[rv-1-191] • 16 श्लोकाः

कङ्कतो न कङ्कतोऽथो सतीनकङ्कतः । द्वाविति प्लुषी इति न्यदृष्टा अलिप्सत ॥

kaṅkato na kaṅkato'tho satīnakaṅkataḥ | dvāviti pluṣī iti nyadṛṣṭā alipsata ||

Some creature of little venom, some creature of great venom; or some venomous aquatic reptile; creatures of two kinds, both destructive (of life),or (poisonous) unseen creatures, have anointed me with their poison.

अदृष्टान्हन्त्यायत्यथो हन्ति परायती । अथो अवघ्नती हन्त्यथो पिनष्टि पिंषती ॥

adṛṣṭānhantyāyatyatho hanti parāyatī | atho avaghnatī hantyatho pinaṣṭi piṃṣatī ||

(the antidote), coming (to the bitten person n), destroys the unseen (venomous creatures); departing (it destroys them); deprived (of substance), it destroys them (by its odour); being ground, it pulverises them.

शरासः कुशरासो दर्भासः सैर्या उत । मौञ्जा अदृष्टा वैरिणाः सर्वे साकं न्यलिप्सत ॥

śarāsaḥ kuśarāso darbhāsaḥ sairyā uta | mauñjā adṛṣṭā vairiṇāḥ sarve sākaṃ nyalipsata ||

(Blades of) śarā grass, (of) kuśarā, (of) darbha, (of) sairyā, (of) muñja, (of) vīraṇa, all (the haunt) of unseen (venomous creatures), have together anointed me (with their venom).

नि गावो गोष्ठे असदन्नि मृगासो अविक्षत । नि केतवो जनानां न्यदृष्टा अलिप्सत ॥

ni gāvo goṣṭhe asadanni mṛgāso avikṣata | ni ketavo janānāṃ nyadṛṣṭā alipsata ||

The cows had lain down in their stalls; the wild beasts had retreated (to their lairs); the senses of men were at rest; when the unseen (venomous creatures) anointed me (with their venom).

एत उ त्ये प्रत्यदृश्रन्प्रदोषं तस्करा इव । अदृष्टा विश्वदृष्टाः प्रतिबुद्धा अभूतन ॥

eta u tye pratyadṛśranpradoṣaṃ taskarā iva | adṛṣṭā viśvadṛṣṭāḥ pratibuddhā abhūtana ||

Or they may be discovered (in the dark), as thieves in the (dusk of) evening; for although they be unseen, yet all are seen by them; therefore, men, be vigilant.

द्यौर्वः पिता पृथिवी माता सोमो भ्रातादितिः स्वसा । अदृष्टा विश्वदृष्टास्तिष्ठतेलयता सु कम् ॥

dyaurvaḥ pitā pṛthivī mātā somo bhrātāditiḥ svasā | adṛṣṭā viśvadṛṣṭāstiṣṭhatelayatā su kam ||

Heaven, (serpents), is your father; Earth, your mother; Soma, your brother; Aditi, your sister; unseen all-seeing abide (in your own holes); enjoy (your own) good plural asure.

ये अंस्या ये अङ्ग्याः सूचीका ये प्रकङ्कताः । अदृष्टाः किं चनेह वः सर्वे साकं नि जस्यत ॥

ye aṃsyā ye aṅgyāḥ sūcīkā ye prakaṅkatāḥ | adṛṣṭāḥ kiṃ caneha vaḥ sarve sākaṃ ni jasyata ||

Those (who move with their) shoulders, those (who move with their) bodies, those who sting with sharp fangs, those who are virulently venomous; what do you here, you unseen, depart together far from us.

उत्पुरस्तात्सूर्य एति विश्वदृष्टो अदृष्टहा । अदृष्टान्त्सर्वाञ्जम्भयन्त्सर्वाश्च यातुधान्यः ॥

utpurastātsūrya eti viśvadṛṣṭo adṛṣṭahā | adṛṣṭāntsarvāñjambhayantsarvāśca yātudhānyaḥ ||

The all-seeing Sun rises in the east, the destroyer of the unseen, driving away all the unseen (venomous creatures), and all evil spirits.

उदपप्तदसौ सूर्यः पुरु विश्वानि जूर्वन् । आदित्यः पर्वतेभ्यो विश्वदृष्टो अदृष्टहा ॥

udapaptadasau sūryaḥ puru viśvāni jūrvan | ādityaḥ parvatebhyo viśvadṛṣṭo adṛṣṭahā ||

The Sun has risen on high, destroying all the many (poisons); Āditya, the all-seeing, the destroyer of the unseen, (rises) for (the good of) living beings.

सूर्ये विषमा सजामि दृतिं सुरावतो गृहे । सो चिन्नु न मराति नो वयं मरामारे अस्य योजनं हरिष्ठा मधु त्वा मधुला चकार ॥

sūrye viṣamā sajāmi dṛtiṃ surāvato gṛhe | so cinnu na marāti no vayaṃ marāmāre asya yojanaṃ hariṣṭhā madhu tvā madhulā cakāra ||

I deposit the poison in the solar orb, like a leather bottle in the house of a vendor of spirits; verily, that adorable (Sun) never dies; nor, (through his favour), shall we die (of the venom); for, though afar off, yet drawn by his coursers, he will overtake (the poison); the science of antidoes converted you, (Poison), to ambrosia.

इयत्तिका शकुन्तिका सका जघास ते विषम् । सो चिन्नु न मराति नो वयं मरामारे अस्य योजनं हरिष्ठा मधु त्वा मधुला चकार ॥

iyattikā śakuntikā sakā jaghāsa te viṣam | so cinnu na marāti no vayaṃ marāmāre asya yojanaṃ hariṣṭhā madhu tvā madhulā cakāra ||

That little insignifcant bird has swallowed your venom; she does not die; nor shall we die; for, although afar off, yet drawn by his coursers, (the Sun) will overtake (the poison); the science of antidotes has converted you, (Poison), to ambrosia.

त्रिः सप्त विष्पुलिङ्गका विषस्य पुष्यमक्षन् । ताश्चिन्नु न मरन्ति नो वयं मरामारे अस्य योजनं हरिष्ठा मधु त्वा मधुला चकार ॥

triḥ sapta viṣpuliṅgakā viṣasya puṣyamakṣan | tāścinnu na maranti no vayaṃ marāmāre asya yojanaṃ hariṣṭhā madhu tvā madhulā cakāra ||

May the thrice-seven sparks (of Agni) consume the influence of the venom; they verily do not perish;nor shall we die; for, although afar off, the Sun, drawn by his coursers, will overtake the poison; the science of antidotes has converted you, (Poison), to ambrosia.

नवानां नवतीनां विषस्य रोपुषीणाम् । सर्वासामग्रभं नामारे अस्य योजनं हरिष्ठा मधु त्वा मधुला चकार ॥

navānāṃ navatīnāṃ viṣasya ropuṣīṇām | sarvāsāmagrabhaṃ nāmāre asya yojanaṃ hariṣṭhā madhu tvā madhulā cakāra ||

I recite the names of ninety and nine (rivers), the destroyers of poison; although afar off, (the Sun), drawn by his coursers, will overtake the poison; the science of antidotes has converted you, (Poison), to ambrosia.

त्रिः सप्त मयूर्यः सप्त स्वसारो अग्रुवः । तास्ते विषं वि जभ्रिर उदकं कुम्भिनीरिव ॥

triḥ sapta mayūryaḥ sapta svasāro agruvaḥ | tāste viṣaṃ vi jabhrira udakaṃ kumbhinīriva ||

May the thrice-seven peahens, the seven-sister rivers, carry off, (O Body), your poison, as maidens, with pitchers, carry away water.

इयत्तकः कुषुम्भकस्तकं भिनद्म्यश्मना । ततो विषं प्र वावृते पराचीरनु संवतः ॥

iyattakaḥ kuṣumbhakastakaṃ bhinadmyaśmanā | tato viṣaṃ pra vāvṛte parācīranu saṃvataḥ ||

May the insignificant mongoose (carry off) your venom, (Poison); if not, I will crush the vile (creature) with a stone; so may the poison depart (from my body) and go to distant regions.

कुषुम्भकस्तदब्रवीद्गिरेः प्रवर्तमानकः । वृश्चिकस्यारसं विषमरसं वृश्चिक ते विषम् ॥

kuṣumbhakastadabravīdgireḥ pravartamānakaḥ | vṛścikasyārasaṃ viṣamarasaṃ vṛścika te viṣam ||

Hastening forth at the command (of Agastya), thus spoke the mongoose: the venom of the scorpion is innocuous; scorpion, your venom is innocuous.
