हिरण्यकेशो रजसो विसारेऽहिर्धुनिर्वात इव ध्रजीमान् । शुचिभ्राजा उषसो नवेदा यशस्वतीरपस्युवो न सत्याः ॥

hiraṇyakeśo rajaso visāre'hirdhunirvāta iva dhrajīmān | śucibhrājā uṣaso navedā yaśasvatīrapasyuvo na satyāḥ ||

The golden-haired Agni is the agitator of the clouds when the rain is poured forth, and, moving with the swiftness of the wind, shines with a bright radiance. The mornings know not (of the showers, like honest (people), who, provided with food, are intent upon their own labours.

आ ते सुपर्णा अमिनन्तँ एवैः कृष्णो नोनाव वृषभो यदीदम् । शिवाभिर्न स्मयमानाभिरागात्पतन्ति मिहः स्तनयन्त्यभ्रा ॥

ā te suparṇā aminanta~ evaiḥ kṛṣṇo nonāva vṛṣabho yadīdam | śivābhirna smayamānābhirāgātpatanti mihaḥ stanayantyabhrā ||

The falling (rays), accompanied by the moving (Maruts), strike against (the cloud); the black shedder of rain has roared; when this is done, (the shower) comes with delightful and smiling (drops), the rain descends, the clouds thunder.

यदीमृतस्य पयसा पियानो नयन्नृतस्य पथिभी रजिष्ठैः । अर्यमा मित्रो वरुणः परिज्मा त्वचं पृञ्चन्त्युपरस्य योनौ ॥

yadīmṛtasya payasā piyāno nayannṛtasya pathibhī rajiṣṭhaiḥ | aryamā mitro varuṇaḥ parijmā tvacaṃ pṛñcantyuparasya yonau ||

When this, (the lightning, Agni), nourishes the world with the milk of the rain, and conducts it by the most direct ways to (the enjoyment of) water, then Mitra, Aryaman, Varuṇa and the circumambient (troop of Maruts) pierce through the (investing) membrane into the womb of the cloud.

अग्ने वाजस्य गोमत ईशानः सहसो यहो । अस्मे धेहि जातवेदो महि श्रवः ॥

agne vājasya gomata īśānaḥ sahaso yaho | asme dhehi jātavedo mahi śravaḥ ||

Agni, sone of strength, lord of food and of cattle, give us abundant sustenance, you who know all that exists.

स इधानो वसुष्कविरग्निरीऴेन्यो गिरा । रेवदस्मभ्यं पुर्वणीक दीदिहि ॥

sa idhāno vasuṣkaviragnirīḻenyo girā | revadasmabhyaṃ purvaṇīka dīdihi ||

He, the blazing Agni, who is wise, and the granter of dwellings, is to be praised by our hymns; oḥ! you whose mouth (glows) with many (flames), shine (propitiously, so) that food-providing wealth may be ours.

क्षपो राजन्नुत त्मनाग्ने वस्तोरुतोषसः । स तिग्मजम्भ रक्षसो दह प्रति ॥

kṣapo rājannuta tmanāgne vastorutoṣasaḥ | sa tigmajambha rakṣaso daha prati ||

Shining Agni, drive off (all disturbers of the rite), either by yourself or (your servants) whether by day or by night; sharp-visaged Agni, destroy the rākṣasas entirely.

अवा नो अग्न ऊतिभिर्गायत्रस्य प्रभर्मणि । विश्वासु धीषु वन्द्य ॥

avā no agna ūtibhirgāyatrasya prabharmaṇi | viśvāsu dhīṣu vandya ||

Agni, who in all rites are to be praised, guard us with your protection, (propitiated) by the recitation of the metrical hymn.

आ नो अग्ने रयिं भर सत्रासाहं वरेण्यम् । विश्वासु पृत्सु दुष्टरम् ॥

ā no agne rayiṃ bhara satrāsāhaṃ vareṇyam | viśvāsu pṛtsu duṣṭaram ||

Grant us, Agni, riches that dispel poverty that are desirable (to all), and cannot be taken (from us) in all encounters (with our foes).

आ नो अग्ने सुचेतुना रयिं विश्वायुपोषसम् । मार्डीकं धेहि जीवसे ॥

ā no agne sucetunā rayiṃ viśvāyupoṣasam | mārḍīkaṃ dhehi jīvase ||

Grant us, Agni, for our livelihood, wealth, with sound understanding, conferring happiness, and sustaining (us) through life.

प्र पूतास्तिग्मशोचिषे वाचो गोतमाग्नये । भरस्व सुम्नयुर्गिरः ॥

pra pūtāstigmaśociṣe vāco gotamāgnaye | bharasva sumnayurgiraḥ ||

Gotama, desirous of wealth, offers to the sharp-flaming Agni pure prayers and praises.

यो नो अग्नेऽभिदासत्यन्ति दूरे पदीष्ट सः । अस्माकमिद्वृधे भव ॥

yo no agne'bhidāsatyanti dūre padīṣṭa saḥ | asmākamidvṛdhe bhava ||

May he, Agni, who annoys us, whether nigh or afar perish; and do you be to us (propitious) for our advancement.

सहस्राक्षो विचर्षणिरग्नी रक्षांसि सेधति । होता गृणीत उक्थ्यः ॥

sahasrākṣo vicarṣaṇiragnī rakṣāṃsi sedhati | hotā gṛṇīta ukthyaḥ ||

The thousand-eyed, all-beholding, Agni, drives away the rākṣasas, and (praised by us) with holy hymns, he, the (invoker of the gods) celebrates their praise.
