[rv-10-98] • 12 श्लोकाः

बृहस्पते प्रति मे देवतामिहि मित्रो वा यद्वरुणो वासि पूषा । आदित्यैर्वा यद्वसुभिर्मरुत्वान्त्स पर्जन्यं शंतनवे वृषाय ॥

bṛhaspate prati me devatāmihi mitro vā yadvaruṇo vāsi pūṣā | ādityairvā yadvasubhirmarutvāntsa parjanyaṃ śaṃtanave vṛṣāya ||

: Go, Bṛhaspati, on my behalf to the gods, whether you are Mitra, or Varuṇa, or Pūṣan, orassociated with the Ādityas, the Vasus, or the Maruts-- do you cause Parjanya to send down rain for Śantanu.

आ देवो दूतो अजिरश्चिकित्वान्त्वद्देवापे अभि मामगच्छत् । प्रतीचीनः प्रति मामा ववृत्स्व दधामि ते द्युमतीं वाचमासन् ॥

ā devo dūto ajiraścikitvāntvaddevāpe abhi māmagacchat | pratīcīnaḥ prati māmā vavṛtsva dadhāmi te dyumatīṃ vācamāsan ||

Let a divine messenger quick and intelligent sent, Devāpi, by you come to me. Come, Bṛhaspati, tome, turning towards me; I have in my mouth a brilliant eulogium for you.

अस्मे धेहि द्युमतीं वाचमासन्बृहस्पते अनमीवामिषिराम् । यया वृष्टिं शंतनवे वनाव दिवो द्रप्सो मधुमाँ आ विवेश ॥

asme dhehi dyumatīṃ vācamāsanbṛhaspate anamīvāmiṣirām | yayā vṛṣṭiṃ śaṃtanave vanāva divo drapso madhumā~ ā viveśa ||

Put, Bṛhaspati, in my mouth a brilliant eulogium, prompt and free from defect, by which we two mayobtain rain from heaven for Śantanu, the sweet drop (sent by you) has entered (our voice).

आ नो द्रप्सा मधुमन्तो विशन्त्विन्द्र देह्यधिरथं सहस्रम् । नि षीद होत्रमृतुथा यजस्व देवान्देवापे हविषा सपर्य ॥

ā no drapsā madhumanto viśantvindra dehyadhirathaṃ sahasram | ni ṣīda hotramṛtuthā yajasva devāndevāpe haviṣā saparya ||

May the sweet drops of rain fall upon us; grant us, Indra, a thousand chariot-loads. Sit down, Devāpi,to your duties as Hotā; in due season sacrifice to the gods, worship them with oblations. functions as Hotā. He has brought down from the upper to the lower ocean the rain waters of heaven.

आर्ष्टिषेणो होत्रमृषिर्निषीदन्देवापिर्देवसुमतिं चिकित्वान् । स उत्तरस्मादधरं समुद्रमपो दिव्या असृजद्वर्ष्या अभि ॥

ārṣṭiṣeṇo hotramṛṣirniṣīdandevāpirdevasumatiṃ cikitvān | sa uttarasmādadharaṃ samudramapo divyā asṛjadvarṣyā abhi ||

Details:

अस्मिन्त्समुद्रे अध्युत्तरस्मिन्नापो देवेभिर्निवृता अतिष्ठन् । ता अद्रवन्नार्ष्टिषेणेन सृष्टा देवापिना प्रेषिता मृक्षिणीषु ॥

asmintsamudre adhyuttarasminnāpo devebhirnivṛtā atiṣṭhan | tā adravannārṣṭiṣeṇena sṛṣṭā devāpinā preṣitā mṛkṣiṇīṣu ||

In this upper ocean the waters stood dammed up by the gods; set free by Devāpi, the son ofṚṣṭiṣeṇa, they were sent forth over the plural ins.

यद्देवापिः शंतनवे पुरोहितो होत्राय वृतः कृपयन्नदीधेत् । देवश्रुतं वृष्टिवनिं रराणो बृहस्पतिर्वाचमस्मा अयच्छत् ॥

yaddevāpiḥ śaṃtanave purohito hotrāya vṛtaḥ kṛpayannadīdhet | devaśrutaṃ vṛṣṭivaniṃ rarāṇo bṛhaspatirvācamasmā ayacchat ||

When Devāpi, the Purohita for Śantanu, engaged in his functions of Hotā, compassionating (him),slicited Bṛhaspati, to whom the gods listen, who begs for rain, (Bṛhaspati) being plural ased gave him a voice.

यं त्वा देवापिः शुशुचानो अग्न आर्ष्टिषेणो मनुष्यः समीधे । विश्वेभिर्देवैरनुमद्यमानः प्र पर्जन्यमीरया वृष्टिमन्तम् ॥

yaṃ tvā devāpiḥ śuśucāno agna ārṣṭiṣeṇo manuṣyaḥ samīdhe | viśvebhirdevairanumadyamānaḥ pra parjanyamīrayā vṛṣṭimantam ||

Agni, whom the mortal Devāpi, the son of Ṛṣṭiseṇa, lighting you, has kindled, do you, beingpropitiated with all the gods, send down the rain- laden cloud.

त्वां पूर्व ऋषयो गीर्भिरायन्त्वामध्वरेषु पुरुहूत विश्वे । सहस्राण्यधिरथान्यस्मे आ नो यज्ञं रोहिदश्वोप याहि ॥

tvāṃ pūrva ṛṣayo gīrbhirāyantvāmadhvareṣu puruhūta viśve | sahasrāṇyadhirathānyasme ā no yajñaṃ rohidaśvopa yāhi ||

You have ancient sages approached, with hymns; you, O invoked of many, all worshippers (address)at sacrifice; (give) us thousands of chariot-loads, come to our sacrifice, lord of red horses.

एतान्यग्ने नवतिर्नव त्वे आहुतान्यधिरथा सहस्रा । तेभिर्वर्धस्व तन्वः शूर पूर्वीर्दिवो नो वृष्टिमिषितो रिरीहि ॥

etānyagne navatirnava tve āhutānyadhirathā sahasrā | tebhirvardhasva tanvaḥ śūra pūrvīrdivo no vṛṣṭimiṣito rirīhi ||

These ninety-and-nine thousands of chariot-lords have been offered, Agni, to you; with them, O hero,nourish your many bodies; and thus solicited sends us rain from heaven.

एतान्यग्ने नवतिं सहस्रा सं प्र यच्छ वृष्ण इन्द्राय भागम् । विद्वान्पथ ऋतुशो देवयानानप्यौलानं दिवि देवेषु धेहि ॥

etānyagne navatiṃ sahasrā saṃ pra yaccha vṛṣṇa indrāya bhāgam | vidvānpatha ṛtuśo devayānānapyaulānaṃ divi deveṣu dhehi ||

Give, Agni, these ninety thousands to the showerer, Indra, as his share; knowing the paths traversedby the gods in due season plural ce the Aulāna (Śantanu), in heaven among the gods.

अग्ने बाधस्व वि मृधो वि दुर्गहापामीवामप रक्षांसि सेध । अस्मात्समुद्राद्बृहतो दिवो नोऽपां भूमानमुप नः सृजेह ॥

agne bādhasva vi mṛdho vi durgahāpāmīvāmapa rakṣāṃsi sedha | asmātsamudrādbṛhato divo no'pāṃ bhūmānamupa naḥ sṛjeha ||

Demolish, Agni, our enemies, demolish their strongholds, drive away disease, drive away therākṣasas from this ocean, from vast heaven send own upon us here abundance of rain.
