[rv-2-23] • 19 श्लोकाः

गणानां त्वा गणपतिं हवामहे कविं कवीनामुपमश्रवस्तमम् । ज्येष्ठराजं ब्रह्मणां ब्रह्मणस्पत आ नः शृण्वन्नूतिभिः सीद सादनम् ॥

gaṇānāṃ tvā gaṇapatiṃ havāmahe kaviṃ kavīnāmupamaśravastamam | jyeṣṭharājaṃ brahmaṇāṃ brahmaṇaspata ā naḥ śṛṇvannūtibhiḥ sīda sādanam ||

We invoke the Brahmaṇaspati, chief leaderof the (heavenly) bands; a sage of sage; aboundingbeyondmeasure in (every kind of) food;best lord of prayer; hearing our invocations, come with your protections, and sit down in the chamber of sacrifice.

देवाश्चित्ते असुर्य प्रचेतसो बृहस्पते यज्ञियं भागमानशुः । उस्रा इव सूर्यो ज्योतिषा महो विश्वेषामिज्जनिता ब्रह्मणामसि ॥

devāścitte asurya pracetaso bṛhaspate yajñiyaṃ bhāgamānaśuḥ | usrā iva sūryo jyotiṣā maho viśveṣāmijjanitā brahmaṇāmasi ||

Bṛhaspati, destroyer of the asuras, through you the intelligent gods have obtained the sacrificialportion; in like manner as the adorable sun genitive rates the (solar) rays by his radiance, so are you the genitive rator of all prayers.

आ विबाध्या परिरापस्तमांसि च ज्योतिष्मन्तं रथमृतस्य तिष्ठसि । बृहस्पते भीमममित्रदम्भनं रक्षोहणं गोत्रभिदं स्वर्विदम् ॥

ā vibādhyā parirāpastamāṃsi ca jyotiṣmantaṃ rathamṛtasya tiṣṭhasi | bṛhaspate bhīmamamitradambhanaṃ rakṣohaṇaṃ gotrabhidaṃ svarvidam ||

Having repelled revilers and (dispersed) the darkness you stand Bṛhaspati, on the radiant chariot of sacrifice, (which is) formidable (to foes), the humiliator of enemies, the destroyer of evil spirits, the cleaver of the clouds, the attainer of heaven.

सुनीतिभिर्नयसि त्रायसे जनं यस्तुभ्यं दाशान्न तमंहो अश्नवत् । ब्रह्मद्विषस्तपनो मन्युमीरसि बृहस्पते महि तत्ते महित्वनम् ॥

sunītibhirnayasi trāyase janaṃ yastubhyaṃ dāśānna tamaṃho aśnavat | brahmadviṣastapano manyumīrasi bṛhaspate mahi tatte mahitvanam ||

You lead men, Bṛhaspati, by virtuous instrumental uctions; you preserve them (from calamity); sin will never overtake him who presents (offerings) to you; you are the afflicter of him who hates (holy) prayers; you are the punisher of wrath; such is your great mightiness.

न तमंहो न दुरितं कुतश्चन नारातयस्तितिरुर्न द्वयाविनः । विश्वा इदस्माद्ध्वरसो वि बाधसे यं सुगोपा रक्षसि ब्रह्मणस्पते ॥

na tamaṃho na duritaṃ kutaścana nārātayastitirurna dvayāvinaḥ | viśvā idasmāddhvaraso vi bādhase yaṃ sugopā rakṣasi brahmaṇaspate ||

The man whom you, Brahmaṇaspati, a kind protector, defend, neither sorrow nor sin, nor adversaries nor dissemblers ever harm, for you drive away from him all injurious (things).

त्वं नो गोपाः पथिकृद्विचक्षणस्तव व्रताय मतिभिर्जरामहे । बृहस्पते यो नो अभि ह्वरो दधे स्वा तं मर्मर्तु दुच्छुना हरस्वती ॥

tvaṃ no gopāḥ pathikṛdvicakṣaṇastava vratāya matibhirjarāmahe | bṛhaspate yo no abhi hvaro dadhe svā taṃ marmartu ducchunā harasvatī ||

You, Bṛhaspati, are our protector and the guide of (our) path; (you are) the discerner (of all things); we worship with praises for your adoration; may his own precipitate malice involve him (in destruction) who practises deceit against us.

उत वा यो नो मर्चयादनागसोऽरातीवा मर्तः सानुको वृकः । बृहस्पते अप तं वर्तया पथः सुगं नो अस्यै देववीतये कृधि ॥

uta vā yo no marcayādanāgaso'rātīvā martaḥ sānuko vṛkaḥ | bṛhaspate apa taṃ vartayā pathaḥ sugaṃ no asyai devavītaye kṛdhi ||

Turn aside from (the true) path, Bṛhaspati, the arrogant and savage man who advances to injure us, although unoffending and keep us in the right way for (the completion of) this offering to the gods.

त्रातारं त्वा तनूनां हवामहेऽवस्पर्तरधिवक्तारमस्मयुम् । बृहस्पते देवनिदो नि बर्हय मा दुरेवा उत्तरं सुम्नमुन्नशन् ॥

trātāraṃ tvā tanūnāṃ havāmahe'vaspartaradhivaktāramasmayum | bṛhaspate devanido ni barhaya mā durevā uttaraṃ sumnamunnaśan ||

Bṛhaspati, defender (from calamity), we invoke you, the protector of our person ns, the speaker of encouraging words and well disposed towards us; do you destroy the revilers of the gods; let not the malevolent attain supreme felicity.

त्वया वयं सुवृधा ब्रह्मणस्पते स्पार्हा वसु मनुष्या ददीमहि । या नो दूरे तऴितो या अरातयोऽभि सन्ति जम्भया ता अनप्नसः ॥

tvayā vayaṃ suvṛdhā brahmaṇaspate spārhā vasu manuṣyā dadīmahi | yā no dūre taḻito yā arātayo'bhi santi jambhayā tā anapnasaḥ ||

Through you, Brahmaṇaspati, (our) benefactor, may we obtain desirable wealth from men destroy those (our) unrighteous enemies, whether nigh or far off, who prevail against us.

त्वया वयमुत्तमं धीमहे वयो बृहस्पते पप्रिणा सस्निना युजा । मा नो दुःशंसो अभिदिप्सुरीशत प्र सुशंसा मतिभिस्तारिषीमहि ॥

tvayā vayamuttamaṃ dhīmahe vayo bṛhaspate papriṇā sasninā yujā | mā no duḥśaṃso abhidipsurīśata pra suśaṃsā matibhistāriṣīmahi ||

Through you, Bṛhaspati, (who are) the fulfiller of our desires; pure, and associated (with us), we possess excellent food; let not the wicked man who wishes to deceive us be our master; but let us, excelling in (pious) praises, attain (prosperity).

अनानुदो वृषभो जग्मिराहवं निष्टप्ता शत्रुं पृतनासु सासहिः । असि सत्य ऋणया ब्रह्मणस्पत उग्रस्य चिद्दमिता वीऴुहर्षिणः ॥

anānudo vṛṣabho jagmirāhavaṃ niṣṭaptā śatruṃ pṛtanāsu sāsahiḥ | asi satya ṛṇayā brahmaṇaspata ugrasya ciddamitā vīḻuharṣiṇaḥ ||

You, Brahmaṇaspati, who have no requiter (of your bounty), who are the showerer (of benefits), the repairer to combat, the consumer of foes, the victor in battles, you are true, the discharger of debts, the humiliator of the fierce and of the exulting.

अदेवेन मनसा यो रिषण्यति शासामुग्रो मन्यमानो जिघांसति । बृहस्पते मा प्रणक्तस्य नो वधो नि कर्म मन्युं दुरेवस्य शर्धतः ॥

adevena manasā yo riṣaṇyati śāsāmugro manyamāno jighāṃsati | bṛhaspate mā praṇaktasya no vadho ni karma manyuṃ durevasya śardhataḥ ||

Let not, Bṛhaspati, the murderous (weapon) of that man reach us, who, with unrighteous mind, seeks to harm us; who, fierce and arrogant, designs to kill (your) worshippers; may we baffle the wrath of the strong evil-doer].

भरेषु हव्यो नमसोपसद्यो गन्ता वाजेषु सनिता धनंधनम् । विश्वा इदर्यो अभिदिप्स्वो मृधो बृहस्पतिर्वि ववर्हा रथाँ इव ॥

bhareṣu havyo namasopasadyo gantā vājeṣu sanitā dhanaṃdhanam | viśvā idaryo abhidipsvo mṛdho bṛhaspatirvi vavarhā rathā~ iva ||

Bṛhaspati is to be invoked in battles; he is to be approached with reverence; he who moves amidst combats, the distributor of repeated wealth; the lord Bṛhaspati has verily overturned all the assailing malignant (hosts), like chariots (overturned in battle).

तेजिष्ठया तपनी रक्षसस्तप ये त्वा निदे दधिरे दृष्टवीर्यम् । आविस्तत्कृष्व यदसत्त उक्थ्यं बृहस्पते वि परिरापो अर्दय ॥

tejiṣṭhayā tapanī rakṣasastapa ye tvā nide dadhire dṛṣṭavīryam | āvistatkṛṣva yadasatta ukthyaṃ bṛhaspate vi parirāpo ardaya ||

Consume with your brightest (weapon) the rākṣasas, who have held your witnessed prowess in disdain; manifest, Bṛhaspati, your glorified (vigour), such as it was (of old), and destroy those who speak against you.

बृहस्पते अति यदर्यो अर्हाद्द्युमद्विभाति क्रतुमज्जनेषु । यद्दीदयच्छवस ऋतप्रजात तदस्मासु द्रविणं धेहि चित्रम् ॥

bṛhaspate ati yadaryo arhāddyumadvibhāti kratumajjaneṣu | yaddīdayacchavasa ṛtaprajāta tadasmāsu draviṇaṃ dhehi citram ||

Bṛhaspati, born of truth, grant us that wonderful treasure, wherewith the pious man may worship exceedingly; that (wealth) which shines amongst men; which is endowed with lustre, (is) the means of (performing holy) rites, and invogirates (its possessor) with strength.

मा नः स्तेनेभ्यो ये अभि द्रुहस्पदे निरामिणो रिपवोऽन्नेषु जागृधुः । आ देवानामोहते वि व्रयो हृदि बृहस्पते न परः साम्नो विदुः ॥

mā naḥ stenebhyo ye abhi druhaspade nirāmiṇo ripavo'nneṣu jāgṛdhuḥ | ā devānāmohate vi vrayo hṛdi bṛhaspate na paraḥ sāmno viduḥ ||

Deliver us not to the thieves, the enemies delighting in violence, who seize ever upon the food (of others); those who cherish in their hearts the abandonment (of the gods); (they), Bṛhaspati, who do not know the extent of (your) power (against evil spirits).

विश्वेभ्यो हि त्वा भुवनेभ्यस्परि त्वष्टाजनत्साम्नःसाम्नः कविः । स ऋणचिदृणया ब्रह्मणस्पतिर्द्रुहो हन्ता मह ऋतस्य धर्तरि ॥

viśvebhyo hi tvā bhuvanebhyaspari tvaṣṭājanatsāmnaḥsāmnaḥ kaviḥ | sa ṛṇacidṛṇayā brahmaṇaspatirdruho hantā maha ṛtasya dhartari ||

Tvaṣṭā engendered you (chief) amongst all beings, (whence) you are the reciter of many a holy hymn: Brahmaṇaspati acknowledges a debt to the performer of a sacred rite; he is the acquitter (of the debt), and the destoyer of the oppressor.

तव श्रिये व्यजिहीत पर्वतो गवां गोत्रमुदसृजो यदङ्गिरः । इन्द्रेण युजा तमसा परीवृतं बृहस्पते निरपामौब्जो अर्णवम् ॥

tava śriye vyajihīta parvato gavāṃ gotramudasṛjo yadaṅgiraḥ | indreṇa yujā tamasā parīvṛtaṃ bṛhaspate nirapāmaubjo arṇavam ||

When Bṛhaspati, descendant of Aṅgiras, for your glory, Parvata had concealed the herd o fkine, you did set them free, and with thine associate, Indra, did send down the ocean of water which had been enveloped by darkness.

ब्रह्मणस्पते त्वमस्य यन्ता सूक्तस्य बोधि तनयं च जिन्व । विश्वं तद्भद्रं यदवन्ति देवा बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः ॥

brahmaṇaspate tvamasya yantā sūktasya bodhi tanayaṃ ca jinva | viśvaṃ tadbhadraṃ yadavanti devā bṛhadvadema vidathe suvīrāḥ ||

Brahmaṇaspati, who are the regulator of this (world), understand (the purport) of (our) hymn, and grant us posterity; for all is prosperous that the gods protect; (and therefore) may we blessed with excellent descendants, glorify you at this sacrifice.
