[rv-10-16] • 14 श्लोकाः

मैनमग्ने वि दहो माभि शोचो मास्य त्वचं चिक्षिपो मा शरीरम् । यदा शृतं कृणवो जातवेदोऽथेमेनं प्र हिणुतात्पितृभ्यः ॥

mainamagne vi daho mābhi śoco māsya tvacaṃ cikṣipo mā śarīram | yadā śṛtaṃ kṛṇavo jātavedo'themenaṃ pra hiṇutātpitṛbhyaḥ ||

Agni, consume him not entirely; afflict him not; scatter not (here and there) his skin nor his body; whenJātavedas, you have rendered him mature, then send him to the Pitṛs.

शृतं यदा करसि जातवेदोऽथेमेनं परि दत्तात्पितृभ्यः । यदा गच्छात्यसुनीतिमेतामथा देवानां वशनीर्भवाति ॥

śṛtaṃ yadā karasi jātavedo'themenaṃ pari dattātpitṛbhyaḥ | yadā gacchātyasunītimetāmathā devānāṃ vaśanīrbhavāti ||

When you have rendered him mature, then give him up, Jātavedas, to the Pitṛs; when he proceedsto that world of spirits, then he becomes subject to the will of the gods.

सूर्यं चक्षुर्गच्छतु वातमात्मा द्यां च गच्छ पृथिवीं च धर्मणा । अपो वा गच्छ यदि तत्र ते हितमोषधीषु प्रति तिष्ठा शरीरैः ॥

sūryaṃ cakṣurgacchatu vātamātmā dyāṃ ca gaccha pṛthivīṃ ca dharmaṇā | apo vā gaccha yadi tatra te hitamoṣadhīṣu prati tiṣṭhā śarīraiḥ ||

Let the eye repair to the sun; the breath to the wind; go you to the heaven or to the earth, according toyour merit; or go to the waters it it suits you (to be) there, or abide with your members in the plural nts.

अजो भागस्तपसा तं तपस्व तं ते शोचिस्तपतु तं ते अर्चिः । यास्ते शिवास्तन्वो जातवेदस्ताभिर्वहैनं सुकृतामु लोकम् ॥

ajo bhāgastapasā taṃ tapasva taṃ te śocistapatu taṃ te arciḥ | yāste śivāstanvo jātavedastābhirvahainaṃ sukṛtāmu lokam ||

The unborn portion; burn that, Agni, with your heat; let your flame, your splendour, consume it; withthose glorious members which you have given him, Jātavedas, bear him to the world (of the virtuous).

अव सृज पुनरग्ने पितृभ्यो यस्त आहुतश्चरति स्वधाभिः । आयुर्वसान उप वेतु शेषः सं गच्छतां तन्वा जातवेदः ॥

ava sṛja punaragne pitṛbhyo yasta āhutaścarati svadhābhiḥ | āyurvasāna upa vetu śeṣaḥ saṃ gacchatāṃ tanvā jātavedaḥ ||

Dismiss again to the Pitṛs, Agni, him who offered on you, comes with the svadhās; putting on(celestial) life, let the remains (of bodily life) depart; let him, Jātavedas, be associated with a body.

यत्ते कृष्णः शकुन आतुतोद पिपीलः सर्प उत वा श्वापदः । अग्निष्टद्विश्वादगदं कृणोतु सोमश्च यो ब्राह्मणाँ आविवेश ॥

yatte kṛṣṇaḥ śakuna ātutoda pipīlaḥ sarpa uta vā śvāpadaḥ | agniṣṭadviśvādagadaṃ kṛṇotu somaśca yo brāhmaṇā~ āviveśa ||

Should the black crow, the ant, the snake, the wild beast, harm (a limb) of you, may Agni theall-devourer, and the Soma that has pervaded the brāhmaṇas, make it whole.

अग्नेर्वर्म परि गोभिर्व्ययस्व सं प्रोर्णुष्व पीवसा मेदसा च । नेत्त्वा धृष्णुर्हरसा जर्हृषाणो दधृग्विधक्ष्यन्पर्यङ्खयाते ॥

agnervarma pari gobhirvyayasva saṃ prorṇuṣva pīvasā medasā ca | nettvā dhṛṣṇurharasā jarhṛṣāṇo dadhṛgvidhakṣyanparyaṅkhayāte ||

Enclose the mail of Agni with the (hide of the) cow; cover it with the fat and marrow; then will not(Agni), bold, exulting in his fierce heat, proud, embrace you roundabout to consume you (to ashes).

इममग्ने चमसं मा वि जिह्वरः प्रियो देवानामुत सोम्यानाम् । एष यश्चमसो देवपानस्तस्मिन्देवा अमृता मादयन्ते ॥

imamagne camasaṃ mā vi jihvaraḥ priyo devānāmuta somyānām | eṣa yaścamaso devapānastasmindevā amṛtā mādayante ||

Agni, shake not this ladle, for it is dear to the gods and to the (Pitṛs) who are worthy of the Soma; thiswhich is the drinking ladle of the ogds, in this immortal gods delight.

क्रव्यादमग्निं प्र हिणोमि दूरं यमराज्ञो गच्छतु रिप्रवाहः । इहैवायमितरो जातवेदा देवेभ्यो हव्यं वहतु प्रजानन् ॥

kravyādamagniṃ pra hiṇomi dūraṃ yamarājño gacchatu ripravāhaḥ | ihaivāyamitaro jātavedā devebhyo havyaṃ vahatu prajānan ||

I send the flesh-devouring Agni to a distance; let him bearing away sin repair to (the realm of) kingYama; but let this other Jātavedas who is known (by all) convey the oblation to the gods.

यो अग्निः क्रव्यात्प्रविवेश वो गृहमिमं पश्यन्नितरं जातवेदसम् । तं हरामि पितृयज्ञाय देवं स घर्ममिन्वात्परमे सधस्थे ॥

yo agniḥ kravyātpraviveśa vo gṛhamimaṃ paśyannitaraṃ jātavedasam | taṃ harāmi pitṛyajñāya devaṃ sa gharmaminvātparame sadhasthe ||

The flesh-devouring deity Agni, who has entered your dwelling, I turn him out, for the worship of thePitṛs, upon beholding this other (Agni) Jātavedas; let him celebrate the sacrifice (to the Pitṛs) in the mostexcellent assembly.

यो अग्निः क्रव्यवाहनः पितॄन्यक्षदृतावृधः । प्रेदु हव्यानि वोचति देवेभ्यश्च पितृभ्य आ ॥

yo agniḥ kravyavāhanaḥ pitṝnyakṣadṛtāvṛdhaḥ | predu havyāni vocati devebhyaśca pitṛbhya ā ||

Let Agni the bearer of the Kavya worship the Pitṛs, who are magnified by truth, let him declare whichare the offerings to the gods, which to the Pitṛs.

उशन्तस्त्वा नि धीमह्युशन्तः समिधीमहि । उशन्नुशत आ वह पितॄन्हविषे अत्तवे ॥

uśantastvā ni dhīmahyuśantaḥ samidhīmahi | uśannuśata ā vaha pitṝnhaviṣe attave ||

Longing we set you down; longing we kindle you; do you longing bring the longing Pitṛs to eat of the(sacrificial) viands.

यं त्वमग्ने समदहस्तमु निर्वापया पुनः । कियाम्ब्वत्र रोहतु पाकदूर्वा व्यल्कशा ॥

yaṃ tvamagne samadahastamu nirvāpayā punaḥ | kiyāmbvatra rohatu pākadūrvā vyalkaśā ||

Cool again, Agni, the spot which you have burned, there let the water- lily grow, and the ripe Durvawith its many stalks.

शीतिके शीतिकावति ह्लादिके ह्लादिकावति । मण्डूक्या सु सं गम इमं स्वग्निं हर्षय ॥

śītike śītikāvati hlādike hlādikāvati | maṇḍūkyā su saṃ gama imaṃ svagniṃ harṣaya ||

(Oh earth), cool and filled with cool (herbs), gladsome and filled with gladsome (trees), be throngedwith feminine le frogs and give joy to this Agni.
