[rv-3-5] • 11 श्लोकाः

प्रत्यग्निरुषसश्चेकितानोऽबोधि विप्रः पदवीः कवीनाम् । पृथुपाजा देवयद्भिः समिद्धोऽप द्वारा तमसो वह्निरावः ॥

pratyagniruṣasaścekitāno'bodhi vipraḥ padavīḥ kavīnām | pṛthupājā devayadbhiḥ samiddho'pa dvārā tamaso vahnirāvaḥ ||

The sagacious Agni, cognizant of the dawn, is awakened to (follow) the paths of the sages; the luminous Vahni, kindled by the devout, has thrown open the gates of darkness.

प्रेद्वग्निर्वावृधे स्तोमेभिर्गीर्भिः स्तोतॄणां नमस्य उक्थैः । पूर्वीॠतस्य संदृशश्चकानः सं दूतो अद्यौदुषसो विरोके ॥

predvagnirvāvṛdhe stomebhirgīrbhiḥ stotṝṇāṃ namasya ukthaiḥ | pūrvīṝtasya saṃdṛśaścakānaḥ saṃ dūto adyauduṣaso viroke ||

The adorable Agni is magnified by the hymns, the prayers, the praises, of (his) worshippers; emulating the many glories of the sun, the messenger (of the gods) shines forth at the glimmering of the dawn.

अधाय्यग्निर्मानुषीषु विक्ष्वपां गर्भो मित्र ऋतेन साधन् । आ हर्यतो यजतः सान्वस्थादभूदु विप्रो हव्यो मतीनाम् ॥

adhāyyagnirmānuṣīṣu vikṣvapāṃ garbho mitra ṛtena sādhan | ā haryato yajataḥ sānvasthādabhūdu vipro havyo matīnām ||

Agni, the embryo of the waters, the friend (of the pious), accomplishing (all desires) with truth, has been plural ced (by the gods) among men, the descendants of Manu; desirable and adorable, he has taken his station on high, where the wise Agni is to receive the oblations of the devout.

मित्रो अग्निर्भवति यत्समिद्धो मित्रो होता वरुणो जातवेदाः । मित्रो अध्वर्युरिषिरो दमूना मित्रः सिन्धूनामुत पर्वतानाम् ॥

mitro agnirbhavati yatsamiddho mitro hotā varuṇo jātavedāḥ | mitro adhvaryuriṣiro damūnā mitraḥ sindhūnāmuta parvatānām ||

Agni, when kindled, is Mitra; and, as Mitra, is the invoker (of the gods); Varuṇa is Jātavedas; Mitra is the ministering priest; Damunas is the agitator (Vāyu); Mitra (is the associate) of rivers and mountains.

पाति प्रियं रिपो अग्रं पदं वेः पाति यह्वश्चरणं सूर्यस्य । पाति नाभा सप्तशीर्षाणमग्निः पाति देवानामुपमादमृष्वः ॥

pāti priyaṃ ripo agraṃ padaṃ veḥ pāti yahvaścaraṇaṃ sūryasya | pāti nābhā saptaśīrṣāṇamagniḥ pāti devānāmupamādamṛṣvaḥ ||

The graceful (Agni) protects the primary station of the moving earth; mighty, he protects the path of the sun; he protects the seven-headed (troop of the Maruts) in the centre between heaven and earth; he protects the exhilarating (oblations) of the gods.

ऋभुश्चक्र ईड्यं चारु नाम विश्वानि देवो वयुनानि विद्वान् । ससस्य चर्म घृतवत्पदं वेस्तदिदग्नी रक्षत्यप्रयुच्छन् ॥

ṛbhuścakra īḍyaṃ cāru nāma viśvāni devo vayunāni vidvān | sasasya carma ghṛtavatpadaṃ vestadidagnī rakṣatyaprayucchan ||

The mighty, divine Agni knowing all (things) that are to be known, made the commendable and beautiful water, the glossy skin, the station of the diffused slumbering (Agni), and, ever vigilant preserves it.

आ योनिमग्निर्घृतवन्तमस्थात्पृथुप्रगाणमुशन्तमुशानः । दीद्यानः शुचिॠष्वः पावकः पुनःपुनर्मातरा नव्यसी कः ॥

ā yonimagnirghṛtavantamasthātpṛthupragāṇamuśantamuśānaḥ | dīdyānaḥ śuciṝṣvaḥ pāvakaḥ punaḥpunarmātarā navyasī kaḥ ||

Agni has taken his station in an asylum, brilliant, much-lauded, and as desirous (of receiving him) as he is (torepair to it); radiant, pure, vast and purifying, he repeatedly renovates his parents, (Heaven and Earth).

सद्यो जात ओषधीभिर्ववक्षे यदी वर्धन्ति प्रस्वो घृतेन । आप इव प्रवता शुम्भमाना उरुष्यदग्निः पित्रोरुपस्थे ॥

sadyo jāta oṣadhībhirvavakṣe yadī vardhanti prasvo ghṛtena | āpa iva pravatā śumbhamānā uruṣyadagniḥ pitrorupasthe ||

As soon as genitive rated he is borne aloft by the plural nts, which grow flourishing by moisture, as the beautifying waters descend; may he, in the bosom of his parents, protect us.

उदु ष्टुतः समिधा यह्वो अद्यौद्वर्ष्मन्दिवो अधि नाभा पृथिव्याः । मित्रो अग्निरीड्यो मातरिश्वा दूतो वक्षद्यजथाय देवान् ॥

udu ṣṭutaḥ samidhā yahvo adyaudvarṣmandivo adhi nābhā pṛthivyāḥ | mitro agnirīḍyo mātariśvā dūto vakṣadyajathāya devān ||

Praised and (nourished) by fuel, the mighty Agni, stationed on the (altar the) navel of the earth, in the form of the firmament, has shone (brightly); may the friendly and adorable Agni who respires in the mid-heaven, the messenger (of the gods), bring them to the sacrifice.

उदस्तम्भीत्समिधा नाकमृष्वोऽग्निर्भवन्नुत्तमो रोचनानाम् । यदी भृगुभ्यः परि मातरिश्वा गुहा सन्तं हव्यवाहं समीधे ॥

udastambhītsamidhā nākamṛṣvo'gnirbhavannuttamo rocanānām | yadī bhṛgubhyaḥ pari mātariśvā guhā santaṃ havyavāhaṃ samīdhe ||

The mighty Agni, being the best of the heavenly luminaries, sustained the heaven with radiance, when the wind kindled the bearer of oblations, (till then concealed) in a cave from the Bhṛgus.

इऴामग्ने पुरुदंसं सनिं गोः शश्वत्तमं हवमानाय साध । स्यान्नः सूनुस्तनयो विजावाग्ने सा ते सुमतिर्भूत्वस्मे ॥

iḻāmagne purudaṃsaṃ saniṃ goḥ śaśvattamaṃ havamānāya sādha | syānnaḥ sūnustanayo vijāvāgne sā te sumatirbhūtvasme ||

Grant, Agni, to the offerer of the oblation the earth, the bestower of cattle, the means of many (pious rites); such that it may be perpetual; may there be to us sons and grandsons born in our race, and may your good-will ever be upon us.
