[rv-10-69] • 12 श्लोकाः

भद्रा अग्नेर्वध्र्यश्वस्य संदृशो वामी प्रणीतिः सुरणा उपेतयः । यदीं सुमित्रा विशो अग्र इन्धते घृतेनाहुतो जरते दविद्युतत् ॥

bhadrā agnervadhryaśvasya saṃdṛśo vāmī praṇītiḥ suraṇā upetayaḥ | yadīṃ sumitrā viśo agra indhate ghṛtenāhuto jarate davidyutat ||

May Agni's regards be benevolent to Vadhryaśva; may his guidance be auspicious, his approaches(to the sacrifice) favourable; when the Sumitra people first kindled Agni, then fed with butter and brilliantly blazinghe is glorified.

घृतमग्नेर्वध्र्यश्वस्य वर्धनं घृतमन्नं घृतम्वस्य मेदनम् । घृतेनाहुत उर्विया वि पप्रथे सूर्य इव रोचते सर्पिरासुतिः ॥

ghṛtamagnervadhryaśvasya vardhanaṃ ghṛtamannaṃ ghṛtamvasya medanam | ghṛtenāhuta urviyā vi paprathe sūrya iva rocate sarpirāsutiḥ ||

May ghī be the augmenter of the Agni of Vadhryaśva; may ghī be his food; may ghī be hisnutriment; sacrified to with ghī he expands exceedingly; he shines like the sun, when the clarified butter ispoured out for him.

यत्ते मनुर्यदनीकं सुमित्रः समीधे अग्ने तदिदं नवीयः । स रेवच्छोच स गिरो जुषस्व स वाजं दर्षि स इह श्रवो धाः ॥

yatte manuryadanīkaṃ sumitraḥ samīdhe agne tadidaṃ navīyaḥ | sa revacchoca sa giro juṣasva sa vājaṃ darṣi sa iha śravo dhāḥ ||

May that your army of flame, Agni, which Manu, which Sumitra has kindled, be the newest; do youshine wealthily; do you graciously accept our praises; do you destroy the might (of our foes), do you grant usabundance.

यं त्वा पूर्वमीऴितो वध्र्यश्वः समीधे अग्ने स इदं जुषस्व । स नः स्तिपा उत भवा तनूपा दात्रं रक्षस्व यदिदं ते अस्मे ॥

yaṃ tvā pūrvamīḻito vadhryaśvaḥ samīdhe agne sa idaṃ juṣasva | sa naḥ stipā uta bhavā tanūpā dātraṃ rakṣasva yadidaṃ te asme ||

Do you, Agni, whom Vadhryaśva propitiating you formerly kindled, accept this; be the proector of oursacrifices, be the protector of our bodies; preserve this wealth which has been given to us by you.

भवा द्युम्नी वाध्र्यश्वोत गोपा मा त्वा तारीदभिमातिर्जनानाम् । शूर इव धृष्णुश्च्यवनः सुमित्रः प्र नु वोचं वाध्र्यश्वस्य नाम ॥

bhavā dyumnī vādhryaśvota gopā mā tvā tārīdabhimātirjanānām | śūra iva dhṛṣṇuścyavanaḥ sumitraḥ pra nu vocaṃ vādhryaśvasya nāma ||

Kinsman of Vadhryaśva, be the possessor of food and our protector; let no one assail you, (for youare) the overcomer of men; like a resolute warrior (you are) the overthrower (of enemies); I, Sumitra, celebratethe names of the kinsmen of Vadhyaśva.

समज्र्या पर्वत्या वसूनि दासा वृत्राण्यार्या जिगेथ । शूर इव धृष्णुश्च्यवनो जनानां त्वमग्ने पृतनायूँरभि ष्याः ॥

samajryā parvatyā vasūni dāsā vṛtrāṇyāryā jigetha | śūra iva dhṛṣṇuścyavano janānāṃ tvamagne pṛtanāyū~rabhi ṣyāḥ ||

You have gained mountain-treasures beneficial to men, (you have defeated the hostilities) of strongmen, Dāsas and Vṛtras, like a resolute warrior, do you, Agni, the overthrower (of enemies), overcome thosewho are desirous of battle.

दीर्घतन्तुर्बृहदुक्षायमग्निः सहस्रस्तरीः शतनीथ ऋभ्वा । द्युमान्द्युमत्सु नृभिर्मृज्यमानः सुमित्रेषु दीदयो देवयत्सु ॥

dīrghatanturbṛhadukṣāyamagniḥ sahasrastarīḥ śatanītha ṛbhvā | dyumāndyumatsu nṛbhirmṛjyamānaḥ sumitreṣu dīdayo devayatsu ||

This Agni to whom a long series (of sacrifices has been addressed), who is bright with many rays,covering thousands (in the form of ghī), the leader of hundreds (of burnt offerings), the mighty one, brilliantamong the brilliant, (is) being glorified by the priests; shine (Agni) upon the devout Sumitras.

त्वे धेनुः सुदुघा जातवेदोऽसश्चतेव समना सबर्धुक् । त्वं नृभिर्दक्षिणावद्भिरग्ने सुमित्रेभिरिध्यसे देवयद्भिः ॥

tve dhenuḥ sudughā jātavedo'saścateva samanā sabardhuk | tvaṃ nṛbhirdakṣiṇāvadbhiragne sumitrebhiridhyase devayadbhiḥ ||

In you, Jātavedas, is the cow easy to be milked, yielding ambrosia as it were inexhaustibly in battle,you are kindled, Agni, by the devout Sumitras who are entitled to the sacrificial donation.

देवाश्चित्ते अमृता जातवेदो महिमानं वाध्र्यश्व प्र वोचन् । यत्सम्पृच्छं मानुषीर्विश आयन्त्वं नृभिरजयस्त्वावृधेभिः ॥

devāścitte amṛtā jātavedo mahimānaṃ vādhryaśva pra vocan | yatsampṛcchaṃ mānuṣīrviśa āyantvaṃ nṛbhirajayastvāvṛdhebhiḥ ||

The immortal gods have proclaimed your greatness. Jātavedas, Vadhryaśva (Agni); when humanbeings, came to inquire (who would slay the asuras), then you with (the gods), the leaders of all, fostered by youdid overcome (those who impeded the ceremony).

पितेव पुत्रमबिभरुपस्थे त्वामग्ने वध्र्यश्वः सपर्यन् । जुषाणो अस्य समिधं यविष्ठोत पूर्वाँ अवनोर्व्राधतश्चित् ॥

piteva putramabibharupasthe tvāmagne vadhryaśvaḥ saparyan | juṣāṇo asya samidhaṃ yaviṣṭhota pūrvā~ avanorvrādhataścit ||

Vadhryaśva, honouring you, Agni, plural ced you upon the altar as a father (plural ces) his son (upon hislap); plural ased with his fuel, youngest (of the gods), you did slay the ancient obstructers of the rite.

शश्वदग्निर्वध्र्यश्वस्य शत्रून्नृभिर्जिगाय सुतसोमवद्भिः । समनं चिददहश्चित्रभानोऽव व्राधन्तमभिनद्वृधश्चित् ॥

śaśvadagnirvadhryaśvasya śatrūnnṛbhirjigāya sutasomavadbhiḥ | samanaṃ cidadahaścitrabhāno'va vrādhantamabhinadvṛdhaścit ||

Agni by means of the priests of Vadhryaśva pouring out libations always conquers his foes; you(Agni) shining with varied splendour, have consumed the battle; (your praiser) self-fostered has destroyed hispowerful (assailant).

अयमग्निर्वध्र्यश्वस्य वृत्रहा सनकात्प्रेद्धो नमसोपवाक्यः । स नो अजामीँरुत वा विजामीनभि तिष्ठ शर्धतो वाध्र्यश्व ॥

ayamagnirvadhryaśvasya vṛtrahā sanakātpreddho namasopavākyaḥ | sa no ajāmī~ruta vā vijāmīnabhi tiṣṭha śardhato vādhryaśva ||

From a long period has this Agni the slayer of foes been kindled (by the oblation) of Vadhryaśva; (heis) to be addressed with reverence; do you, (Agni, kindled in the) family of Vadhryaśva, overcome our enemies,both those who have no kinsmen and those who have many kinsmen.
