दिवस्परि प्रथमं जज्ञे अग्निरस्मद्द्वितीयं परि जातवेदाः । तृतीयमप्सु नृमणा अजस्रमिन्धान एनं जरते स्वाधीः ॥

divaspari prathamaṃ jajñe agnirasmaddvitīyaṃ pari jātavedāḥ | tṛtīyamapsu nṛmaṇā ajasramindhāna enaṃ jarate svādhīḥ ||

Agni was first born above the sky; as Ja-tavedas he was born the second time among us; the friend ofman, he was born the third time in the watters; the sage kindlin him eternally praises him.

विद्मा ते अग्ने त्रेधा त्रयाणि विद्मा ते धाम विभृता पुरुत्रा । विद्मा ते नाम परमं गुहा यद्विद्मा तमुत्सं यत आजगन्थ ॥

vidmā te agne tredhā trayāṇi vidmā te dhāma vibhṛtā purutrā | vidmā te nāma paramaṃ guhā yadvidmā tamutsaṃ yata ājagantha ||

We recognize your threefold station, Agni, and your three (forms); we recognize the many stationsoccupied by you; we know what your supreme secret appellation (is); we know the source, whence you haveproceeded.

समुद्रे त्वा नृमणा अप्स्वन्तर्नृचक्षा ईधे दिवो अग्न ऊधन् । तृतीये त्वा रजसि तस्थिवांसमपामुपस्थे महिषा अवर्धन् ॥

samudre tvā nṛmaṇā apsvantarnṛcakṣā īdhe divo agna ūdhan | tṛtīye tvā rajasi tasthivāṃsamapāmupasthe mahiṣā avardhan ||

He who is well disposed towards men illumines the Agni in the ocean (as submarine fire), in the midstof the waters; the beholder of men (illumines) you in the centre of the sky; the mighty (maruts) magnify youabiding in the third region (the firmament), on the lap of the waters.

अक्रन्ददग्निः स्तनयन्निव द्यौः क्षामा रेरिहद्वीरुधः समञ्जन् । सद्यो जज्ञानो वि हीमिद्धो अख्यदा रोदसी भानुना भात्यन्तः ॥

akrandadagniḥ stanayanniva dyauḥ kṣāmā rerihadvīrudhaḥ samañjan | sadyo jajñāno vi hīmiddho akhyadā rodasī bhānunā bhātyantaḥ ||

Agni cries aloud like the thundering heaven; he licks the earth burning the plural nts; as soon asgenerated, he contemplates this (conflagration); when kindled he blazes with his (own) radiance between heavenand earth.

श्रीणामुदारो धरुणो रयीणां मनीषाणां प्रार्पणः सोमगोपाः । वसुः सूनुः सहसो अप्सु राजा वि भात्यग्र उषसामिधानः ॥

śrīṇāmudāro dharuṇo rayīṇāṃ manīṣāṇāṃ prārpaṇaḥ somagopāḥ | vasuḥ sūnuḥ sahaso apsu rājā vi bhātyagra uṣasāmidhānaḥ ||

Liberal, exciter of splendours, depositary of riches, granter of desires, preserver of the Soma, theinhabiter (of the world), the son of strength, (plural ced) in the waters, the king (Agni) blazes, kindled at thecommencement of dawn.

विश्वस्य केतुर्भुवनस्य गर्भ आ रोदसी अपृणाज्जायमानः । वीऴुं चिदद्रिमभिनत्परायञ्जना यदग्निमयजन्त पञ्च ॥

viśvasya keturbhuvanasya garbha ā rodasī apṛṇājjāyamānaḥ | vīḻuṃ cidadrimabhinatparāyañjanā yadagnimayajanta pañca ||

The manifester of all, the germ of the world, Agni, as soon as born fills heaven and earth (with light);he fractures as he advances the solid cloud, for which the classes of men praise him.

उशिक्पावको अरतिः सुमेधा मर्तेष्वग्निरमृतो नि धायि । इयर्ति धूममरुषं भरिभ्रदुच्छुक्रेण शोचिषा द्यामिनक्षन् ॥

uśikpāvako aratiḥ sumedhā marteṣvagniramṛto ni dhāyi | iyarti dhūmamaruṣaṃ bharibhraducchukreṇa śociṣā dyāminakṣan ||

Desiring (oblations), purifying, moving quickly, sagacious, immortal, Agni has been stationed amongmortals; he sends forth the smoke, and goes wearing a radiant (form), and percading the heaven with brilliantlustre.

दृशानो रुक्म उर्विया व्यद्यौद्दुर्मर्षमायुः श्रिये रुचानः । अग्निरमृतो अभवद्वयोभिर्यदेनं द्यौर्जनयत्सुरेताः ॥

dṛśāno rukma urviyā vyadyauddurmarṣamāyuḥ śriye rucānaḥ | agniramṛto abhavadvayobhiryadenaṃ dyaurjanayatsuretāḥ ||

Conspicuous, glorious, Agni shines with great splendour, moving everywhere, and blazingunsurpassingly with glory; Agni became immortal through the food (of sacrifice) when the prolific heavenengendered him.

यस्ते अद्य कृणवद्भद्रशोचेऽपूपं देव घृतवन्तमग्ने । प्र तं नय प्रतरं वस्यो अच्छाभि सुम्नं देवभक्तं यविष्ठ ॥

yaste adya kṛṇavadbhadraśoce'pūpaṃ deva ghṛtavantamagne | pra taṃ naya prataraṃ vasyo acchābhi sumnaṃ devabhaktaṃ yaviṣṭha ||

Auspiciously radiant and divine Agni, youngest (of the gods), grant ample wealth to the eminent(worshipper), who presents to you today cakes dressed with butter, and confer happiness upon one devoted tothe gods.

आ तं भज सौश्रवसेष्वग्न उक्थौक्थ आ भज शस्यमाने । प्रियः सूर्ये प्रियो अग्ना भवात्युज्जातेन भिनददुज्जनित्वैः ॥

ā taṃ bhaja sauśravaseṣvagna ukthauktha ā bhaja śasyamāne | priyaḥ sūrye priyo agnā bhavātyujjātena bhinadadujjanitvaiḥ ||

Prosper the worshipper, Agni, when beautiful sacrificial viands (are being offered), when sacredpraises are being recited (by him). May he be dear to Sūrya, dear to Agni; may he by a son born, or sons to beborn, overcome (his foes).

त्वामग्ने यजमाना अनु द्यून्विश्वा वसु दधिरे वार्याणि । त्वया सह द्रविणमिच्छमाना व्रजं गोमन्तमुशिजो वि वव्रुः ॥

tvāmagne yajamānā anu dyūnviśvā vasu dadhire vāryāṇi | tvayā saha draviṇamicchamānā vrajaṃ gomantamuśijo vi vavruḥ ||

To you, Agni, the worshippers offer daily all desirable treasures; (abiding) with you, desirous of wealth,the sages have set open the pasturage frequented by cattle.

अस्ताव्यग्निर्नरां सुशेवो वैश्वानर ऋषिभिः सोमगोपाः । अद्वेषे द्यावापृथिवी हुवेम देवा धत्त रयिमस्मे सुवीरम् ॥

astāvyagnirnarāṃ suśevo vaiśvānara ṛṣibhiḥ somagopāḥ | adveṣe dyāvāpṛthivī huvema devā dhatta rayimasme suvīram ||
