[rv-5-53] • 16 श्लोकाः

को वेद जानमेषां को वा पुरा सुम्नेष्वास मरुताम् । यद्युयुज्रे किलास्यः ॥

ko veda jānameṣāṃ ko vā purā sumneṣvāsa marutām | yadyuyujre kilāsyaḥ ||

Who knows the birth of these (Maruts)? who has formerly been (participant) of the enjoyments of them (by whom) the spotted deer are harnessed (to their chariots)?

ऐतान्रथेषु तस्थुषः कः शुश्राव कथा ययुः । कस्मै सस्रुः सुदासे अन्वापय इऴाभिर्वृष्टयः सह ॥

aitānratheṣu tasthuṣaḥ kaḥ śuśrāva kathā yayuḥ | kasmai sasruḥ sudāse anvāpaya iḻābhirvṛṣṭayaḥ saha ||

Who has head them, when standing in their cars, (declare) whither they go? Upon what liberal worshipper do their kindred rains descend together with manifold food?

ते म आहुर्य आययुरुप द्युभिर्विभिर्मदे । नरो मर्या अरेपस इमान्पश्यन्निति ष्टुहि ॥

te ma āhurya āyayurupa dyubhirvibhirmade | naro maryā arepasa imānpaśyanniti ṣṭuhi ||

To me have they spoken; they have come to me with radiant steeds to (drink) the exhilarating beverage; to them (they have said), when, beholding them, who are the formless leaders (of rites), and friends of man, repeat our prais.

ये अञ्जिषु ये वाशीषु स्वभानवः स्रक्षु रुक्मेषु खादिषु । श्राया रथेषु धन्वसु ॥

ye añjiṣu ye vāśīṣu svabhānavaḥ srakṣu rukmeṣu khādiṣu | śrāyā ratheṣu dhanvasu ||

(The praise of them) who are all self-irradiating splendid in ornaments, in arms, in garlands, in breast-plural tes, in bracelets, in chariots, in bows.

युष्माकं स्मा रथाँ अनु मुदे दधे मरुतो जीरदानवः । वृष्टी द्यावो यतीरिव ॥

yuṣmākaṃ smā rathā~ anu mude dadhe maruto jīradānavaḥ | vṛṣṭī dyāvo yatīriva ||

I contemplate your chariots, munificent Maruts, with delight, like wandering lights in the rains.

आ यं नरः सुदानवो ददाशुषे दिवः कोशमचुच्यवुः । वि पर्जन्यं सृजन्ति रोदसी अनु धन्वना यन्ति वृष्टयः ॥

ā yaṃ naraḥ sudānavo dadāśuṣe divaḥ kośamacucyavuḥ | vi parjanyaṃ sṛjanti rodasī anu dhanvanā yanti vṛṣṭayaḥ ||

Leaders (of the rain), munificent givers, they cause that which is the treasury (of water) to fall from the sky for (the benefit of) the donor (of the offering); they let loose the rain cloud, and the shedders of rain spread (everywhere) with (abundant) water.

ततृदानाः सिन्धवः क्षोदसा रजः प्र सस्रुर्धेनवो यथा । स्यन्ना अश्वा इवाध्वनो विमोचने वि यद्वर्तन्त एन्यः ॥

tatṛdānāḥ sindhavaḥ kṣodasā rajaḥ pra sasrurdhenavo yathā | syannā aśvā ivādhvano vimocane vi yadvartanta enyaḥ ||

The gliding (torrents), issuing (from the clouds), overspread the firmament with water, as cows (yield milk), and like rapid horses let loose upon the road, the rivers rush in various directions.

आ यात मरुतो दिव आन्तरिक्षादमादुत । माव स्थात परावतः ॥

ā yāta maruto diva āntarikṣādamāduta | māva sthāta parāvataḥ ||

Come, Maruts, from heaven, from the firmament, or from this (earth); tarry not far off.

मा वो रसानितभा कुभा क्रुमुर्मा वः सिन्धुर्नि रीरमत् । मा वः परि ष्ठात्सरयुः पुरीषिण्यस्मे इत्सुम्नमस्तु वः ॥

mā vo rasānitabhā kubhā krumurmā vaḥ sindhurni rīramat | mā vaḥ pari ṣṭhātsarayuḥ purīṣiṇyasme itsumnamastu vaḥ ||

Let not the Rasa, the Anitabhā, the Kubhā, or the wide-roving ocean delay you; let not the watery Sarayu oppose you; may the happiness of your (approach) be ours.

तं वः शर्धं रथानां त्वेषं गणं मारुतं नव्यसीनाम् । अनु प्र यन्ति वृष्टयः ॥

taṃ vaḥ śardhaṃ rathānāṃ tveṣaṃ gaṇaṃ mārutaṃ navyasīnām | anu pra yanti vṛṣṭayaḥ ||

I praise that brilliant company of the Maruts, who have your strength of recent chariots, you whom the rains attend.

शर्धंशर्धं व एषां व्रातंव्रातं गणंगणं सुशस्तिभिः । अनु क्रामेम धीतिभिः ॥

śardhaṃśardhaṃ va eṣāṃ vrātaṃvrātaṃ gaṇaṃgaṇaṃ suśastibhiḥ | anu krāmema dhītibhiḥ ||

Let us wait with sacred praises and holy rites upon your several strength, and separate troop, and individual company.

कस्मा अद्य सुजाताय रातहव्याय प्र ययुः । एना यामेन मरुतः ॥

kasmā adya sujātāya rātahavyāya pra yayuḥ | enā yāmena marutaḥ ||

To what well-born and oblation-giving (worshipper) will the Maruts today in tthis their car?

येन तोकाय तनयाय धान्यं बीजं वहध्वे अक्षितम् । अस्मभ्यं तद्धत्तन यद्व ईमहे राधो विश्वायु सौभगम् ॥

yena tokāya tanayāya dhānyaṃ bījaṃ vahadhve akṣitam | asmabhyaṃ taddhattana yadva īmahe rādho viśvāyu saubhagam ||

With the same (goodwill) that you bestow imperishable grain-seed upon a son or grandson, bestow it upon us, for we ask of you life-sustaining and auspicious wealth.

अतीयाम निदस्तिरः स्वस्तिभिर्हित्वावद्यमरातीः । वृष्ट्वी शं योराप उस्रि भेषजं स्याम मरुतः सह ॥

atīyāma nidastiraḥ svastibhirhitvāvadyamarātīḥ | vṛṣṭvī śaṃ yorāpa usri bheṣajaṃ syāma marutaḥ saha ||

May we overcomeour secret and reviling adversaries, having departed from iniquity by good deeds; may we possess, Maruts, through the rain (sent by you), unmixed happiness, water, cattle and herbs.

सुदेवः समहासति सुवीरो नरो मरुतः स मर्त्यः । यं त्रायध्वे स्याम ते ॥

sudevaḥ samahāsati suvīro naro marutaḥ sa martyaḥ | yaṃ trāyadhve syāma te ||

Renowned (host of) Maruts, leaders (of rites), that mortal is favoured by the gods, and blessed with progeny, whom you protet; may we be such as he is.

स्तुहि भोजान्त्स्तुवतो अस्य यामनि रणन्गावो न यवसे । यतः पूर्वाँ इव सखीँरनु ह्वय गिरा गृणीहि कामिनः ॥

stuhi bhojāntstuvato asya yāmani raṇangāvo na yavase | yataḥ pūrvā~ iva sakhī~ranu hvaya girā gṛṇīhi kāminaḥ ||

Praise the givers of enjoyment, (the Maruts), at the sacrifice of this worshiper, (for they) delight in (pious praise) like cattle in fodder; wherefore call upon them as if upon friends; praise them, desirous of praise, with a sacred hymn.
