[rv-1-8] • 10 श्लोकाः

एन्द्र सानसिं रयिं सजित्वानं सदासहम् । वर्षिष्ठमूतये भर ॥

endra sānasiṃ rayiṃ sajitvānaṃ sadāsaham | varṣiṣṭhamūtaye bhara ||

Indra, bring for our protection riches, most abundant, enjoyable, the source of victory, the humbler of our foes. [

नि येन मुष्टिहत्यया नि वृत्रा रुणधामहै । त्वोतासो न्यर्वता ॥

ni yena muṣṭihatyayā ni vṛtrā ruṇadhāmahai | tvotāso nyarvatā ||

By which we may repel our enemies, whether (encountering them) hand to hand, or on horse-back; ever protected by you. (muṣṭihatyayā = muṣṭiprahāreṇa) = lit. by striking with the fist; on horseback = with a horse (a reference to infantry and cavalry)].

इन्द्र त्वोतास आ वयं वज्रं घना ददीमहि । जयेम सं युधि स्पृधः ॥

indra tvotāsa ā vayaṃ vajraṃ ghanā dadīmahi | jayema saṃ yudhi spṛdhaḥ ||

Defended by you, Indra, we possess a ponderous weapon, wherewith we may entirely conquer our opponents.

वयं शूरेभिरस्तृभिरिन्द्र त्वया युजा वयम् । सासह्याम पृतन्यतः ॥

vayaṃ śūrebhirastṛbhirindra tvayā yujā vayam | sāsahyāma pṛtanyataḥ ||

With you for our ally, Indra, and (aided by) missile-hurling heroes, we are able to overcome (our foes) arrayed in hosts.

महाँ इन्द्रः परश्च नु महित्वमस्तु वज्रिणे । द्यौर्न प्रथिना शवः ॥

mahā~ indraḥ paraśca nu mahitvamastu vajriṇe | dyaurna prathinā śavaḥ ||

Mighty is Indra, and supreme; may magnitude ever (belong) to the bearer of the thunderbolt; may his strong (armies) be ever vast as the heavens.

समोहे वा य आशत नरस्तोकस्य सनितौ । विप्रासो वा धियायवः ॥

samohe vā ya āśata narastokasya sanitau | viprāso vā dhiyāyavaḥ ||

Whatever men have recourse to Indra in battle, or for the acquisition of offspring, and the wise who are desirous of understanding (obtain their desires).

यः कुक्षिः सोमपातमः समुद्र इव पिन्वते । उर्वीरापो न काकुदः ॥

yaḥ kukṣiḥ somapātamaḥ samudra iva pinvate | urvīrāpo na kākudaḥ ||

The belly of Indra, which quaffs the Soma juice abundantly, swells like the ocean, (and is ever) moist, like the ample fluids of the palate.

एवा ह्यस्य सूनृता विरप्शी गोमती मही । पक्वा शाखा न दाशुषे ॥

evā hyasya sūnṛtā virapśī gomatī mahī | pakvā śākhā na dāśuṣe ||

Verily the words of Indra to his worshipper are true, manifold, cow- conferring, and to be held in honour; (they are) like a branch (loaded with) ripe (fruit).

एवा हि ते विभूतय ऊतय इन्द्र मावते । सद्यश्चित्सन्ति दाशुषे ॥

evā hi te vibhūtaya ūtaya indra māvate | sadyaścitsanti dāśuṣe ||

Verily, Indra, your glories are at all times the protectors of every such worshipper as I am.

एवा ह्यस्य काम्या स्तोम उक्थं च शंस्या । इन्द्राय सोमपीतये ॥

evā hyasya kāmyā stoma ukthaṃ ca śaṃsyā | indrāya somapītaye ||

Verily his chanted and recited praises are to be desired and repeated to Indra, that he may drink the Soma juice.
