[rv-4-24] • 11 श्लोकाः

का सुष्टुतिः शवसः सूनुमिन्द्रमर्वाचीनं राधस आ ववर्तत् । ददिर्हि वीरो गृणते वसूनि स गोपतिर्निष्षिधां नो जनासः ॥

kā suṣṭutiḥ śavasaḥ sūnumindramarvācīnaṃ rādhasa ā vavartat | dadirhi vīro gṛṇate vasūni sa gopatirniṣṣidhāṃ no janāsaḥ ||

What suitable praise may bring the son of strength, Indra, before us, to give us wealth; the hero, the lord of cattle, is the donor, oḥ man, of the wealth of his adversaries to him who glorifies him.

स वृत्रहत्ये हव्यः स ईड्यः स सुष्टुत इन्द्रः सत्यराधाः । स यामन्ना मघवा मर्त्याय ब्रह्मण्यते सुष्वये वरिवो धात् ॥

sa vṛtrahatye havyaḥ sa īḍyaḥ sa suṣṭuta indraḥ satyarādhāḥ | sa yāmannā maghavā martyāya brahmaṇyate suṣvaye varivo dhāt ||

He, Indra, is to be invoked for the destruction of Vṛtra; he, the deservedly praised, is to be worshipped; the real donor of wealth, he, Maghavan, gives wealth, (acquired) in battle, to the mortal offers him prayer and libations.

तमिन्नरो वि ह्वयन्ते समीके रिरिक्वांसस्तन्वः कृण्वत त्राम् । मिथो यत्त्यागमुभयासो अग्मन्नरस्तोकस्य तनयस्य सातौ ॥

taminnaro vi hvayante samīke ririkvāṃsastanvaḥ kṛṇvata trām | mitho yattyāgamubhayāso agmannarastokasya tanayasya sātau ||

Men verily call upon him in battle; the (devout) inflicters of austerity upon their person ns constitute him their preserver; when both (the worshipper and the priest) approach together the bountiful Indra, men (succeed) in (obtaining) the gift of sons and grandsons.

क्रतूयन्ति क्षितयो योग उग्राशुषाणासो मिथो अर्णसातौ । सं यद्विशोऽववृत्रन्त युध्मा आदिन्नेम इन्द्रयन्ते अभीके ॥

kratūyanti kṣitayo yoga ugrāśuṣāṇāso mitho arṇasātau | saṃ yadviśo'vavṛtranta yudhmā ādinnema indrayante abhīke ||

Powerful Indra, men variously dispersed, come mutually together to celebrate sacred rites for the sake of obtaining rain; when men who are combatants assemble in battle, there are some of them who rely upon Indra.

आदिद्ध नेम इन्द्रियं यजन्त आदित्पक्तिः पुरोऴाशं रिरिच्यात् । आदित्सोमो वि पपृच्यादसुष्वीनादिज्जुजोष वृषभं यजध्यै ॥

ādiddha nema indriyaṃ yajanta āditpaktiḥ puroḻāśaṃ riricyāt | āditsomo vi papṛcyādasuṣvīnādijjujoṣa vṛṣabhaṃ yajadhyai ||

Thereupon some verily worship the powerful (Indra); thereupon one man prepares the buttered cake that he may offer it to (Indra); thereupon the offerer of the Soma he distinguishes from him who presents no libation; thereupon some one rejoices to worship the showerer (of benefits).

कृणोत्यस्मै वरिवो य इत्थेन्द्राय सोममुशते सुनोति । सध्रीचीनेन मनसाविवेनन्तमित्सखायं कृणुते समत्सु ॥

kṛṇotyasmai varivo ya itthendrāya somamuśate sunoti | sadhrīcīnena manasāvivenantamitsakhāyaṃ kṛṇute samatsu ||

Indra bestows wealth upon him who offers a libation to him, desiring it, though in another sphere; and, with a humble mind, makes him who is devoted to him his friend in combats.

य इन्द्राय सुनवत्सोममद्य पचात्पक्तीरुत भृज्जाति धानाः । प्रति मनायोरुचथानि हर्यन्तस्मिन्दधद्वृषणं शुष्ममिन्द्रः ॥

ya indrāya sunavatsomamadya pacātpaktīruta bhṛjjāti dhānāḥ | prati manāyorucathāni haryantasmindadhadvṛṣaṇaṃ śuṣmamindraḥ ||

Indra accepting graciously the praises of his devoted (worshipper), who today pours out the libation to him who toasts the buttered cakes, or fries barley for Indra, exercises towards him the power that grants his desires.

यदा समर्यं व्यचेदृघावा दीर्घं यदाजिमभ्यख्यदर्यः । अचिक्रदद्वृषणं पत्न्यच्छा दुरोण आ निशितं सोमसुद्भिः ॥

yadā samaryaṃ vyacedṛghāvā dīrghaṃ yadājimabhyakhyadaryaḥ | acikradadvṛṣaṇaṃ patnyacchā duroṇa ā niśitaṃ somasudbhiḥ ||

When the destroyer (of enemies) distinguishes a mortal foe; when the lord is engaged in the long (continued) battle, (his) bride summons to the dwelling the showerer (of benefits), encompassed by the offerers of the libation.

भूयसा वस्नमचरत्कनीयोऽविक्रीतो अकानिषं पुनर्यन् । स भूयसा कनीयो नारिरेचीद्दीना दक्षा वि दुहन्ति प्र वाणम् ॥

bhūyasā vasnamacaratkanīyo'vikrīto akāniṣaṃ punaryan | sa bhūyasā kanīyo nārirecīddīnā dakṣā vi duhanti pra vāṇam ||

A man has realized a small price for an article of great value, and again coming (to the buyer he says) this has not been sold; I require the full price; but he does not recover a small price by a large (equivalent); whether helpless or clever they adhere to their bargain.

क इमं दशभिर्ममेन्द्रं क्रीणाति धेनुभिः । यदा वृत्राणि जङ्घनदथैनं मे पुनर्ददत् ॥

ka imaṃ daśabhirmamendraṃ krīṇāti dhenubhiḥ | yadā vṛtrāṇi jaṅghanadathainaṃ me punardadat ||

Who buys him, my Indra, with ten kine? when he shall have slain (your) foes, then let (the purchaser) give him again to me.

नू ष्टुत इन्द्र नू गृणान इषं जरित्रे नद्यो न पीपेः । अकारि ते हरिवो ब्रह्म नव्यं धिया स्याम रथ्यः सदासाः ॥

nū ṣṭuta indra nū gṛṇāna iṣaṃ jaritre nadyo na pīpeḥ | akāri te harivo brahma navyaṃ dhiyā syāma rathyaḥ sadāsāḥ ||

Glorified (in the past), glorified, Indra, at present, satisfy your worshipper with food, as rivers (are filled with water); lord of horses, a new hymn has been made for you; may we, possessed of chariots, be ever diligent in your praise.
