[rv-1-39] • 10 श्लोकाः

प्र यदित्था परावतः शोचिर्न मानमस्यथ । कस्य क्रत्वा मरुतः कस्य वर्पसा कं याथ कं ह धूतयः ॥

pra yaditthā parāvataḥ śocirna mānamasyatha | kasya kratvā marutaḥ kasya varpasā kaṃ yātha kaṃ ha dhūtayaḥ ||

When Maruts, who make (all things) tremble, you direct your awful (vigour) downwards from afar, as light (descends from heaven), by whose worship by whose praise (are you attracted)? to what (plural ce of sacrifice), to whom, indeed, do you repair?

स्थिरा वः सन्त्वायुधा पराणुदे वीऴू उत प्रतिष्कभे । युष्माकमस्तु तविषी पनीयसी मा मर्त्यस्य मायिनः ॥

sthirā vaḥ santvāyudhā parāṇude vīḻū uta pratiṣkabhe | yuṣmākamastu taviṣī panīyasī mā martyasya māyinaḥ ||

Strong be your weapons for driving away (your) foes, firm in resisting them; yours be the strength that merits praise, not (the strength) of a treacherous mortal.

परा ह यत्स्थिरं हथ नरो वर्तयथा गुरु । वि याथन वनिनः पृथिव्या व्याशाः पर्वतानाम् ॥

parā ha yatsthiraṃ hatha naro vartayathā guru | vi yāthana vaninaḥ pṛthivyā vyāśāḥ parvatānām ||

Directing Maruts, when you demolish what is stable, when you scatter what is ponderous, then you make your way through the forest (trees) of earth and the defiles of the mountains.

नहि वः शत्रुर्विविदे अधि द्यवि न भूम्यां रिशादसः । युष्माकमस्तु तविषी तना युजा रुद्रासो नू चिदाधृषे ॥

nahi vaḥ śatrurvivide adhi dyavi na bhūmyāṃ riśādasaḥ | yuṣmākamastu taviṣī tanā yujā rudrāso nū cidādhṛṣe ||

Destroyers of foes, no adversary of yours is known above the heavens, nor (is any) upon earth; may your collective strength be quickly exerted, sons of Rudra, to humble (your enemies).

प्र वेपयन्ति पर्वतान्वि विञ्चन्ति वनस्पतीन् । प्रो आरत मरुतो दुर्मदा इव देवासः सर्वया विशा ॥

pra vepayanti parvatānvi viñcanti vanaspatīn | pro ārata maruto durmadā iva devāsaḥ sarvayā viśā ||

They make the mountains tremble, they drive apart the forest-trees. Go, divine Maruts, whither you will, with all your progeny, like those intoxicated.

उपो रथेषु पृषतीरयुग्ध्वं प्रष्टिर्वहति रोहितः । आ वो यामाय पृथिवी चिदश्रोदबीभयन्त मानुषाः ॥

upo ratheṣu pṛṣatīrayugdhvaṃ praṣṭirvahati rohitaḥ | ā vo yāmāya pṛthivī cidaśrodabībhayanta mānuṣāḥ ||

You have harnessed the spotted deer to your chariot; the red deer yoked between them, (aids to) drag the car; the firmament listens for your coming, and men are alarmed.

आ वो मक्षू तनाय कं रुद्रा अवो वृणीमहे । गन्ता नूनं नोऽवसा यथा पुरेत्था कण्वाय बिभ्युषे ॥

ā vo makṣū tanāya kaṃ rudrā avo vṛṇīmahe | gantā nūnaṃ no'vasā yathā puretthā kaṇvāya bibhyuṣe ||

Rudras, we have recourse to your assistance for the sake of our progeny; come quickly to the timid Kaṇva, as you formerly came, for our protection.

युष्मेषितो मरुतो मर्त्येषित आ यो नो अभ्व ईषते । वि तं युयोत शवसा व्योजसा वि युष्माकाभिरूतिभिः ॥

yuṣmeṣito maruto martyeṣita ā yo no abhva īṣate | vi taṃ yuyota śavasā vyojasā vi yuṣmākābhirūtibhiḥ ||

Should any adversary, instrumental gated by you, or by man, assail us, withhold from him food and strength and your assistance.

असामि हि प्रयज्यवः कण्वं दद प्रचेतसः । असामिभिर्मरुत आ न ऊतिभिर्गन्ता वृष्टिं न विद्युतः ॥

asāmi hi prayajyavaḥ kaṇvaṃ dada pracetasaḥ | asāmibhirmaruta ā na ūtibhirgantā vṛṣṭiṃ na vidyutaḥ ||

Pracetasas, who are to be unreservedly worshipped, uphold (the sacrificer) Kaṇva; come to us, Maruts, with undivided protective assistance, as the lightning (bring) the rain.

असाम्योजो बिभृथा सुदानवोऽसामि धूतयः शवः । ऋषिद्विषे मरुतः परिमन्यव इषुं न सृजत द्विषम् ॥

asāmyojo bibhṛthā sudānavo'sāmi dhūtayaḥ śavaḥ | ṛṣidviṣe marutaḥ parimanyava iṣuṃ na sṛjata dviṣam ||

Bounteous givers, you enjoy unimpaired vigour; shakers (of the earth), you possess undiminished strength; Maruts, let loose your anger, like an arrow, upon the wrathful enemy of the ṛṣis.
