सं जागृवद्भिर्जरमाण इध्यते दमे दमूना इषयन्निऴस्पदे । विश्वस्य होता हविषो वरेण्यो विभुर्विभावा सुषखा सखीयते ॥

saṃ jāgṛvadbhirjaramāṇa idhyate dame damūnā iṣayanniḻaspade | viśvasya hotā haviṣo vareṇyo vibhurvibhāvā suṣakhā sakhīyate ||

Details:

स दर्शतश्रीरतिथिर्गृहेगृहे वनेवने शिश्रिये तक्ववीरिव । जनंजनं जन्यो नाति मन्यते विश आ क्षेति विश्यो विशंविशम् ॥

sa darśataśrīratithirgṛhegṛhe vanevane śiśriye takvavīriva | janaṃjanaṃ janyo nāti manyate viśa ā kṣeti viśyo viśaṃviśam ||

Of manifest glory, he resorts as a guest to every house (of his worshippers) to every forest; friendly toman, like one going to all men, he disregards them not; kind to all, he dwells among all men, (he presides ove4r

सुदक्षो दक्षैः क्रतुनासि सुक्रतुरग्ने कविः काव्येनासि विश्ववित् । वसुर्वसूनां क्षयसि त्वमेक इद्द्यावा च यानि पृथिवी च पुष्यतः ॥

sudakṣo dakṣaiḥ kratunāsi sukraturagne kaviḥ kāvyenāsi viśvavit | vasurvasūnāṃ kṣayasi tvameka iddyāvā ca yāni pṛthivī ca puṣyataḥ ||

You, Agni, are vigorous with vigour, you are active with acts (of piety), you are wise with wisdom, knowing all things. You are the dispenser of wealth, you abide alone, you are lord of the treasures of heaven and earth.

प्रजानन्नग्ने तव योनिमृत्वियमिऴायास्पदे घृतवन्तमासदः । आ ते चिकित्र उषसामिवेतयोऽरेपसः सूर्यस्येव रश्मयः ॥

prajānannagne tava yonimṛtviyamiḻāyāspade ghṛtavantamāsadaḥ | ā te cikitra uṣasāmivetayo'repasaḥ sūryasyeva raśmayaḥ ||

Sagacious Agni, you sit at your station suited to the sacrifice and anointed with butter at the foot-markof Iḷā. your quick-moving rays are manifested like those of the dawns, beautiful as those of the sun.

तव श्रियो वर्ष्यस्येव विद्युतश्चित्राश्चिकित्र उषसां न केतवः । यदोषधीरभिसृष्टो वनानि च परि स्वयं चिनुषे अन्नमास्ये ॥

tava śriyo varṣyasyeva vidyutaścitrāścikitra uṣasāṃ na ketavaḥ | yadoṣadhīrabhisṛṣṭo vanāni ca pari svayaṃ cinuṣe annamāsye ||

Your glories, Agni, like the lightnings of the rain-cloud are manifested many-tinted, like themanifestations of the dawn, when quitting the plural nts and the forests, you gather on all sides food for your mouth.

तमोषधीर्दधिरे गर्भमृत्वियं तमापो अग्निं जनयन्त मातरः । तमित्समानं वनिनश्च वीरुधोऽन्तर्वतीश्च सुवते च विश्वहा ॥

tamoṣadhīrdadhire garbhamṛtviyaṃ tamāpo agniṃ janayanta mātaraḥ | tamitsamānaṃ vaninaśca vīrudho'ntarvatīśca suvate ca viśvahā ||

The plural nts bear him as the embryo (conceived) in due season; the maternal waters bring forth Agni;yes, the trees and the pregnant creepers bring him forth daily like themselves.

वातोपधूत इषितो वशाँ अनु तृषु यदन्ना वेविषद्वितिष्ठसे । आ ते यतन्ते रथ्यो यथा पृथक्छर्धांस्यग्ने अजराणि धक्षतः ॥

vātopadhūta iṣito vaśā~ anu tṛṣu yadannā veviṣadvitiṣṭhase | ā te yatante rathyo yathā pṛthakchardhāṃsyagne ajarāṇi dhakṣataḥ ||

When, agitated by the wind and quickly moving through the beloved (trees), you spread aboutdevouring the food, the imperishable energies of you, Agni, the devourer, rush forth like charioteers.

मेधाकारं विदथस्य प्रसाधनमग्निं होतारं परिभूतमं मतिम् । तमिदर्भे हविष्या समानमित्तमिन्महे वृणते नान्यं त्वत् ॥

medhākāraṃ vidathasya prasādhanamagniṃ hotāraṃ paribhūtamaṃ matim | tamidarbhe haviṣyā samānamittaminmahe vṛṇate nānyaṃ tvat ||

(The priest) selects you, (Agni), the giver of intelligence, the accomplisher of the sacrifice, the invokerof the gods, the chief overcomer of foes, the councillor, alike verily at the lesser and at the greater oblation andnone other than you.

त्वामिदत्र वृणते त्वायवो होतारमग्ने विदथेषु वेधसः । यद्देवयन्तो दधति प्रयांसि ते हविष्मन्तो मनवो वृक्तबर्हिषः ॥

tvāmidatra vṛṇate tvāyavo hotāramagne vidatheṣu vedhasaḥ | yaddevayanto dadhati prayāṃsi te haviṣmanto manavo vṛktabarhiṣaḥ ||

The performers of sacred rites, devoted to Agni, to you, select you as the ministrant priest at sacrificesin this world, when the devout worshippers bearing oblations and strewing the clipped sacred grass offer youfood.

तवाग्ने होत्रं तव पोत्रमृत्वियं तव नेष्ट्रं त्वमग्निदृतायतः । तव प्रशास्त्रं त्वमध्वरीयसि ब्रह्मा चासि गृहपतिश्च नो दमे ॥

tavāgne hotraṃ tava potramṛtviyaṃ tava neṣṭraṃ tvamagnidṛtāyataḥ | tava praśāstraṃ tvamadhvarīyasi brahmā cāsi gṛhapatiśca no dame ||

Yours, Agni, is the function of the Hotā, yours the duly-performed function of the Potā, yours thefunction of the Neṣṭā, you are the Agni of the sacrificer, yours is the office of the Praśāstā, you act asAdhvaryu, and you are the Brahmā and the lord of the mansion in our abode.

यस्तुभ्यमग्ने अमृताय मर्त्यः समिधा दाशदुत वा हविष्कृति । तस्य होता भवसि यासि दूत्यमुप ब्रूषे यजस्यध्वरीयसि ॥

yastubhyamagne amṛtāya martyaḥ samidhā dāśaduta vā haviṣkṛti | tasya hotā bhavasi yāsi dūtyamupa brūṣe yajasyadhvarīyasi ||

The mortal, Agni, who presents to you, the immortal, fuel at the offering of the oblation-- you are hisHotā, you go on his errant (to the gods), you direct (the ceremonial), you offer the sacrifice, you act as theofficiating priest.

इमा अस्मै मतयो वाचो अस्मदाँ ऋचो गिरः सुष्टुतयः समग्मत । वसूयवो वसवे जातवेदसे वृद्धासु चिद्वर्धनो यासु चाकनत् ॥

imā asmai matayo vāco asmadā~ ṛco giraḥ suṣṭutayaḥ samagmata | vasūyavo vasave jātavedase vṛddhāsu cidvardhano yāsu cākanat ||

May these laudatory words, these eulogistic verses, these voices (proceeding) from us, reach him thegiver of wealth, Jātavedas; these wealth- desiring (words) in which when they are perfected, the perfecterdelights.

इमां प्रत्नाय सुष्टुतिं नवीयसीं वोचेयमस्मा उशते शृणोतु नः । भूया अन्तरा हृद्यस्य निस्पृशे जायेव पत्य उशती सुवासाः ॥

imāṃ pratnāya suṣṭutiṃ navīyasīṃ voceyamasmā uśate śṛṇotu naḥ | bhūyā antarā hṛdyasya nispṛśe jāyeva patya uśatī suvāsāḥ ||

I will address this new laudatory hymn to the ancient Agni, who is gratified (by praise). May he hear uṣMay I be in the centre of his heart, to touch it, like a loving well-attired wife (in the heart) of her husband.

यस्मिन्नश्वास ऋषभास उक्षणो वशा मेषा अवसृष्टास आहुताः । कीलालपे सोमपृष्ठाय वेधसे हृदा मतिं जनये चारुमग्नये ॥

yasminnaśvāsa ṛṣabhāsa ukṣaṇo vaśā meṣā avasṛṣṭāsa āhutāḥ | kīlālape somapṛṣṭhāya vedhase hṛdā matiṃ janaye cārumagnaye ||

I offer graceful praise with all my heart to Agni, the drinker of water, whose back is sprinkled withSoma, the ordainer (of the rite), to whom vigorous horses and bulls and barren cows and sheep are consignedas burnt offerings.

अहाव्यग्ने हविरास्ये ते स्रुचीव घृतं चम्वीव सोमः । वाजसनिं रयिमस्मे सुवीरं प्रशस्तं धेहि यशसं बृहन्तम् ॥

ahāvyagne havirāsye te srucīva ghṛtaṃ camvīva somaḥ | vājasaniṃ rayimasme suvīraṃ praśastaṃ dhehi yaśasaṃ bṛhantam ||

The oblation has been poured, Agni, into your mouth, like butter into the ladle, like Soma into thespoon. Bestow upon us riches conferring food, (comprehending) male progeny, excellent renowned andabundant.
