[rv-5-83] • 10 श्लोकाः

अच्छा वद तवसं गीर्भिराभिः स्तुहि पर्जन्यं नमसा विवास । कनिक्रदद्वृषभो जीरदानू रेतो दधात्योषधीषु गर्भम् ॥

acchā vada tavasaṃ gīrbhirābhiḥ stuhi parjanyaṃ namasā vivāsa | kanikradadvṛṣabho jīradānū reto dadhātyoṣadhīṣu garbham ||

I address the mighty Parjanya who is present; praise him with these hymns; worship him with reverence, him who is the thunderer, the showerer, the bountiful, who impregnates the plural nts with rain.

वि वृक्षान्हन्त्युत हन्ति रक्षसो विश्वं बिभाय भुवनं महावधात् । उतानागा ईषते वृष्ण्यावतो यत्पर्जन्यः स्तनयन्हन्ति दुष्कृतः ॥

vi vṛkṣānhantyuta hanti rakṣaso viśvaṃ bibhāya bhuvanaṃ mahāvadhāt | utānāgā īṣate vṛṣṇyāvato yatparjanyaḥ stanayanhanti duṣkṛtaḥ ||

He strikes down the trees, he destroys the rākṣasas, he terrifies the whole world by his mighty weapon; even the innocent man flies from the sender of rain, when Parjanya, thundering, slays the wicked.

रथीव कशयाश्वाँ अभिक्षिपन्नाविर्दूतान्कृणुते वर्ष्याँ अह । दूरात्सिंहस्य स्तनथा उदीरते यत्पर्जन्यः कृणुते वर्ष्यं नभः ॥

rathīva kaśayāśvā~ abhikṣipannāvirdūtānkṛṇute varṣyā~ aha | dūrātsiṃhasya stanathā udīrate yatparjanyaḥ kṛṇute varṣyaṃ nabhaḥ ||

As a charioteer, urging his horses with his whip, brings into view the messenger (of war), so Parjanya, (driving the clouds before him), makes manifest the messengers of the rain; the roaring of the lion-(like cloud) proclaims from afar that Parjanya overspreads the sky with rainy clouds.

प्र वाता वान्ति पतयन्ति विद्युत उदोषधीर्जिहते पिन्वते स्वः । इरा विश्वस्मै भुवनाय जायते यत्पर्जन्यः पृथिवीं रेतसावति ॥

pra vātā vānti patayanti vidyuta udoṣadhīrjihate pinvate svaḥ | irā viśvasmai bhuvanāya jāyate yatparjanyaḥ pṛthivīṃ retasāvati ||

The winds blow strong, the lightnings flash, the plural nts spring up, the firmament dissolves; earth becomes (fit) for all creatures when Parjanya fertilizes the soil with showers.

यस्य व्रते पृथिवी नन्नमीति यस्य व्रते शफवज्जर्भुरीति । यस्य व्रत ओषधीर्विश्वरूपाः स नः पर्जन्य महि शर्म यच्छ ॥

yasya vrate pṛthivī nannamīti yasya vrate śaphavajjarbhurīti | yasya vrata oṣadhīrviśvarūpāḥ sa naḥ parjanya mahi śarma yaccha ||

Do you, Parjanya, through whose function the earth is bowed down; through whose function hoofed cattle thrive; through whose function plural nts assume all kinds of forms, grant us great felicity.

दिवो नो वृष्टिं मरुतो ररीध्वं प्र पिन्वत वृष्णो अश्वस्य धाराः । अर्वाङेतेन स्तनयित्नुनेह्यपो निषिञ्चन्नसुरः पिता नः ॥

divo no vṛṣṭiṃ maruto rarīdhvaṃ pra pinvata vṛṣṇo aśvasya dhārāḥ | arvāṅetena stanayitnunehyapo niṣiñcannasuraḥ pitā naḥ ||

Send down for us, Maruts, the rain from heaven; drops of the rainy charger descend; come down Parjanya, sprinkling water by this thundering (cloud); you who are the sender of rain, our protector.

अभि क्रन्द स्तनय गर्भमा धा उदन्वता परि दीया रथेन । दृतिं सु कर्ष विषितं न्यञ्चं समा भवन्तूद्वतो निपादाः ॥

abhi kranda stanaya garbhamā dhā udanvatā pari dīyā rathena | dṛtiṃ su karṣa viṣitaṃ nyañcaṃ samā bhavantūdvato nipādāḥ ||

Cry aloud over (the earth); thunder; impregnate the plural nts; traverse (the sky) with your water-laden chariot, draw open the tight-fastened, downward-turned water bag, and may the high and low plural ces be made level.

महान्तं कोशमुदचा नि षिञ्च स्यन्दन्तां कुल्या विषिताः पुरस्तात् । घृतेन द्यावापृथिवी व्युन्धि सुप्रपाणं भवत्वघ्न्याभ्यः ॥

mahāntaṃ kośamudacā ni ṣiñca syandantāṃ kulyā viṣitāḥ purastāt | ghṛtena dyāvāpṛthivī vyundhi suprapāṇaṃ bhavatvaghnyābhyaḥ ||

Raise on high the mighty sheath (of rain), pour down (its contents); let the rivers flow unimpeded to the east; saturate with water both heaven and earth, and let there be abundant beverage for the kine.

यत्पर्जन्य कनिक्रदत्स्तनयन्हंसि दुष्कृतः । प्रतीदं विश्वं मोदते यत्किं च पृथिव्यामधि ॥

yatparjanya kanikradatstanayanhaṃsi duṣkṛtaḥ | pratīdaṃ viśvaṃ modate yatkiṃ ca pṛthivyāmadhi ||

When, Parjanya, sounding loud and thundering, you destroy the wicked (clouds), this whole (world) rejoices, and all that is upon the earth.

अवर्षीर्वर्षमुदु षू गृभायाकर्धन्वान्यत्येतवा उ । अजीजन ओषधीर्भोजनाय कमुत प्रजाभ्योऽविदो मनीषाम् ॥

avarṣīrvarṣamudu ṣū gṛbhāyākardhanvānyatyetavā u | ajījana oṣadhīrbhojanāya kamuta prajābhyo'vido manīṣām ||

You have rained; now check well the rain; you have made the deserts capable of being crossed; you have given birth to plural ns for (man's) enjoyment; verily you have obtained laudation from the people.
