[rv-2-24] • 16 श्लोकाः

सेमामविड्ढि प्रभृतिं य ईशिषेऽया विधेम नवया महा गिरा । यथा नो मीढ्वान्त्स्तवते सखा तव बृहस्पते सीषधः सोत नो मतिम् ॥

semāmaviḍḍhi prabhṛtiṃ ya īśiṣe'yā vidhema navayā mahā girā | yathā no mīḍhvāntstavate sakhā tava bṛhaspate sīṣadhaḥ sota no matim ||

Inasmuch, Bṛhaspati, as you rule (over all), accept this our propitiation; we worship you with this new and solemn hymn; since this your friend, our benefactor, celebrates you, do you fulfil our desires.

यो नन्त्वान्यनमन्न्योजसोतादर्दर्मन्युना शम्बराणि वि । प्राच्यावयदच्युता ब्रह्मणस्पतिरा चाविशद्वसुमन्तं वि पर्वतम् ॥

yo nantvānyanamannyojasotādardarmanyunā śambarāṇi vi | prācyāvayadacyutā brahmaṇaspatirā cāviśadvasumantaṃ vi parvatam ||

(You are) that Brahmaṇaspati who, by his might, has humbled those who deserved humiliation; who in his wrath rent the clouds asunder; who sent down the undescending (waters); and made way into the mountain (cave), opulent (in cattle).

तद्देवानां देवतमाय कर्त्वमश्रथ्नन्दृऴ्हाव्रदन्त वीऴिता । उद्गा आजदभिनद्ब्रह्मणा वलमगूहत्तमो व्यचक्षयत्स्वः ॥

taddevānāṃ devatamāya kartvamaśrathnandṛḻhāvradanta vīḻitā | udgā ājadabhinadbrahmaṇā valamagūhattamo vyacakṣayatsvaḥ ||

That was the exploit, (performed) for the most divine of the gods, by which the firm (shut gates) were thrown open, the strong (barriers) were relaxed, (by him) who set the cows at liberty; who, by the (force of the) sacred prayer, destroyed Bala who dispersed the darkness and displayed the light.

अश्मास्यमवतं ब्रह्मणस्पतिर्मधुधारमभि यमोजसातृणत् । तमेव विश्वे पपिरे स्वर्दृशो बहु साकं सिसिचुरुत्समुद्रिणम् ॥

aśmāsyamavataṃ brahmaṇaspatirmadhudhāramabhi yamojasātṛṇat | tameva viśve papire svardṛśo bahu sākaṃ sisicurutsamudriṇam ||

That stone-like, solid, down-hanging, water-laden (cloud), which Brahmaṇaspati has with his strength divided, the universal solar rays have drunk up; but they have again shed together the showering and water-spreading (rain).

सना ता का चिद्भुवना भवीत्वा माद्भिः शरद्भिर्दुरो वरन्त वः । अयतन्ता चरतो अन्यदन्यदिद्या चकार वयुना ब्रह्मणस्पतिः ॥

sanā tā kā cidbhuvanā bhavītvā mādbhiḥ śaradbhirduro varanta vaḥ | ayatantā carato anyadanyadidyā cakāra vayunā brahmaṇaspatiḥ ||

For you, (worshipper), the constant and manifold (bounties of Brahmaṇaspati), through months and through years, set open the gates of the future rains, and he has appointed those results of prayer, which the two regions mutually and without effort provide.

अभिनक्षन्तो अभि ये तमानशुर्निधिं पणीनां परमं गुहा हितम् । ते विद्वांसः प्रतिचक्ष्यानृता पुनर्यत उ आयन्तदुदीयुराविशम् ॥

abhinakṣanto abhi ye tamānaśurnidhiṃ paṇīnāṃ paramaṃ guhā hitam | te vidvāṃsaḥ praticakṣyānṛtā punaryata u āyantadudīyurāviśam ||

Those sages, who searching on every side, discovered the precious treasure (of cattle) hidden in the cave of the Paṇis, having seen through the false (illusions of the asura), and again coming (thither) forced an entrance.

ऋतावानः प्रतिचक्ष्यानृता पुनरात आ तस्थुः कवयो महस्पथः । ते बाहुभ्यां धमितमग्निमश्मनि नकिः षो अस्त्यरणो जहुर्हि तम् ॥

ṛtāvānaḥ praticakṣyānṛtā punarāta ā tasthuḥ kavayo mahaspathaḥ | te bāhubhyāṃ dhamitamagnimaśmani nakiḥ ṣo astyaraṇo jahurhi tam ||

Those sages, eminent for truth, having seen through the false (illusions of the asura), again pursued the main road thither, and with their hands cast against the rock the destructive fire, which, till then, was not there.

ऋतज्येन क्षिप्रेण ब्रह्मणस्पतिर्यत्र वष्टि प्र तदश्नोति धन्वना । तस्य साध्वीरिषवो याभिरस्यति नृचक्षसो दृशये कर्णयोनयः ॥

ṛtajyena kṣipreṇa brahmaṇaspatiryatra vaṣṭi pra tadaśnoti dhanvanā | tasya sādhvīriṣavo yābhirasyati nṛcakṣaso dṛśaye karṇayonayaḥ ||

Whatever Brahmaṇaspati aims at with the truth-strung quick-darting bow, that (mark) he surely attains; holy are its arrows with which he shoots (intended) for the eyes of men, and having their abode in the ear.

स संनयः स विनयः पुरोहितः स सुष्टुतः स युधि ब्रह्मणस्पतिः । चाक्ष्मो यद्वाजं भरते मती धनादित्सूर्यस्तपति तप्यतुर्वृथा ॥

sa saṃnayaḥ sa vinayaḥ purohitaḥ sa suṣṭutaḥ sa yudhi brahmaṇaspatiḥ | cākṣmo yadvājaṃ bharate matī dhanāditsūryastapati tapyaturvṛthā ||

He, Brahmaṇaspati, is the aggregator and subjugator (of objects); the family priest (of the gods) and the renowned in battle; the beholder (of all), who bestows food and desired treasures, whence the radiant sun shines without exertion.

विभु प्रभु प्रथमं मेहनावतो बृहस्पतेः सुविदत्राणि राध्या । इमा सातानि वेन्यस्य वाजिनो येन जना उभये भुञ्जते विशः ॥

vibhu prabhu prathamaṃ mehanāvato bṛhaspateḥ suvidatrāṇi rādhyā | imā sātāni venyasya vājino yena janā ubhaye bhuñjate viśaḥ ||

Expansive, vast, and excellent riches, are the attainable (bounties) of Bṛhaspati, the sender of the rain; these are the gifts of the adorable giver of food, whereby both (descriptions of worshippers) entering here enjoy (abundance).

योऽवरे वृजने विश्वथा विभुर्महामु रण्वः शवसा ववक्षिथ । स देवो देवान्प्रति पप्रथे पृथु विश्वेदु ता परिभूर्ब्रह्मणस्पतिः ॥

yo'vare vṛjane viśvathā vibhurmahāmu raṇvaḥ śavasā vavakṣitha | sa devo devānprati paprathe pṛthu viśvedu tā paribhūrbrahmaṇaspatiḥ ||

He, who is all-pervading and delighting, is willing to sustain by his strength the noble, worshipper, as well as one who is in low distress; greatly is that Brahmaṇaspati renowned amongst the gods, and therefore is he verily supreme above all (beings).

विश्वं सत्यं मघवाना युवोरिदापश्चन प्र मिनन्ति व्रतं वाम् । अच्छेन्द्राब्रह्मणस्पती हविर्नोऽन्नं युजेव वाजिना जिगातम् ॥

viśvaṃ satyaṃ maghavānā yuvoridāpaścana pra minanti vrataṃ vām | acchendrābrahmaṇaspatī havirno'nnaṃ yujeva vājinā jigātam ||

All truth, lords of wealth, (Indra and Brahmaṇaspati), is (inherent) in you both; the waters injure not your rites; come to our presence (to receive) our oblations, like a pair of steeds (to receive) their provender.

उताशिष्ठा अनु शृण्वन्ति वह्नयः सभेयो विप्रो भरते मती धना । वीऴुद्वेषा अनु वश ऋणमाददिः स ह वाजी समिथे ब्रह्मणस्पतिः ॥

utāśiṣṭhā anu śṛṇvanti vahnayaḥ sabheyo vipro bharate matī dhanā | vīḻudveṣā anu vaśa ṛṇamādadiḥ sa ha vājī samithe brahmaṇaspatiḥ ||

The very swift horses (of Brahmaṇaspati) listen to (our invocation); the priest of the assembly offers with praise the (sacrificial) wealth; may Brahmaṇaspati, the hater of the oppressor, accept (the payment of) the debt, agreeably to his plural asure; may he be the accepter of the (sacrificial) food presented at this ceremony.

ब्रह्मणस्पतेरभवद्यथावशं सत्यो मन्युर्महि कर्मा करिष्यतः । यो गा उदाजत्स दिवे वि चाभजन्महीव रीतिः शवसासरत्पृथक् ॥

brahmaṇaspaterabhavadyathāvaśaṃ satyo manyurmahi karmā kariṣyataḥ | yo gā udājatsa dive vi cābhajanmahīva rītiḥ śavasāsaratpṛthak ||

The purpose of Brahmaṇaspati, engaging in a great work, has been successful, according to his wish; for he it was who recovered (the stolen) cattle for (the dwellers in) heaven; and distrubuted them; so that of their own power they took different directions, like (the branches of) a mighty river.

ब्रह्मणस्पते सुयमस्य विश्वहा रायः स्याम रथ्यो वयस्वतः । वीरेषु वीराँ उप पृङ्धि नस्त्वं यदीशानो ब्रह्मणा वेषि मे हवम् ॥

brahmaṇaspate suyamasya viśvahā rāyaḥ syāma rathyo vayasvataḥ | vīreṣu vīrā~ upa pṛṅdhi nastvaṃ yadīśāno brahmaṇā veṣi me havam ||

May we, Brahmaṇaspati, be daily in the possession of well-regulated and food-supplying wealth; do you add for us posterity to posterity, since you, who are the ruler (of all) accept my invocation with (offered sacrificial) food.

ब्रह्मणस्पते त्वमस्य यन्ता सूक्तस्य बोधि तनयं च जिन्व । विश्वं तद्भद्रं यदवन्ति देवा बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः ॥

brahmaṇaspate tvamasya yantā sūktasya bodhi tanayaṃ ca jinva | viśvaṃ tadbhadraṃ yadavanti devā bṛhadvadema vidathe suvīrāḥ ||

Brahmaṇaspati, who are the regulator of this (world), understand (the purport of) our hymn, and grant us posterity; for all is prosperous that the gods protect; (and therefore) may we, blessed with excellent descendants, glorify you at this sacrifice.
