[rv-1-73] • 10 श्लोकाः

रयिर्न यः पितृवित्तो वयोधाः सुप्रणीतिश्चिकितुषो न शासुः । स्योनशीरतिथिर्न प्रीणानो होतेव सद्म विधतो वि तारीत् ॥

rayirna yaḥ pitṛvitto vayodhāḥ supraṇītiścikituṣo na śāsuḥ | syonaśīratithirna prīṇāno hoteva sadma vidhato vi tārīt ||

Agni, like patrimonial wealth, is the giver of food; he is a director, like the instrumental uctions of one learned in scripture; he rests in the sacrificial chamber like a welcome guest, and like an officiating priest, he brings prosperity on the house of the worshipper.

देवो न यः सविता सत्यमन्मा क्रत्वा निपाति वृजनानि विश्वा । पुरुप्रशस्तो अमतिर्न सत्य आत्मेव शेवो दिधिषाय्यो भूत् ॥

devo na yaḥ savitā satyamanmā kratvā nipāti vṛjanāni viśvā | purupraśasto amatirna satya ātmeva śevo didhiṣāyyo bhūt ||

He who is like the divine Sun, who know the truth (of things), preserves by his actions (his votaries) in all encounters; like nature, he is unchangeable and, like soul, is the source of happiness; he is ever to be cherished.

देवो न यः पृथिवीं विश्वधाया उपक्षेति हितमित्रो न राजा । पुरःसदः शर्मसदो न वीरा अनवद्या पतिजुष्टेव नारी ॥

devo na yaḥ pṛthivīṃ viśvadhāyā upakṣeti hitamitro na rājā | puraḥsadaḥ śarmasado na vīrā anavadyā patijuṣṭeva nārī ||

He who, like the divine (Sun), is the supporter of the universe, abides on earth like a prince, (surrounded by) faithful friends; in his presence, men sit down like sons in the dwelling of a parent, and (in purity he resembles) an irreproachable and beloved wife.

तं त्वा नरो दम आ नित्यमिद्धमग्ने सचन्त क्षितिषु ध्रुवासु । अधि द्युम्नं नि दधुर्भूर्यस्मिन्भवा विश्वायुर्धरुणो रयीणाम् ॥

taṃ tvā naro dama ā nityamiddhamagne sacanta kṣitiṣu dhruvāsu | adhi dyumnaṃ ni dadhurbhūryasminbhavā viśvāyurdharuṇo rayīṇām ||

Such as you are, Agni, men preserve you constantly kindled in their dwellings, in secure plural ces, and offer upon you abundant (sacrificial) food; do you, in whom is all existence, be the bearer of riches (for our advantage).

वि पृक्षो अग्ने मघवानो अश्युर्वि सूरयो ददतो विश्वमायुः । सनेम वाजं समिथेष्वर्यो भागं देवेषु श्रवसे दधानाः ॥

vi pṛkṣo agne maghavāno aśyurvi sūrayo dadato viśvamāyuḥ | sanema vājaṃ samitheṣvaryo bhāgaṃ deveṣu śravase dadhānāḥ ||

May your opulent worshippers, Agni, obtain (abundant) food; may the learned (who praise you) and offer you (oblations), acquire long life; may we gain in battles booty from our foes, presenting their portion to the gods for (the acquisition of) renown.

ऋतस्य हि धेनवो वावशानाः स्मदूध्नीः पीपयन्त द्युभक्ताः । परावतः सुमतिं भिक्षमाणा वि सिन्धवः समया सस्रुरद्रिम् ॥

ṛtasya hi dhenavo vāvaśānāḥ smadūdhnīḥ pīpayanta dyubhaktāḥ | parāvataḥ sumatiṃ bhikṣamāṇā vi sindhavaḥ samayā sasruradrim ||

The cows, loving (Agni, who has come to thehall of sacrifice), sharing his splendour, have brought with full udders (their milk) to be drunk. The rivers, soliciting his good will, have flowed from a distance in the vicinity of the mountain.

त्वे अग्ने सुमतिं भिक्षमाणा दिवि श्रवो दधिरे यज्ञियासः । नक्ता च चक्रुरुषसा विरूपे कृष्णं च वर्णमरुणं च सं धुः ॥

tve agne sumatiṃ bhikṣamāṇā divi śravo dadhire yajñiyāsaḥ | naktā ca cakruruṣasā virūpe kṛṣṇaṃ ca varṇamaruṇaṃ ca saṃ dhuḥ ||

(The gods), who are entitled to worship, soliciting your good will, have entrusted to you, resplendent Agni, the (sacrificial) food, and, (for the due observance of sacred rites), they have made the night and morning of different colours, or black and purple.

यान्राये मर्तान्त्सुषूदो अग्ने ते स्याम मघवानो वयं च । छायेव विश्वं भुवनं सिसक्ष्यापप्रिवान्रोदसी अन्तरिक्षम् ॥

yānrāye martāntsuṣūdo agne te syāma maghavāno vayaṃ ca | chāyeva viśvaṃ bhuvanaṃ sisakṣyāpaprivānrodasī antarikṣam ||

May we, mortals, whom you have directed (to the performance of sacrifices) for the sake of riches, become opulent; filling heaven and earth, and the firmament (with your radiance), you protect the whole world like a (sheltering) shade.

अर्वद्भिरग्ने अर्वतो नृभिर्नॄन्वीरैर्वीरान्वनुयामा त्वोताः । ईशानासः पितृवित्तस्य रायो वि सूरयः शतहिमा नो अश्युः ॥

arvadbhiragne arvato nṛbhirnṝnvīrairvīrānvanuyāmā tvotāḥ | īśānāsaḥ pitṛvittasya rāyo vi sūrayaḥ śatahimā no aśyuḥ ||

Defended, Agni, by you, may we destroy the horses (of your enemies) by (our) horses, their men by (our) men, their sons by (our) sons, and may our sons, learned and inheritors of ancestral wealth, live for a hundred winters.

एता ते अग्न उचथानि वेधो जुष्टानि सन्तु मनसे हृदे च । शकेम रायः सुधुरो यमं तेऽधि श्रवो देवभक्तं दधानाः ॥

etā te agna ucathāni vedho juṣṭāni santu manase hṛde ca | śakema rāyaḥ sudhuro yamaṃ te'dhi śravo devabhaktaṃ dadhānāḥ ||

May these our praises, sapient Agni, be grateful to you, both in mind and heart; may we be competent to detain your well-supporting wealth, offering upon you their share of the (sacrificial food of the gods).
