[rv-5-3] • 12 श्लोकाः

त्वमग्ने वरुणो जायसे यत्त्वं मित्रो भवसि यत्समिद्धः । त्वे विश्वे सहसस्पुत्र देवास्त्वमिन्द्रो दाशुषे मर्त्याय ॥

tvamagne varuṇo jāyase yattvaṃ mitro bhavasi yatsamiddhaḥ | tve viśve sahasasputra devāstvamindro dāśuṣe martyāya ||

You, Agni, are born Varuṇa, you become Mitra when kindled; in you, son of strength, are all the gods; you are Indra, son of strength, to the mortal who presents (oblations).

त्वमर्यमा भवसि यत्कनीनां नाम स्वधावन्गुह्यं बिभर्षि । अञ्जन्ति मित्रं सुधितं न गोभिर्यद्दम्पती समनसा कृणोषि ॥

tvamaryamā bhavasi yatkanīnāṃ nāma svadhāvanguhyaṃ bibharṣi | añjanti mitraṃ sudhitaṃ na gobhiryaddampatī samanasā kṛṇoṣi ||

You are Aryaman in relation to maidens; you bear, enjoy of sacrificial food, a mysterious name; they anoint you, like a welcome friend, with milk and butter, when you make husband and wife of one mind.

तव श्रिये मरुतो मर्जयन्त रुद्र यत्ते जनिम चारु चित्रम् । पदं यद्विष्णोरुपमं निधायि तेन पासि गुह्यं नाम गोनाम् ॥

tava śriye maruto marjayanta rudra yatte janima cāru citram | padaṃ yadviṣṇorupamaṃ nidhāyi tena pāsi guhyaṃ nāma gonām ||

For your glory the Maruts sweep (the firmament), when your birth, Rudra, is beautiful and wonderful; the middle step of Viṣṇu has been plural ced, so you cherish the mysterious name of the waters.

तव श्रिया सुदृशो देव देवाः पुरू दधाना अमृतं सपन्त । होतारमग्निं मनुषो नि षेदुर्दशस्यन्त उशिजः शंसमायोः ॥

tava śriyā sudṛśo deva devāḥ purū dadhānā amṛtaṃ sapanta | hotāramagniṃ manuṣo ni ṣedurdaśasyanta uśijaḥ śaṃsamāyoḥ ||

Divine (Agni), gods, (made) comely by your glory, and bearing (the) great (affection), sip the ambrosia; men adore Agni, the conveyer of theburnt-offering, presenting oblations on behalfof the instrumental tutor of the rite, desirous of (its) reward.

न त्वद्धोता पूर्वो अग्ने यजीयान्न काव्यैः परो अस्ति स्वधावः । विशश्च यस्या अतिथिर्भवासि स यज्ञेन वनवद्देव मर्तान् ॥

na tvaddhotā pūrvo agne yajīyānna kāvyaiḥ paro asti svadhāvaḥ | viśaśca yasyā atithirbhavāsi sa yajñena vanavaddeva martān ||

There is no more venerable offerer of oblation, Agni, than you, nor (one) prior to you; neither, giver of food, is any one subsequent (tobe more glorified by hymns); the man of whom you are the guest destroys hostile men by sacrifice.

वयमग्ने वनुयाम त्वोता वसूयवो हविषा बुध्यमानाः । वयं समर्ये विदथेष्वह्नां वयं राया सहसस्पुत्र मर्तान् ॥

vayamagne vanuyāma tvotā vasūyavo haviṣā budhyamānāḥ | vayaṃ samarye vidatheṣvahnāṃ vayaṃ rāyā sahasasputra martān ||

May we, desirous of wealth, Agni,and arousing you by oblations, secure in your protection, acquire (riches); may we (be victorious) in battle, (successful) in sacrifices every day; and may we, son of strength, obtain with riches male (descendants).

यो न आगो अभ्येनो भरात्यधीदघमघशंसे दधात । जही चिकित्वो अभिशस्तिमेतामग्ने यो नो मर्चयति द्वयेन ॥

yo na āgo abhyeno bharātyadhīdaghamaghaśaṃse dadhāta | jahī cikitvo abhiśastimetāmagne yo no marcayati dvayena ||

May Agni inflict (evil) upon the evil-doer, who commits offence, or wickedness against us; destroy, sagacious Agni, the calumniator who injures us in these two ways.

त्वामस्या व्युषि देव पूर्वे दूतं कृण्वाना अयजन्त हव्यैः । संस्थे यदग्न ईयसे रयीणां देवो मर्तैर्वसुभिरिध्यमानः ॥

tvāmasyā vyuṣi deva pūrve dūtaṃ kṛṇvānā ayajanta havyaiḥ | saṃsthe yadagna īyase rayīṇāṃ devo martairvasubhiridhyamānaḥ ||

Former (worshippers) constituting you, divine (Agni), the messenger (of the gods), have worshipped you with oblations at the dawn of day; when you proceed to the plural ce (of the aggregation) of the wealth (of sacrifice), bright-shining, kindled by the mortals who have given you an abode.

अव स्पृधि पितरं योधि विद्वान्पुत्रो यस्ते सहसः सून ऊहे । कदा चिकित्वो अभि चक्षसे नोऽग्ने कदाँ ऋतचिद्यातयासे ॥

ava spṛdhi pitaraṃ yodhi vidvānputro yaste sahasaḥ sūna ūhe | kadā cikitvo abhi cakṣase no'gne kadā~ ṛtacidyātayāse ||

Convey him (to safety) in war, son of strength, who like a wise son offers to you (reverence) as to a father; when, sagacious Agni do you look upon us; when, director of sacrifice, do you direct us (to good ways).

भूरि नाम वन्दमानो दधाति पिता वसो यदि तज्जोषयासे । कुविद्देवस्य सहसा चकानः सुम्नमग्निर्वनते वावृधानः ॥

bhūri nāma vandamāno dadhāti pitā vaso yadi tajjoṣayāse | kuviddevasya sahasā cakānaḥ sumnamagnirvanate vāvṛdhānaḥ ||

Glorifying you, he offers the copious oblation, if, bestower of dwellings, you as a father are plural ased to accept it; Agni, ever augmenting, and desirous (to be friend), by hismight, the devout (worshipper, offering) copious oblations, bestows upon him happiness.

त्वमङ्ग जरितारं यविष्ठ विश्वान्यग्ने दुरिताति पर्षि । स्तेना अदृश्रन्रिपवो जनासोऽज्ञातकेता वृजिना अभूवन् ॥

tvamaṅga jaritāraṃ yaviṣṭha viśvānyagne duritāti parṣi | stenā adṛśranripavo janāso'jñātaketā vṛjinā abhūvan ||

Agni, young (of the gods), verily you bear your adorer (safe) beyond all calamities; thieves have been detected, and hostile men with cover evil intentions, have been avoided (by us).

इमे यामासस्त्वद्रिगभूवन्वसवे वा तदिदागो अवाचि । नाहायमग्निरभिशस्तये नो न रीषते वावृधानः परा दात् ॥

ime yāmāsastvadrigabhūvanvasave vā tadidāgo avāci | nāhāyamagnirabhiśastaye no na rīṣate vāvṛdhānaḥ parā dāt ||

These (encomiums) are directed towards you, but perhaps an offence has thereby been uttered to (you), the giver of dwellings;may Agni,augmenting (by our praise), yield us not up to the maligner or the malevolent.
