कतरा पूर्वा कतरापरायोः कथा जाते कवयः को वि वेद । विश्वं त्मना बिभृतो यद्ध नाम वि वर्तेते अहनी चक्रियेव ॥

katarā pūrvā katarāparāyoḥ kathā jāte kavayaḥ ko vi veda | viśvaṃ tmanā bibhṛto yaddha nāma vi vartete ahanī cakriyeva ||

Which of these two, (Heaven and Earth), is prior which posterior; how were they engendered; (declare), sages, who knows this? verily, you uphold the universe of itself, and the days (and nights) revolve as if they had wheels.

भूरिं द्वे अचरन्ती चरन्तं पद्वन्तं गर्भमपदी दधाते । नित्यं न सूनुं पित्रोरुपस्थे द्यावा रक्षतं पृथिवी नो अभ्वात् ॥

bhūriṃ dve acarantī carantaṃ padvantaṃ garbhamapadī dadhāte | nityaṃ na sūnuṃ pitrorupasthe dyāvā rakṣataṃ pṛthivī no abhvāt ||

Footless and motionless, they sustain numerous moving and footed races, as a son is even (nursed) on the lap of his parents; defend us, Heaven and Earth, from great (danger).

अनेहो दात्रमदितेरनर्वं हुवे स्वर्वदवधं नमस्वत् । तद्रोदसी जनयतं जरित्रे द्यावा रक्षतं पृथिवी नो अभ्वात् ॥

aneho dātramaditeranarvaṃ huve svarvadavadhaṃ namasvat | tadrodasī janayataṃ jaritre dyāvā rakṣataṃ pṛthivī no abhvāt ||

I solicit of Aditi, wealth, without pain or decay, like heaven (in fullness of enjoyment), exempt from injury, and abounding in food; grant, Heaven and Earth, such wealth to him who praises you; defend us, Heaven and Earth, from great (danger).

अतप्यमाने अवसावन्ती अनु ष्याम रोदसी देवपुत्रे । उभे देवानामुभयेभिरह्नां द्यावा रक्षतं पृथिवी नो अभ्वात् ॥

atapyamāne avasāvantī anu ṣyāma rodasī devaputre | ubhe devānāmubhayebhirahnāṃ dyāvā rakṣataṃ pṛthivī no abhvāt ||

May we ever be (devoted to) that Heaven and Earth, who are not subject to annoyance, who satisfy (all beings) with food, who have the gods (and men) for sons, and who are both endowed with the double (condition) of the divine days (and nights); defend us, Heaven and Earth, from great (danger).

संगच्छमाने युवती समन्ते स्वसारा जामी पित्रोरुपस्थे । अभिजिघ्रन्ती भुवनस्य नाभिं द्यावा रक्षतं पृथिवी नो अभ्वात् ॥

saṃgacchamāne yuvatī samante svasārā jāmī pitrorupasthe | abhijighrantī bhuvanasya nābhiṃ dyāvā rakṣataṃ pṛthivī no abhvāt ||

Going always together, equally young, and of the like termination, sisters, and kindred, and scenting the navel of the world, plural ced on their lap as its parents; defend us, Heaven and Earth, from great danger.

उर्वी सद्मनी बृहती ऋतेन हुवे देवानामवसा जनित्री । दधाते ये अमृतं सुप्रतीके द्यावा रक्षतं पृथिवी नो अभ्वात् ॥

urvī sadmanī bṛhatī ṛtena huve devānāmavasā janitrī | dadhāte ye amṛtaṃ supratīke dyāvā rakṣataṃ pṛthivī no abhvāt ||

I invoke to the sacrifice, for the preservation of gods (and men), the two vast, all-supporting, and mighty parents (of the rain and corn); who, beautiful in form, sustain ambrosial (showers); defend us, Heaven and Earth, from great danger.

उर्वी पृथ्वी बहुले दूरेअन्ते उप ब्रुवे नमसा यज्ञे अस्मिन् । दधाते ये सुभगे सुप्रतूर्ती द्यावा रक्षतं पृथिवी नो अभ्वात् ॥

urvī pṛthvī bahule dūreante upa bruve namasā yajñe asmin | dadhāte ye subhage supratūrtī dyāvā rakṣataṃ pṛthivī no abhvāt ||

I glorify with reverence, at this sacrifice, (the two), who are vast, expansive, multiform, infinite, auspicious;who support (all beings) by their bounty; defend us, Heaven and Earth, from great danger.

देवान्वा यच्चकृमा कच्चिदागः सखायं वा सदमिज्जास्पतिं वा । इयं धीर्भूया अवयानमेषां द्यावा रक्षतं पृथिवी नो अभ्वात् ॥

devānvā yaccakṛmā kaccidāgaḥ sakhāyaṃ vā sadamijjāspatiṃ vā | iyaṃ dhīrbhūyā avayānameṣāṃ dyāvā rakṣataṃ pṛthivī no abhvāt ||

May this sacrifice be the means of expiating those offences which we may have committed against the gods, against a friend at any time, against a son-in-law; defend us, Heaven and Earth, from great danger.

उभा शंसा नर्या मामविष्टामुभे मामूती अवसा सचेताम् । भूरि चिदर्यः सुदास्तरायेषा मदन्त इषयेम देवाः ॥

ubhā śaṃsā naryā māmaviṣṭāmubhe māmūtī avasā sacetām | bhūri cidaryaḥ sudāstarāyeṣā madanta iṣayema devāḥ ||

May both these, accepting praise, and friendly to man, be favourable to me; may they both be associated as guardians for my protection; deities, we your adorers, propitiating you with (sacrificial) food, desire ample (wealth), for the sake of makign liberal donations.

ऋतं दिवे तदवोचं पृथिव्या अभिश्रावाय प्रथमं सुमेधाः । पातामवद्याद्दुरितादभीके पिता माता च रक्षतामवोभिः ॥

ṛtaṃ dive tadavocaṃ pṛthivyā abhiśrāvāya prathamaṃ sumedhāḥ | pātāmavadyādduritādabhīke pitā mātā ca rakṣatāmavobhiḥ ||

Endowed with understanding, I repeat to Heaven and Earth this initial praise, to be heard around; may paternal (heaven) and maternal (earth) preserve us from reprehensible iniquity; and ever nigh defend us with their protection.

इदं द्यावापृथिवी सत्यमस्तु पितर्मातर्यदिहोपब्रुवे वाम् । भूतं देवानामवमे अवोभिर्विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम् ॥

idaṃ dyāvāpṛthivī satyamastu pitarmātaryadihopabruve vām | bhūtaṃ devānāmavame avobhirvidyāmeṣaṃ vṛjanaṃ jīradānum ||

May this (hymn), Heaven and Earth,be successful; (the hymn) which, Father and Mother, I repeat to you both on this occasion; be ever with your protection in the proximity of those who praise you; that we may obtain food, strength, and long life.
