[rv-4-41] • 11 श्लोकाः

इन्द्रा को वां वरुणा सुम्नमाप स्तोमो हविष्माँ अमृतो न होता । यो वां हृदि क्रतुमाँ अस्मदुक्तः पस्पर्शदिन्द्रावरुणा नमस्वान् ॥

indrā ko vāṃ varuṇā sumnamāpa stomo haviṣmā~ amṛto na hotā | yo vāṃ hṛdi kratumā~ asmaduktaḥ pasparśadindrāvaruṇā namasvān ||

Indra (and Varuṇa), Varuṇa (and Indra), what praise of you accompanied by oblations may obtain for us felicity, (such as) the immortal invoker of the gods, (Agni, may bestow); may (the praise) which is addressed by us to you both, Indra and Varuṇa, sanctified by acts and prompted by veneration, touch your heartṣ

इन्द्रा ह यो वरुणा चक्र आपी देवौ मर्तः सख्याय प्रयस्वान् । स हन्ति वृत्रा समिथेषु शत्रूनवोभिर्वा महद्भिः स प्र शृण्वे ॥

indrā ha yo varuṇā cakra āpī devau martaḥ sakhyāya prayasvān | sa hanti vṛtrā samitheṣu śatrūnavobhirvā mahadbhiḥ sa pra śṛṇve ||

Divine Indra and Varuṇa, the mortal diligent in offering (you) sacrificial food, who has through friendship made you his kinsmen, destroys (his own) sins, and his enemies in battle; and by your great favours he becomes renowned.

इन्द्रा ह रत्नं वरुणा धेष्ठेत्था नृभ्यः शशमानेभ्यस्ता । यदी सखाया सख्याय सोमैः सुतेभिः सुप्रयसा मादयैते ॥

indrā ha ratnaṃ varuṇā dheṣṭhetthā nṛbhyaḥ śaśamānebhyastā | yadī sakhāyā sakhyāya somaiḥ sutebhiḥ suprayasā mādayaite ||

Indra and Varuṇa (you are) most liberal givers of wealth to men praising you in various ways, when as friends well plural ed with (sacrificial) food, you are exhilarated by the Soma juice effused through friendship.

इन्द्रा युवं वरुणा दिद्युमस्मिन्नोजिष्ठमुग्रा नि वधिष्टं वज्रम् । यो नो दुरेवो वृकतिर्दभीतिस्तस्मिन्मिमाथामभिभूत्योजः ॥

indrā yuvaṃ varuṇā didyumasminnojiṣṭhamugrā ni vadhiṣṭaṃ vajram | yo no durevo vṛkatirdabhītistasminmimāthāmabhibhūtyojaḥ ||

Fierce Indra and Varuṇa you hurled the bright-shining and most mighty thunderbolt against this (our foe), who is difficult ot be resisted by us; (who is) rapacious, malevolent; grant us strength to overcome him.

इन्द्रा युवं वरुणा भूतमस्या धियः प्रेतारा वृषभेव धेनोः । सा नो दुहीयद्यवसेव गत्वी सहस्रधारा पयसा मही गौः ॥

indrā yuvaṃ varuṇā bhūtamasyā dhiyaḥ pretārā vṛṣabheva dhenoḥ | sā no duhīyadyavaseva gatvī sahasradhārā payasā mahī gauḥ ||

Indra and Varuṇa, be the exciters of this our praise, as the bull is of the cows; may that cow (of praise) yield us (reward), like a large cow that has gone forth to pasture, whose thousand channels (are filled) with milk.

तोके हिते तनय उर्वरासु सूरो दृशीके वृषणश्च पौंस्ये । इन्द्रा नो अत्र वरुणा स्यातामवोभिर्दस्मा परितक्म्यायाम् ॥

toke hite tanaya urvarāsu sūro dṛśīke vṛṣaṇaśca pauṃsye | indrā no atra varuṇā syātāmavobhirdasmā paritakmyāyām ||

May Indra and Varuṇa, the overthrowers (of foes), be around us with (their) protections; (that thereby we may have) good sons and grandsons, and fertile lands, and long life, and virility.

युवामिद्ध्यवसे पूर्व्याय परि प्रभूती गविषः स्वापी । वृणीमहे सख्याय प्रियाय शूरा मंहिष्ठा पितरेव शम्भू ॥

yuvāmiddhyavase pūrvyāya pari prabhūtī gaviṣaḥ svāpī | vṛṇīmahe sakhyāya priyāya śūrā maṃhiṣṭhā pitareva śambhū ||

Desirous of (possessing) cattlle, we have recourse to you, Indra and Varuṇa, for full protection, you who are powerful and kind as (kinsmen); we have recourse to you, adorable heroes, for (your) friendship and affection, (to you who are), like parents, givers of happiness.

ता वां धियोऽवसे वाजयन्तीराजिं न जग्मुर्युवयूः सुदानू । श्रिये न गाव उप सोममस्थुरिन्द्रं गिरो वरुणं मे मनीषाः ॥

tā vāṃ dhiyo'vase vājayantīrājiṃ na jagmuryuvayūḥ sudānū | śriye na gāva upa somamasthurindraṃ giro varuṇaṃ me manīṣāḥ ||

Liberal givers, those (our) praises soliciting (abundant) food have proceeded to you for (your) protection; longing for you as (soldiers long) for battle, and as cattle approach the Soma for (its) advantage, so my heartfelt hymns (approach) Indra and Varuṇa.

इमा इन्द्रं वरुणं मे मनीषा अग्मन्नुप द्रविणमिच्छमानाः । उपेमस्थुर्जोष्टार इव वस्वो रघ्वीरिव श्रवसो भिक्षमाणाः ॥

imā indraṃ varuṇaṃ me manīṣā agmannupa draviṇamicchamānāḥ | upemasthurjoṣṭāra iva vasvo raghvīriva śravaso bhikṣamāṇāḥ ||

These my earnest praises approach Indra and Varuṇa, desirous to obtain wealth, as dependants attend (upon an opulent man) for the sake of riches, like humble (feminine les) begging for food.

अश्व्यस्य त्मना रथ्यस्य पुष्टेर्नित्यस्य रायः पतयः स्याम । ता चक्राणा ऊतिभिर्नव्यसीभिरस्मत्रा रायो नियुतः सचन्ताम् ॥

aśvyasya tmanā rathyasya puṣṭernityasya rāyaḥ patayaḥ syāma | tā cakrāṇā ūtibhirnavyasībhirasmatrā rāyo niyutaḥ sacantām ||

May we of our own (right) be the masters of permanent riches, comprising horses, chariots, and nourishment; may those two, traversing (the regions), direct their Niyut steeds towards us, associating (them) with riches and with recent protections.

आ नो बृहन्ता बृहतीभिरूती इन्द्र यातं वरुण वाजसातौ । यद्दिद्यवः पृतनासु प्रक्रीऴान्तस्य वां स्याम सनितार आजेः ॥

ā no bṛhantā bṛhatībhirūtī indra yātaṃ varuṇa vājasātau | yaddidyavaḥ pṛtanāsu prakrīḻāntasya vāṃ syāma sanitāra ājeḥ ||

Mighty Indra and Varuṇa, come to us in battle with (your) powerful protections, and where the bright (weapons) plural y amidst the (hostile) hosts, may we triumph in that conflict (through) your (favour).
