इमं स्तोममर्हते जातवेदसे रथमिव सं महेमा मनीषया । भद्रा हि नः प्रमतिरस्य संसद्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

imaṃ stomamarhate jātavedase rathamiva saṃ mahemā manīṣayā | bhadrā hi naḥ pramatirasya saṃsadyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

To him who is worthy of praise, and all-knowing, we construct, with our minds, this hymn, as (a workman makes) a car; happy is our understanding when engaged in his adoration; let us not suffer injury, Agni, through your friendship.

यस्मै त्वमायजसे स साधत्यनर्वा क्षेति दधते सुवीर्यम् । स तूताव नैनमश्नोत्यंहतिरग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

yasmai tvamāyajase sa sādhatyanarvā kṣeti dadhate suvīryam | sa tūtāva nainamaśnotyaṃhatiragne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

He, for whom you sacrifice, accomplishes (his objects), abides free from aggression, and enjoys (wealth, the source of) strength; he prospers, and poverty never approaches him; let us not suffer injury, Agni, through your friendship.

शकेम त्वा समिधं साधया धियस्त्वे देवा हविरदन्त्याहुतम् । त्वमादित्याँ आ वह तान्ह्युश्मस्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

śakema tvā samidhaṃ sādhayā dhiyastve devā haviradantyāhutam | tvamādityā~ ā vaha tānhyuśmasyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

May we be able to kindle you; perfect the rite, for through you the gods partake of the offered oblations; bring hither the Ādityas, for we love them; let us not suffer injury, Agni, through your friendship.

भरामेध्मं कृणवामा हवींषि ते चितयन्तः पर्वणापर्वणा वयम् । जीवातवे प्रतरं साधया धियोऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

bharāmedhmaṃ kṛṇavāmā havīṃṣi te citayantaḥ parvaṇāparvaṇā vayam | jīvātave prataraṃ sādhayā dhiyo'gne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

We bring fuel, we offer oblations, reminding you of the successive seasons (of worship); do you thoroughly complete the rite, in order to prolong our lives; let us not suffer injury, Agni, through your friendship.

विशां गोपा अस्य चरन्ति जन्तवो द्विपच्च यदुत चतुष्पदक्तुभिः । चित्रः प्रकेत उषसो महाँ अस्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

viśāṃ gopā asya caranti jantavo dvipacca yaduta catuṣpadaktubhiḥ | citraḥ praketa uṣaso mahā~ asyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

His genitive al (flames), the preservers of mankind, spread around, and both bipeds and quadrupeds are enlivened by his rays; shining with various lustre, and illuminating (the world by night), you are superior to the dawn; let us not, Agni, suffer injury through your friendship.

त्वमध्वर्युरुत होतासि पूर्व्यः प्रशास्ता पोता जनुषा पुरोहितः । विश्वा विद्वाँ आर्त्विज्या धीर पुष्यस्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

tvamadhvaryuruta hotāsi pūrvyaḥ praśāstā potā januṣā purohitaḥ | viśvā vidvā~ ārtvijyā dhīra puṣyasyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

You are the sacrificing or the invoking priest, you are the principal (presenter of the offering), the director (of the ceremonies), their performer, or by birth the family priest; thus conversant with all the priestly functions, you perform perfectly the rite; let us not, Agni, suffer injury through your friendship.

यो विश्वतः सुप्रतीकः सदृङ्ङसि दूरे चित्सन्तऴिदिवाति रोचसे । रात्र्याश्चिदन्धो अति देव पश्यस्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

yo viśvataḥ supratīkaḥ sadṛṅṅasi dūre citsantaḻidivāti rocase | rātryāścidandho ati deva paśyasyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

You are of graceful form, and alike on every side, and, although remote, shine as if nigh; you see, divine Agni, beyond the darkness of night; let us not, Agni suffer injury through your friendship.

पूर्वो देवा भवतु सुन्वतो रथोऽस्माकं शंसो अभ्यस्तु दूढ्यः । तदा जानीतोत पुष्यता वचोऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

pūrvo devā bhavatu sunvato ratho'smākaṃ śaṃso abhyastu dūḍhyaḥ | tadā jānītota puṣyatā vaco'gne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

Gods, let the chariot of the offerer of the libation be foremost; let our denunciations overwhelm the wicked; understand and fulfil my words let us not suffer injury, Agni, through your friendship.

वधैर्दुःशंसाँ अप दूढ्यो जहि दूरे वा ये अन्ति वा के चिदत्रिणः । अथा यज्ञाय गृणते सुगं कृध्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

vadhairduḥśaṃsā~ apa dūḍhyo jahi dūre vā ye anti vā ke cidatriṇaḥ | athā yajñāya gṛṇate sugaṃ kṛdhyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

Overcome with your fatal (weapons) the wicked and the impious, all who are enemies, whether distant or near; and then provide an easy (path) for the sacrificer who praises you; let us not, Agni, suffer injury through your friendship.

यदयुक्था अरुषा रोहिता रथे वातजूता वृषभस्येव ते रवः । आदिन्वसि वनिनो धूमकेतुनाग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

yadayukthā aruṣā rohitā rathe vātajūtā vṛṣabhasyeva te ravaḥ | ādinvasi vanino dhūmaketunāgne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

When you have yoked the bright red horses (ete vai devāśvāḥ: Taittirīya Saṃhitā 1.7.4.3), swift as the wind, to your car, your roar is like that of a bull, and you enwrap the forest trees with a banner of smoke; let us not, Agni, suffer injury through your friendship.

अध स्वनादुत बिभ्युः पतत्रिणो द्रप्सा यत्ते यवसादो व्यस्थिरन् । सुगं तत्ते तावकेभ्यो रथेभ्योऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

adha svanāduta bibhyuḥ patatriṇo drapsā yatte yavasādo vyasthiran | sugaṃ tatte tāvakebhyo rathebhyo'gne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

At your roaring, even the birds are terrified; when your flames consuming the grass, have spread in all directions, (the wood) is easy of access to you and to your chariots; let us not, Agni, suffer injury through your friendship.

अयं मित्रस्य वरुणस्य धायसेऽवयातां मरुतां हेऴो अद्भुतः । मृऴा सु नो भूत्वेषां मनः पुनरग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

ayaṃ mitrasya varuṇasya dhāyase'vayātāṃ marutāṃ heḻo adbhutaḥ | mṛḻā su no bhūtveṣāṃ manaḥ punaragne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

May this, (your adorer) enjoy the support of Mitra and of Varuṇa; wonderful is the fury of the Maruts; (dwellers in the region) below (the heavens), encourage us, and may their minds again (be gracious) to us; let us not suffer injury, Agni, through your friendship.

देवो देवानामसि मित्रो अद्भुतो वसुर्वसूनामसि चारुरध्वरे । शर्मन्त्स्याम तव सप्रथस्तमेऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

devo devānāmasi mitro adbhuto vasurvasūnāmasi cāruradhvare | śarmantsyāma tava saprathastame'gne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

You, brilliant (Agni), are the especial friend of the gods; you, who are graceful in the sacrifice are the confirmer of all riches; may we be present in your most spacious chamber of sacrifice; let us not, Agni, suffer injury through your friendship.

तत्ते भद्रं यत्समिद्धः स्वे दमे सोमाहुतो जरसे मृऴयत्तमः । दधासि रत्नं द्रविणं च दाशुषेऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥

tatte bhadraṃ yatsamiddhaḥ sve dame somāhuto jarase mṛḻayattamaḥ | dadhāsi ratnaṃ draviṇaṃ ca dāśuṣe'gne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṃ tava ||

plural asant is it to you when you are lighted in your own abode, and propitiated by libations, are praised (by the priests); then, much delighted, you give rewards and riches to the worshipper; let us not, Agni, suffer injury through your friendship.

यस्मै त्वं सुद्रविणो ददाशोऽनागास्त्वमदिते सर्वताता । यं भद्रेण शवसा चोदयासि प्रजावता राधसा ते स्याम ॥

yasmai tvaṃ sudraviṇo dadāśo'nāgāstvamadite sarvatātā | yaṃ bhadreṇa śavasā codayāsi prajāvatā rādhasā te syāma ||

(Fortunate is the worshipper) to whom, (assiduos) in all pious works, you, possessor of riches, invisible Agni, grant exemption from sin, whom you associate with auspicious strength, may he be (enriched) by you with wealth that comprehends progeny.

स त्वमग्ने सौभगत्वस्य विद्वानस्माकमायुः प्र तिरेह देव । तन्नो मित्रो वरुणो मामहन्तामदितिः सिन्धुः पृथिवी उत द्यौः ॥

sa tvamagne saubhagatvasya vidvānasmākamāyuḥ pra tireha deva | tanno mitro varuṇo māmahantāmaditiḥ sindhuḥ pṛthivī uta dyauḥ ||

Do you, divine Agni, who kno what is good fortune, on this occasion prolong our existence, and may Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, ocean, earth and heaven, preserve it to us.
