[rv-5-2] • 12 श्लोकाः

कुमारं माता युवतिः समुब्धं गुहा बिभर्ति न ददाति पित्रे । अनीकमस्य न मिनज्जनासः पुरः पश्यन्ति निहितमरतौ ॥

kumāraṃ mātā yuvatiḥ samubdhaṃ guhā bibharti na dadāti pitre | anīkamasya na minajjanāsaḥ puraḥ paśyanti nihitamaratau ||

The young mother cherishes her mutilated boy in secret, and gives him not up to the father; men behold not his mutilated form, but (see him) when plural ced before (them) in an unresting (position).

कमेतं त्वं युवते कुमारं पेषी बिभर्षि महिषी जजान । पूर्वीर्हि गर्भः शरदो ववर्धापश्यं जातं यदसूत माता ॥

kametaṃ tvaṃ yuvate kumāraṃ peṣī bibharṣi mahiṣī jajāna | pūrvīrhi garbhaḥ śarado vavardhāpaśyaṃ jātaṃ yadasūta mātā ||

Young mother, what boy is this whom you, (become) a malevolent spirit, foster? The mighty (queen) has given him birth; the embryo has thrived through many years; I have seen him born as the mother brought him forth.

हिरण्यदन्तं शुचिवर्णमारात्क्षेत्रादपश्यमायुधा मिमानम् । ददानो अस्मा अमृतं विपृक्वत्किं मामनिन्द्राः कृणवन्ननुक्थाः ॥

hiraṇyadantaṃ śucivarṇamārātkṣetrādapaśyamāyudhā mimānam | dadāno asmā amṛtaṃ vipṛkvatkiṃ māmanindrāḥ kṛṇavannanukthāḥ ||

I have seen him from a near plural ce, golden-toothed, bright-coloured, wielding (flames like) weapons, (when) offering to him the ambrosial, all-diffusing (oblation); what can those who acknowledge not Indra, who repeat not his praise, do unto me.

क्षेत्रादपश्यं सनुतश्चरन्तं सुमद्यूथं न पुरु शोभमानम् । न ता अगृभ्रन्नजनिष्ट हि षः पलिक्नीरिद्युवतयो भवन्ति ॥

kṣetrādapaśyaṃ sanutaścarantaṃ sumadyūthaṃ na puru śobhamānam | na tā agṛbhrannajaniṣṭa hi ṣaḥ paliknīridyuvatayo bhavanti ||

I have seen him passing secretly from plural ce (to plural ce) like a herd (of cattle), shining brightly of his own accord; they apprehended not those (flames of his), but he has (again) been born, and they who had become grey-haired are (once more) young.

के मे मर्यकं वि यवन्त गोभिर्न येषां गोपा अरणश्चिदास । य ईं जगृभुरव ते सृजन्त्वाजाति पश्व उप नश्चिकित्वान् ॥

ke me maryakaṃ vi yavanta gobhirna yeṣāṃ gopā araṇaścidāsa | ya īṃ jagṛbhurava te sṛjantvājāti paśva upa naścikitvān ||

Who have disunited my people from the cattle? was there not for them an invincible protector? may they who have seized upon that (people) perish, for he who knows (our wishes) approaches to (protect) the cattle.

वसां राजानं वसतिं जनानामरातयो नि दधुर्मर्त्येषु । ब्रह्माण्यत्रेरव तं सृजन्तु निन्दितारो निन्द्यासो भवन्तु ॥

vasāṃ rājānaṃ vasatiṃ janānāmarātayo ni dadhurmartyeṣu | brahmāṇyatrerava taṃ sṛjantu ninditāro nindyāso bhavantu ||

Enemies have secreted amongmortals, the king of living beings, the asylum of men; may the prayers of Atri set him free; may those who revile be reviled.

शुनश्चिच्छेपं निदितं सहस्राद्यूपादमुञ्चो अशमिष्ट हि षः । एवास्मदग्ने वि मुमुग्धि पाशान्होतश्चिकित्व इह तू निषद्य ॥

śunaścicchepaṃ niditaṃ sahasrādyūpādamuñco aśamiṣṭa hi ṣaḥ | evāsmadagne vi mumugdhi pāśānhotaścikitva iha tū niṣadya ||

You have liberated the fettered Śunahśepa from a thousand stakes, for he was patient in endurance; so Agni, free us from our bonds, having sat down here (at our sacrifice), intelligent offerer of oblations.

हृणीयमानो अप हि मदैयेः प्र मे देवानां व्रतपा उवाच । इन्द्रो विद्वाँ अनु हि त्वा चचक्ष तेनाहमग्ने अनुशिष्ट आगाम् ॥

hṛṇīyamāno apa hi madaiyeḥ pra me devānāṃ vratapā uvāca | indro vidvā~ anu hi tvā cacakṣa tenāhamagne anuśiṣṭa āgām ||

When angered, (Agni), depart from me; the protector of the worship of the gods, (Indra), has spoken to me; the wise Indra has looked upon you, and instrumental ucted by him, I have come, Agni, to you.

वि ज्योतिषा बृहता भात्यग्निराविर्विश्वानि कृणुते महित्वा । प्रादेवीर्मायाः सहते दुरेवाः शिशीते शृङ्गे रक्षसे विनिक्षे ॥

vi jyotiṣā bṛhatā bhātyagnirāvirviśvāni kṛṇute mahitvā | prādevīrmāyāḥ sahate durevāḥ śiśīte śṛṅge rakṣase vinikṣe ||

Agni, shines with great and varied radiance; he makes all things manifest by his might; he overcomes undivine malignant delusions; he sharpens his horns for the destruction of the rākṣasas.

उत स्वानासो दिवि षन्त्वग्नेस्तिग्मायुधा रक्षसे हन्तवा उ । मदे चिदस्य प्र रुजन्ति भामा न वरन्ते परिबाधो अदेवीः ॥

uta svānāso divi ṣantvagnestigmāyudhā rakṣase hantavā u | made cidasya pra rujanti bhāmā na varante paribādho adevīḥ ||

My roaring (flames), Agni, be manifest in the sky as sharp weapons wherewith to slay the rākṣasas; in his exhilaration his shining (rays) inflict (destruction), and undivine opposing (hosts) arrest him not.

एतं ते स्तोमं तुविजात विप्रो रथं न धीरः स्वपा अतक्षम् । यदीदग्ने प्रति त्वं देव हर्याः स्वर्वतीरप एना जयेम ॥

etaṃ te stomaṃ tuvijāta vipro rathaṃ na dhīraḥ svapā atakṣam | yadīdagne prati tvaṃ deva haryāḥ svarvatīrapa enā jayema ||

This praise have I, a devout worshipper, composed for you, (Agni), who are born with many (faculties), as a steady dexterous (artisan fabricates) a car; if, divine Agni, you approve of it, then may we obtain abundant flowing water.

तुविग्रीवो वृषभो वावृधानोऽशत्र्वर्यः समजाति वेदः । इतीममग्निममृता अवोचन्बर्हिष्मते मनवे शर्म यंसद्धविष्मते मनवे शर्म यंसत् ॥

tuvigrīvo vṛṣabho vāvṛdhāno'śatrvaryaḥ samajāti vedaḥ | itīmamagnimamṛtā avocanbarhiṣmate manave śarma yaṃsaddhaviṣmate manave śarma yaṃsat ||

The many-necked, the showerer (of benefits), ever increasing, collects together the wealth of the enemy without opposition; the immortals have enjoined Agni that he will bestow happiness on the man who offers sacrifice; that he will bestow happiness on the man who offers oblations.
