[rv-1-96] • 9 श्लोकाः

स प्रत्नथा सहसा जायमानः सद्यः काव्यानि बऴधत्त विश्वा । आपश्च मित्रं धिषणा च साधन्देवा अग्निं धारयन्द्रविणोदाम् ॥

sa pratnathā sahasā jāyamānaḥ sadyaḥ kāvyāni baḻadhatta viśvā | āpaśca mitraṃ dhiṣaṇā ca sādhandevā agniṃ dhārayandraviṇodām ||

Engendered by force, Agni verily appropriates, as soon as born, the offerings of the sages; the waters and voice make him their friend, and the gods retain him as the giver of (sacrificial) wealth.

स पूर्वया निविदा कव्यतायोरिमाः प्रजा अजनयन्मनूनाम् । विवस्वता चक्षसा द्यामपश्च देवा अग्निं धारयन्द्रविणोदाम् ॥

sa pūrvayā nividā kavyatāyorimāḥ prajā ajanayanmanūnām | vivasvatā cakṣasā dyāmapaśca devā agniṃ dhārayandraviṇodām ||

(Propitiated) by the primitive laudatory hymn of Āyu, he created the progeny of Manus, and pervades, with his all-investing splendour, the heavens and the firmament; the gods retain Agni as the giver of (sacrificial) wealth.

तमीऴत प्रथमं यज्ञसाधं विश आरीराहुतमृञ्जसानम् । ऊर्जः पुत्रं भरतं सृप्रदानुं देवा अग्निं धारयन्द्रविणोदाम् ॥

tamīḻata prathamaṃ yajñasādhaṃ viśa ārīrāhutamṛñjasānam | ūrjaḥ putraṃ bharataṃ sṛpradānuṃ devā agniṃ dhārayandraviṇodām ||

Approachinghim,let all men adore Agni, the chief (of the gods), the accomplisher of sacrifices, who is gratified by oblations and propitiated by praises--the offspring of food, the sustainer of (all men), the giver of continual gifts; the gods retain Agni as the giver of (sacrificial) wealth.

स मातरिश्वा पुरुवारपुष्टिर्विदद्गातुं तनयाय स्वर्वित् । विशां गोपा जनिता रोदस्योर्देवा अग्निं धारयन्द्रविणोदाम् ॥

sa mātariśvā puruvārapuṣṭirvidadgātuṃ tanayāya svarvit | viśāṃ gopā janitā rodasyordevā agniṃ dhārayandraviṇodām ||

May Agni, the dweller in the firmament, the nourisher with abundant benefits, the bestower of svarga, the protector of mankind, the progenitor of heaven and earth, instrumental uct my sons in the right way; the gods retain Agni as the giver of (sacrificial) wealth.

नक्तोषासा वर्णमामेम्याने धापयेते शिशुमेकं समीची । द्यावाक्षामा रुक्मो अन्तर्वि भाति देवा अग्निं धारयन्द्रविणोदाम् ॥

naktoṣāsā varṇamāmemyāne dhāpayete śiśumekaṃ samīcī | dyāvākṣāmā rukmo antarvi bhāti devā agniṃ dhārayandraviṇodām ||

The night and the day, mutually effacing each other's comlexion, give nourishment combined together, to one infant, who, radiant, shines between earth and heaven the gods retain Agni as the giver of (sacrificial) wealth.

रायो बुध्नः संगमनो वसूनां यज्ञस्य केतुर्मन्मसाधनो वेः । अमृतत्वं रक्षमाणास एनं देवा अग्निं धारयन्द्रविणोदाम् ॥

rāyo budhnaḥ saṃgamano vasūnāṃ yajñasya keturmanmasādhano veḥ | amṛtatvaṃ rakṣamāṇāsa enaṃ devā agniṃ dhārayandraviṇodām ||

The source of opulence, the bestower of riches, the director of the sacrifice, the accomplisher of the desires (of the man) who has recourse to him; him the gods, preserving their immortality, retain as the giver of (sacrificial) wealth.

नू च पुरा च सदनं रयीणां जातस्य च जायमानस्य च क्षाम् । सतश्च गोपां भवतश्च भूरेर्देवा अग्निं धारयन्द्रविणोदाम् ॥

nū ca purā ca sadanaṃ rayīṇāṃ jātasya ca jāyamānasya ca kṣām | sataśca gopāṃ bhavataśca bhūrerdevā agniṃ dhārayandraviṇodām ||

The gods retain Agni as the giver of (sacrificial) wealth, who now is, and heretofore has been, the abode of riches, the receptacle of all that has been, and all that will be, born, and the preserver of all (that) exists, (as well as of all) that are coming into existence.

द्रविणोदा द्रविणसस्तुरस्य द्रविणोदाः सनरस्य प्र यंसत् । द्रविणोदा वीरवतीमिषं नो द्रविणोदा रासते दीर्घमायुः ॥

draviṇodā draviṇasasturasya draviṇodāḥ sanarasya pra yaṃsat | draviṇodā vīravatīmiṣaṃ no draviṇodā rāsate dīrghamāyuḥ ||

May Draviṇodā grant us (a portion) of moveable wealth; may Draviṇodā grant us (a portion) of that which is stationary; may Draviṇodā give us food attended byprogeny; may Draviṇodā bestow upon us long life.

एवा नो अग्ने समिधा वृधानो रेवत्पावक श्रवसे वि भाहि । तन्नो मित्रो वरुणो मामहन्तामदितिः सिन्धुः पृथिवी उत द्यौः ॥

evā no agne samidhā vṛdhāno revatpāvaka śravase vi bhāhi | tanno mitro varuṇo māmahantāmaditiḥ sindhuḥ pṛthivī uta dyauḥ ||

Thus, Agni, who are the purifier gowing with the fuel (we have supplied), blaze for the sake of securing food to us, who are possessed of wealth and may Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi--ocean, earth, and heaven, preserve it to us.
