[rv-4-22] • 11 श्लोकाः

यन्न इन्द्रो जुजुषे यच्च वष्टि तन्नो महान्करति शुष्म्या चित् । ब्रह्म स्तोमं मघवा सोममुक्था यो अश्मानं शवसा बिभ्रदेति ॥

yanna indro jujuṣe yacca vaṣṭi tanno mahānkarati śuṣmyā cit | brahma stomaṃ maghavā somamukthā yo aśmānaṃ śavasā bibhradeti ||

Since the great and mighty Indra is propitiated by our (oblations), since he desires (them) from us, may he, the possessor of opulence, who comes wielding the thunderbolt of his strength, accept the (sacrificial) food, the hymn, the Soma libation, and the prayers.

वृषा वृषन्धिं चतुरश्रिमस्यन्नुग्रो बाहुभ्यां नृतमः शचीवान् । श्रिये परुष्णीमुषमाण ऊर्णां यस्याः पर्वाणि सख्याय विव्ये ॥

vṛṣā vṛṣandhiṃ caturaśrimasyannugro bāhubhyāṃ nṛtamaḥ śacīvān | śriye paruṣṇīmuṣamāṇa ūrṇāṃ yasyāḥ parvāṇi sakhyāya vivye ||

The showerer (of benefits), casting with his hands the quadrangular bolt that causes rain, fierce, the chief of leaders, the achiever of (glorious) acts, is desirous of the prosperity of the investing Paruṣṇi (river), whose (bordering) districts he has frequented through regard.

यो देवो देवतमो जायमानो महो वाजेभिर्महद्भिश्च शुष्मैः । दधानो वज्रं बाह्वोरुशन्तं द्याममेन रेजयत्प्र भूम ॥

yo devo devatamo jāyamāno maho vājebhirmahadbhiśca śuṣmaiḥ | dadhāno vajraṃ bāhvoruśantaṃ dyāmamena rejayatpra bhūma ||

Who diine, most divine, as soon as born (was endowed) with abundant viands, and great energies, holding in his arms the willing thunderbolt, and causing by his strength (both) heaven and earth to tremble.

विश्वा रोधांसि प्रवतश्च पूर्वीर्द्यौॠष्वाज्जनिमन्रेजत क्षाः । आ मातरा भरति शुष्म्या गोर्नृवत्परिज्मन्नोनुवन्त वाताः ॥

viśvā rodhāṃsi pravataśca pūrvīrdyauṝṣvājjanimanrejata kṣāḥ | ā mātarā bharati śuṣmyā gornṛvatparijmannonuvanta vātāḥ ||

All the high plural ces, and the many low paces, the heaven and the earth, trembled (through fear) of the mighty (Indra) at his birth; the strong (Indra) cherishes the parents of the moving (Sun), and the winds, like men, make a noise in their peregrination.

ता तू त इन्द्र महतो महानि विश्वेष्वित्सवनेषु प्रवाच्या । यच्छूर धृष्णो धृषता दधृष्वानहिं वज्रेण शवसाविवेषीः ॥

tā tū ta indra mahato mahāni viśveṣvitsavaneṣu pravācyā | yacchūra dhṛṣṇo dhṛṣatā dadhṛṣvānahiṃ vajreṇa śavasāviveṣīḥ ||

Of you, Indra, who are mighty, great are deeds, and to be proclaimed at all sacrifices, inasmuch as, high-minded hero, you, sustaining (the world), have by your strength slain Ahi with the resistless thunderbolt.

ता तू ते सत्या तुविनृम्ण विश्वा प्र धेनवः सिस्रते वृष्ण ऊध्नः । अधा ह त्वद्वृषमणो भियानाः प्र सिन्धवो जवसा चक्रमन्त ॥

tā tū te satyā tuvinṛmṇa viśvā pra dhenavaḥ sisrate vṛṣṇa ūdhnaḥ | adhā ha tvadvṛṣamaṇo bhiyānāḥ pra sindhavo javasā cakramanta ||

Most powerful Indra, all these, your exploits, are verily true: (through fear of you), the showerer (of benefits), the cows shed (milk) from their udders; then, benevolent-minded (Indra), the rivers, fearing you, flow with rapidity.

अत्राह ते हरिवस्ता उ देवीरवोभिरिन्द्र स्तवन्त स्वसारः । यत्सीमनु प्र मुचो बद्बधाना दीर्घामनु प्रसितिं स्यन्दयध्यै ॥

atrāha te harivastā u devīravobhirindra stavanta svasāraḥ | yatsīmanu pra muco badbadhānā dīrghāmanu prasitiṃ syandayadhyai ||

Then, Indra, lord of horses, the divine sister (rivers) praise (you) for your protection when you did set them free to flow, after having been impeded (by Vṛtra) through a long confinement.

पिपीऴे अंशुर्मद्यो न सिन्धुरा त्वा शमी शशमानस्य शक्तिः । अस्मद्र्यक्छुशुचानस्य यम्या आशुर्न रश्मिं तुव्योजसं गोः ॥

pipīḻe aṃśurmadyo na sindhurā tvā śamī śaśamānasya śaktiḥ | asmadryakchuśucānasya yamyā āśurna raśmiṃ tuvyojasaṃ goḥ ||

The exhilarating Soma juice has been expressed; now may the curren flow to you, and may the expiatory power of the illustrious utterer of praise be directed towards us, as the quick rider holds firmly the reins of the steed.

अस्मे वर्षिष्ठा कृणुहि ज्येष्ठा नृम्णानि सत्रा सहुरे सहांसि । अस्मभ्यं वृत्रा सुहनानि रन्धि जहि वधर्वनुषो मर्त्यस्य ॥

asme varṣiṣṭhā kṛṇuhi jyeṣṭhā nṛmṇāni satrā sahure sahāṃsi | asmabhyaṃ vṛtrā suhanāni randhi jahi vadharvanuṣo martyasya ||

Enduring Indra, bestow upon us energies, excellent, superior, powerful; bring under subjection to us enemies deserving of death; demolish the weapon of the malevolent man.

अस्माकमित्सु शृणुहि त्वमिन्द्रास्मभ्यं चित्राँ उप माहि वाजान् । अस्मभ्यं विश्वा इषणः पुरंधीरस्माकं सु मघवन्बोधि गोदाः ॥

asmākamitsu śṛṇuhi tvamindrāsmabhyaṃ citrā~ upa māhi vājān | asmabhyaṃ viśvā iṣaṇaḥ puraṃdhīrasmākaṃ su maghavanbodhi godāḥ ||

Hear our praises, Indra, and bestow upon us many kinds of food; fulfil all our desires, and know yourself, Maghavan, to be to us the donor of cattle.

नू ष्टुत इन्द्र नू गृणान इषं जरित्रे नद्यो न पीपेः । अकारि ते हरिवो ब्रह्म नव्यं धिया स्याम रथ्यः सदासाः ॥

nū ṣṭuta indra nū gṛṇāna iṣaṃ jaritre nadyo na pīpeḥ | akāri te harivo brahma navyaṃ dhiyā syāma rathyaḥ sadāsāḥ ||

Glorified (in the past), glorified, Indra, at present, satisfy your worshipper with food, as rivers (are filled with water); lord of horses, a new hymn has been made for you; may we, possessed of chariots, be ever diligent in (your) praise.
