasyuhantamam | dhanaṃjayaṃ raṇeraṇe ||

(The ṛṣi) Pāthya, the showerer, kindled you the destroyer of the Dasyu, the winner of spoil in battle.

एह्यू षु ब्रवाणि तेऽग्न इत्थेतरा गिरः । एभिर्वर्धास इन्दुभिः ॥

ehyū ṣu bravāṇi te'gna itthetarā giraḥ | ebhirvardhāsa indubhiḥ ||

Come, Agni, that I may address to you other praises in this manner; augment with these libations.

यत्र क्व च ते मनो दक्षं दधस उत्तरम् । तत्रा सदः कृणवसे ॥

yatra kva ca te mano dakṣaṃ dadhasa uttaram | tatrā sadaḥ kṛṇavase ||

Wheresoever, and upon whatsoever your mind is directed, you bestow uncommon vigour, and there you make your abode.

नहि ते पूर्तमक्षिपद्भुवन्नेमानां वसो । अथा दुवो वनवसे ॥

nahi te pūrtamakṣipadbhuvannemānāṃ vaso | athā duvo vanavase ||

Let not your full (blaze) be distressing to the eye, giver of dwellings to your humble votaries, and therefore accept our worship.

आग्निरगामि भारतो वृत्रहा पुरुचेतनः । दिवोदासस्य सत्पतिः ॥

āgniragāmi bhārato vṛtrahā purucetanaḥ | divodāsasya satpatiḥ ||

Agni, the bearer, (of oblations), the destroyer of the enemies of Divopāsa, the cognizant of many, the protector of the good, has been brought hither (by our praises).

स हि विश्वाति पार्थिवा रयिं दाशन्महित्वना । वन्वन्नवातो अस्तृतः ॥

sa hi viśvāti pārthivā rayiṃ dāśanmahitvanā | vanvannavāto astṛtaḥ ||

Surpassing all earthly things, may he bestow upon us riches, destroying his enemies by his greatness, unresisted, unassailed.

स प्रत्नवन्नवीयसाग्ने द्युम्नेन संयता । बृहत्ततन्थ भानुना ॥

sa pratnavannavīyasāgne dyumnena saṃyatā | bṛhattatantha bhānunā ||

You, have overspread, Agni, this vast (firmament) with radiant concentrated lustre, recent like that of old.

प्र वः सखायो अग्नये स्तोमं यज्ञं च धृष्णुया । अर्च गाय च वेधसे ॥

pra vaḥ sakhāyo agnaye stomaṃ yajñaṃ ca dhṛṣṇuyā | arca gāya ca vedhase ||

Sing praise and offer sacrifice, my friends, to the foe-discomfiting, the creator, Agni.

स हि यो मानुषा युगा सीदद्धोता कविक्रतुः । दूतश्च हव्यवाहनः ॥

sa hi yo mānuṣā yugā sīdaddhotā kavikratuḥ | dūtaśca havyavāhanaḥ ||

May that Agni indeed sit down (at our sacrifice), who in every age of man has been the invoker of the gods, doer of wise deeds, the messenger of the gods, the bearer of oblations.

ता राजाना शुचिव्रतादित्यान्मारुतं गणम् । वसो यक्षीह रोदसी ॥

tā rājānā śucivratādityānmārutaṃ gaṇam | vaso yakṣīha rodasī ||

Giver of dwellings, worship on this occasion, the two regal divinities, Mitra and Varuṇa, whose acts are holy, the Ādityas, the company of the Maruts, and heaven.

वस्वी ते अग्ने संदृष्टिरिषयते मर्त्याय । ऊर्जो नपादमृतस्य ॥

vasvī te agne saṃdṛṣṭiriṣayate martyāya | ūrjo napādamṛtasya ||

Son of strength, Agni, the glorious radiance of you who are immortal, bestows food upon (your) mortal worshipper.

क्रत्वा दा अस्तु श्रेष्ठोऽद्य त्वा वन्वन्त्सुरेक्णाः । मर्त आनाश सुवृक्तिम् ॥

kratvā dā astu śreṣṭho'dya tvā vanvantsurekṇāḥ | marta ānāśa suvṛktim ||

May the donor (of the oblation), propitiating you by his acts today, be exalted, and (rendered) very opulent; may (such) mortal be diligent in (your) praise.

ते ते अग्ने त्वोता इषयन्तो विश्वमायुः । तरन्तो अर्यो अरातीर्वन्वन्तो अर्यो अरातीः ॥

te te agne tvotā iṣayanto viśvamāyuḥ | taranto aryo arātīrvanvanto aryo arātīḥ ||

Those, Agni, who are protected by you, wishing for the whole (term of) life (obtain it), overcoming hostile assailants, destroying hostile assailants.

अग्निस्तिग्मेन शोचिषा यासद्विश्वं न्यत्रिणम् । अग्निर्नो वनते रयिम् ॥

agnistigmena śociṣā yāsadviśvaṃ nyatriṇam | agnirno vanate rayim ||

May Agni, with his sharp flame, demolish the devourer (of the oblation); may Agni grant us riches.

सुवीरं रयिमा भर जातवेदो विचर्षणे । जहि रक्षांसि सुक्रतो ॥

suvīraṃ rayimā bhara jātavedo vicarṣaṇe | jahi rakṣāṃsi sukrato ||

Jātavedas, all-beholdeer, bring us wealth with good posterity; doer of good deeds, destroy the rākṣasas.

त्वं नः पाह्यंहसो जातवेदो अघायतः । रक्षा णो ब्रह्मणस्कवे ॥

tvaṃ naḥ pāhyaṃhaso jātavedo aghāyataḥ | rakṣā ṇo brahmaṇaskave ||

Preserve us, Jātavedas, from sin; enunciator of prayer, protect us from the malevolent.

यो नो अग्ने दुरेव आ मर्तो वधाय दाशति । तस्मान्नः पाह्यंहसः ॥

yo no agne dureva ā marto vadhāya dāśati | tasmānnaḥ pāhyaṃhasaḥ ||

The malevolent mortal who threatens us with murderous weapon; defend us from him, and also from sin.

त्वं तं देव जिह्वया परि बाधस्व दुष्कृतम् । मर्तो यो नो जिघांसति ॥

tvaṃ taṃ deva jihvayā pari bādhasva duṣkṛtam | marto yo no jighāṃsati ||

Scatter, divine Agni, by your flame, that evil-doer, the man who seeks to kill us.

भरद्वाजाय सप्रथः शर्म यच्छ सहन्त्य । अग्ने वरेण्यं वसु ॥

bharadvājāya saprathaḥ śarma yaccha sahantya | agne vareṇyaṃ vasu ||

Subduer of foes, grant to Bharadvāja infinite happiness and desirable wealth.

अग्निर्वृत्राणि जङ्घनद्द्रविणस्युर्विपन्यया । समिद्धः शुक्र आहुतः ॥

agnirvṛtrāṇi jaṅghanaddraviṇasyurvipanyayā | samiddhaḥ śukra āhutaḥ ||

May Agni, propitiated by praise, desirous of (sacrificial) affluence, kindled, bright, and fed with burnt-offerings, destroy all adversaries.

गर्भे मातुः पितुष्पिता विदिद्युतानो अक्षरे । सीदन्नृतस्य योनिमा ॥

garbhe mātuḥ pituṣpitā vididyutāno akṣare | sīdannṛtasya yonimā ||

Radiant in the embryo of the maternal (earth), on the imperishable (altar); the cherisher of the paternal (heaven), sitting on the seat of sacrifice.

ब्रह्म प्रजावदा भर जातवेदो विचर्षणे । अग्ने यद्दीदयद्दिवि ॥

brahma prajāvadā bhara jātavedo vicarṣaṇe | agne yaddīdayaddivi ||

Bring to us, Jātavedas, all-beholder, food with progeny; such (food) as is brilliant in heaven.

उप त्वा रण्वसंदृशं प्रयस्वन्तः सहस्कृत । अग्ने ससृज्महे गिरः ॥

upa tvā raṇvasaṃdṛśaṃ prayasvantaḥ sahaskṛta | agne sasṛjmahe giraḥ ||

Strength-begotten Agni, we, offering (sacrificial) food, address praises to you who are of plural asing aspect.

उप च्छायामिव घृणेरगन्म शर्म ते वयम् । अग्ने हिरण्यसंदृशः ॥

upa cchāyāmiva ghṛṇeraganma śarma te vayam | agne hiraṇyasaṃdṛśaḥ ||

We have recourse, Agni, to the shelter of you, the lustrous, the golden-feathered, as to the shade (of a tree).

य उग्र इव शर्यहा तिग्मशृङ्गो न वंसगः । अग्ने पुरो रुरोजिथ ॥

ya ugra iva śaryahā tigmaśṛṅgo na vaṃsagaḥ | agne puro rurojitha ||

You, Agni, who are like a fierce archer, or like a sharp-horned bull, have destroyed the cities (of the asuras).

आ यं हस्ते न खादिनं शिशुं जातं न बिभ्रति । विशामग्निं स्वध्वरम् ॥

ā yaṃ haste na khādinaṃ śiśuṃ jātaṃ na bibhrati | viśāmagniṃ svadhvaram ||

(Worship) that Agni whom (the priests) bear in their hands like a new-born babe; the devourer (of the oblation), the (conveyer of the) holy sacrifices of men.

प्र देवं देववीतये भरता वसुवित्तमम् । आ स्वे योनौ नि षीदतु ॥

pra devaṃ devavītaye bharatā vasuvittamam | ā sve yonau ni ṣīdatu ||

Conduct the divine (Agni), the bestower of infinite wealth, to (receive charge of) the food of the gods; let him sit down on his appropriate seat.

आ जातं जातवेदसि प्रियं शिशीतातिथिम् । स्योन आ गृहपतिम् ॥

ā jātaṃ jātavedasi priyaṃ śiśītātithim | syona ā gṛhapatim ||

(Welcome him) as soon as born, like a beloved guest, and plural ce the lord of the mansion upon the sacred (altar) whence wisdom is derived.

अग्ने युक्ष्वा हि ये तवाश्वासो देव साधवः । अरं वहन्ति मन्यवे ॥

agne yukṣvā hi ye tavāśvāso deva sādhavaḥ | araṃ vahanti manyave ||

Harness, divine Agni, your well-trained horses, who bear you quickly to the sacrifice.

अच्छा नो याह्या वहाभि प्रयांसि वीतये । आ देवान्त्सोमपीतये ॥

acchā no yāhyā vahābhi prayāṃsi vītaye | ā devāntsomapītaye ||

Come, Agni, to our presence, bring hither the gods to partake of the (sacrificial) viands, to drink the Soma.

उदग्ने भारत द्युमदजस्रेण दविद्युतत् । शोचा वि भाह्यजर ॥

udagne bhārata dyumadajasreṇa davidyutat | śocā vi bhāhyajara ||

Blaze up, Agni, bearer of oblations; shine, undecaying Agni, radiant with undecaying lustre.

वीती यो देवं मर्तो दुवस्येदग्निमीऴीताध्वरे हविष्मान् । होतारं सत्ययजं रोदस्योरुत्तानहस्तो नमसा विवासेत् ॥

vītī yo devaṃ marto duvasyedagnimīḻītādhvare haviṣmān | hotāraṃ satyayajaṃ rodasyoruttānahasto namasā vivāset ||

Whatever mortal, offering oblations, worships a deity with (sacrificial) food, let him at the ceremony also worship Agni, the invoker of heaven and earth, the sacrificer with truth; let him adore (Agni) with uplifted hands.

आ ते अग्न ऋचा हविर्हृदा तष्टं भरामसि । ते ते भवन्तूक्षण ऋषभासो वशा उत ॥

ā te agna ṛcā havirhṛdā taṣṭaṃ bharāmasi | te te bhavantūkṣaṇa ṛṣabhāso vaśā uta ||

We offer to you, Agni, the oblation sanctified by the heart, and (identified) with the sacred verse may the vigorous bulls and the cows be (as such an oblation) to you.

अग्निं देवासो अग्रियमिन्धते वृत्रहन्तमम् । येना वसून्याभृता तृऴ्हा रक्षांसि वाजिना ॥

agniṃ devāso agriyamindhate vṛtrahantamam | yenā vasūnyābhṛtā tṛḻhā rakṣāṃsi vājinā ||

The gods kindle Agni as the chief (of them); as the especial desroyer of Vṛtra; by whom the treasures (of the asuras) are carried off; by whom the rākṣasas are destroyed.
