[rv-3-4] • 11 श्लोकाः

समित्समित्सुमना बोध्यस्मे शुचाशुचा सुमतिं रासि वस्वः । आ देव देवान्यजथाय वक्षि सखा सखीन्त्सुमना यक्ष्यग्ने ॥

samitsamitsumanā bodhyasme śucāśucā sumatiṃ rāsi vasvaḥ | ā deva devānyajathāya vakṣi sakhā sakhīntsumanā yakṣyagne ||

Repeatedly, kindled, (Agni), wake up favourably disposed; (endowed) with reiterated lustre, entertain the kind purpose of (granting us) wealth; bring, divine Agni, the gods to the sacrifice; do you, the friend (of the gods), minister, well-affected, to (your) parents.

यं देवासस्त्रिरहन्नायजन्ते दिवेदिवे वरुणो मित्रो अग्निः । सेमं यज्ञं मधुमन्तं कृधी नस्तनूनपाद्घृतयोनिं विधन्तम् ॥

yaṃ devāsastrirahannāyajante divedive varuṇo mitro agniḥ | semaṃ yajñaṃ madhumantaṃ kṛdhī nastanūnapādghṛtayoniṃ vidhantam ||

Tanūnapāt, whom the deities, Mitra, Varuṇa and Agni, worship daily thrice a day, render this our sacred rain-engendering sacrifice productive of water.

प्र दीधितिर्विश्ववारा जिगाति होतारमिऴः प्रथमं यजध्यै । अच्छा नमोभिर्वृषभं वन्दध्यै स देवान्यक्षदिषितो यजीयान् ॥

pra dīdhitirviśvavārā jigāti hotāramiḻaḥ prathamaṃ yajadhyai | acchā namobhirvṛṣabhaṃ vandadhyai sa devānyakṣadiṣito yajīyān ||

May the all-approved praise reach the invoker of the gods; may Iḷā first proceed to worship and to praise with prostrations the showerer (of benefits) in his presence; may the adorable (Agni), instrumental gated (by us), worship the gods.

ऊर्ध्वो वां गातुरध्वरे अकार्यूर्ध्वा शोचींषि प्रस्थिता रजांसि । दिवो वा नाभा न्यसादि होता स्तृणीमहि देवव्यचा वि बर्हिः ॥

ūrdhvo vāṃ gāturadhvare akāryūrdhvā śocīṃṣi prasthitā rajāṃsi | divo vā nābhā nyasādi hotā stṛṇīmahi devavyacā vi barhiḥ ||

An upward path has been prepared for you both in the sacrifice; the blazing oblations soar aloft; the invoker of the gods has sat down in the centre of the radiant (hall); let us strew the sacred grass for the seats of the gods.

सप्त होत्राणि मनसा वृणाना इन्वन्तो विश्वं प्रति यन्नृतेन । नृपेशसो विदथेषु प्र जाता अभीमं यज्ञं वि चरन्त पूर्वीः ॥

sapta hotrāṇi manasā vṛṇānā invanto viśvaṃ prati yannṛtena | nṛpeśaso vidatheṣu pra jātā abhīmaṃ yajñaṃ vi caranta pūrvīḥ ||

The gods who gratify the universe with rain are present at the seven offerings (of the ministering priests), when solicited with (sincerity of) mind; may the many deities who are engendered in sensible shapes at sacrifices come to this our rite.

आ भन्दमाने उषसा उपाके उत स्मयेते तन्वा विरूपे । यथा नो मित्रो वरुणो जुजोषदिन्द्रो मरुत्वाँ उत वा महोभिः ॥

ā bhandamāne uṣasā upāke uta smayete tanvā virūpe | yathā no mitro varuṇo jujoṣadindro marutvā~ uta vā mahobhiḥ ||

May the adored Day and Night, combined or separate, be manifest in bodily form, so that Mitra, Varuṇa, Indra, or (the latter), attended by the Maruts, may rejoice us by their glories.

दैव्या होतारा प्रथमा न्यृञ्जे सप्त पृक्षासः स्वधया मदन्ति । ऋतं शंसन्त ऋतमित्त आहुरनु व्रतं व्रतपा दीध्यानाः ॥

daivyā hotārā prathamā nyṛñje sapta pṛkṣāsaḥ svadhayā madanti | ṛtaṃ śaṃsanta ṛtamitta āhuranu vrataṃ vratapā dīdhyānāḥ ||

I propitiate the two chief divine invokers of the gods; the seven offerers of (sacrificial) food, expectant of water, gratify (Agni) with oblations; the illustrious observers of sacred rites have saluted him in every ceremony as (identifiable), verily, with water.

आ भारती भारतीभिः सजोषा इऴा देवैर्मनुष्येभिरग्निः । सरस्वती सारस्वतेभिरर्वाक्तिस्रो देवीर्बर्हिरेदं सदन्तु ॥

ā bhāratī bhāratībhiḥ sajoṣā iḻā devairmanuṣyebhiragniḥ | sarasvatī sārasvatebhirarvāktisro devīrbarhiredaṃ sadantu ||

May Bhāratī, associated with the Bhāratīs; Iḷā with the gods and men; and Agni, and Sarasvatī with the Sārasvatas; may the three goddesses sit down upon the sacred grass (strewn) before them.

तन्नस्तुरीपमध पोषयित्नु देव त्वष्टर्वि रराणः स्यस्व । यतो वीरः कर्मण्यः सुदक्षो युक्तग्रावा जायते देवकामः ॥

tannasturīpamadha poṣayitnu deva tvaṣṭarvi rarāṇaḥ syasva | yato vīraḥ karmaṇyaḥ sudakṣo yuktagrāvā jāyate devakāmaḥ ||

Divine Tvaṣṭā, being well plural ased, give issue to our procreative vigour, whence (a son), manly, devout, vigorous, wielder of the (Soma-bruising) stone, and reverencing the gods, may be born.

वनस्पतेऽव सृजोप देवानग्निर्हविः शमिता सूदयाति । सेदु होता सत्यतरो यजाति यथा देवानां जनिमानि वेद ॥

vanaspate'va sṛjopa devānagnirhaviḥ śamitā sūdayāti | sedu hotā satyataro yajāti yathā devānāṃ janimāni veda ||

Vanaspati, bring the gods nigh; may Agni, the immolator, prepare the victim; let him who is truth officiate as the ministering priest, for, verily, he knows the birth of the gods.

आ याह्यग्ने समिधानो अर्वाङिन्द्रेण देवैः सरथं तुरेभिः । बर्हिर्न आस्तामदितिः सुपुत्रा स्वाहा देवा अमृता मादयन्ताम् ॥

ā yāhyagne samidhāno arvāṅindreṇa devaiḥ sarathaṃ turebhiḥ | barhirna āstāmaditiḥ suputrā svāhā devā amṛtā mādayantām ||

Agni, kindled into flame, come to our presence in the same chariot with Indra and with the swift-moving gods; may Aditi, the mother of excellent sons, sit down on the sacred grass, and may the immortal gods be satisfied with the reverentially-offered oblation.
