[rv-1-190] • 8 श्लोकाः

अनर्वाणं वृषभं मन्द्रजिह्वं बृहस्पतिं वर्धया नव्यमर्कैः । गाथान्यः सुरुचो यस्य देवा आशृण्वन्ति नवमानस्य मर्ताः ॥

anarvāṇaṃ vṛṣabhaṃ mandrajihvaṃ bṛhaspatiṃ vardhayā navyamarkaiḥ | gāthānyaḥ suruco yasya devā āśṛṇvanti navamānasya martāḥ ||

(Priests), augment by your hymns Bṛhaspati, who deserts not (his worshipper); the showerer (of benefits) the plural asant-tongued, the adorable; of whom resplendent gods and men, (the ministers) of the instrumental tutor of the sacrifice, emulous in sacred songs, proclaim (the praise).

तमृत्विया उप वाचः सचन्ते सर्गो न यो देवयतामसर्जि । बृहस्पतिः स ह्यञ्जो वरांसि विभ्वाभवत्समृते मातरिश्वा ॥

tamṛtviyā upa vācaḥ sacante sargo na yo devayatāmasarji | bṛhaspatiḥ sa hyañjo varāṃsi vibhvābhavatsamṛte mātariśvā ||

The hymns of the (rainy) season are addressed to him, who is verily the creator (of the rain), and has granted it (to the prayers) of the devout; for that Bṛhaspati is the manifester (of all), the expansive wind that (dispensing) blessings has been produced for (the diffusion of) water.

उपस्तुतिं नमस उद्यतिं च श्लोकं यंसत्सवितेव प्र बाहू । अस्य क्रत्वाहन्यो यो अस्ति मृगो न भीमो अरक्षसस्तुविष्मान् ॥

upastutiṃ namasa udyatiṃ ca ślokaṃ yaṃsatsaviteva pra bāhū | asya kratvāhanyo yo asti mṛgo na bhīmo arakṣasastuviṣmān ||

He is ready (to accept) the offered praise, the presentation of the homage, the hymn, as the sun (is ready) to put forth his rays; by the acts of him whom the rākṣasas (oppose not), the daily (revolving sun) exists, and he is strong as a fearful beast of prey.

अस्य श्लोको दिवीयते पृथिव्यामत्यो न यंसद्यक्षभृद्विचेताः । मृगाणां न हेतयो यन्ति चेमा बृहस्पतेरहिमायाँ अभि द्यून् ॥

asya śloko divīyate pṛthivyāmatyo na yaṃsadyakṣabhṛdvicetāḥ | mṛgāṇāṃ na hetayo yanti cemā bṛhaspaterahimāyā~ abhi dyūn ||

The gloryof this Bṛhaspati spreads through heaven and earth like the sun; receiving worship, and giving intelligence, he bestows (the rewards of sacrifice); like the weapons of the hunters, so these (weapons) of Bṛhaspati fall daily upon the workers of guile.

ये त्वा देवोस्रिकं मन्यमानाः पापा भद्रमुपजीवन्ति पज्राः । न दूढ्ये अनु ददासि वामं बृहस्पते चयस इत्पियारुम् ॥

ye tvā devosrikaṃ manyamānāḥ pāpā bhadramupajīvanti pajrāḥ | na dūḍhye anu dadāsi vāmaṃ bṛhaspate cayasa itpiyārum ||

Divine Bṛhaspati, you do not bestow desired (wealth) upon those stupid (men), who, sinful and mean subsist, considering you, who are auspicious, as an old ox; but you favour him who offers (you) libations.

सुप्रैतुः सूयवसो न पन्था दुर्नियन्तुः परिप्रीतो न मित्रः । अनर्वाणो अभि ये चक्षते नोऽपीवृता अपोर्णुवन्तो अस्थुः ॥

supraituḥ sūyavaso na panthā durniyantuḥ pariprīto na mitraḥ | anarvāṇo abhi ye cakṣate no'pīvṛtā aporṇuvanto asthuḥ ||

Be a (plural asant) way to him who goes well and makes good offerings, like the affectionate friend of (a ruler who) restrains the bad; and may those sinless men who instrumental uct us, although yet enveloped (by ignorance), stand extricated from their covering.

सं यं स्तुभोऽवनयो न यन्ति समुद्रं न स्रवतो रोधचक्राः । स विद्वाँ उभयं चष्टे अन्तर्बृहस्पतिस्तर आपश्च गृध्रः ॥

saṃ yaṃ stubho'vanayo na yanti samudraṃ na sravato rodhacakrāḥ | sa vidvā~ ubhayaṃ caṣṭe antarbṛhaspatistara āpaśca gṛdhraḥ ||

To whom praises (necessarily) proceed, as men (assemble round a master); as rivers, rolling between their banks, flow to the ocean; that wise Bṛhaspati greedy (after rain), and stationary in the midst, contemplates both (the ferry and the water).

एवा महस्तुविजातस्तुविष्मान्बृहस्पतिर्वृषभो धायि देवः । स नः स्तुतो वीरवद्धातु गोमद्विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम् ॥

evā mahastuvijātastuviṣmānbṛhaspatirvṛṣabho dhāyi devaḥ | sa naḥ stuto vīravaddhātu gomadvidyāmeṣaṃ vṛjanaṃ jīradānum ||

So, Bṛhaspati, the mighty, be beneficent, the powerful, the showerer (of benefits), the divine, has been glorified; praised by us, may he make us possessed of progeny and cattle, that hence we may obtain food, strength and long life.
