गायत्साम नभन्यं यथा वेरर्चाम तद्वावृधानं स्वर्वत् । गावो धेनवो बर्हिष्यदब्धा आ यत्सद्मानं दिव्यं विवासान् ॥

gāyatsāma nabhanyaṃ yathā verarcāma tadvāvṛdhānaṃ svarvat | gāvo dhenavo barhiṣyadabdhā ā yatsadmānaṃ divyaṃ vivāsān ||

The priests chant the heaven-ascending sāma, as you know (it), for such (praise) do we venerate as the cause of increase and conferrer of heaven, whence the kine, unimpeded, do honour to the divine (Indra), who is seated on the sacred grass.

अर्चद्वृषा वृषभिः स्वेदुहव्यैर्मृगो नाश्नो अति यज्जुगुर्यात् । प्र मन्दयुर्मनां गूर्त होता भरते मर्यो मिथुना यजत्रः ॥

arcadvṛṣā vṛṣabhiḥ sveduhavyairmṛgo nāśno ati yajjuguryāt | pra mandayurmanāṃ gūrta hotā bharate maryo mithunā yajatraḥ ||

The showerer (of the oblation, the offerer of the sacrifice, assisted) by (the priests), presenting the oblations which have been provided by himself, adores (Indra), in order that he may hasten (to the rite), as a (thirsty) deer to the water. The mortal invoker (of the gods), O mighty Indra, whilst glorifying them who are desirous of praise, presents a twofold offering (to you).

नक्षद्धोता परि सद्म मिता यन्भरद्गर्भमा शरदः पृथिव्याः । क्रन्ददश्वो नयमानो रुवद्गौरन्तर्दूतो न रोदसी चरद्वाक् ॥

nakṣaddhotā pari sadma mitā yanbharadgarbhamā śaradaḥ pṛthivyāḥ | krandadaśvo nayamāno ruvadgaurantardūto na rodasī caradvāk ||

The invoker (of the gods, Agni), pervades the measured stations (of the altars), and accepts that (oblation), which is the germ of the year of the earth; as a horse neighs when bringing (the offering to Indra), as a bull bellows like a messenger proclaiming (his message) between heaven and earth.

ता कर्माषतरास्मै प्र च्यौत्नानि देवयन्तो भरन्ते । जुजोषदिन्द्रो दस्मवर्चा नासत्येव सुग्म्यो रथेष्ठाः ॥

tā karmāṣatarāsmai pra cyautnāni devayanto bharante | jujoṣadindro dasmavarcā nāsatyeva sugmyo ratheṣṭhāḥ ||

We offer to him, (Indra), the most pious (oblations); the worshippers of the gods present to him substantial (adorations); may he, of conspicuous lustre, standing in his car, and light-moving like the Aśvins, be gratified (by our worship).

तमु ष्टुहीन्द्रं यो ह सत्वा यः शूरो मघवा यो रथेष्ठाः । प्रतीचश्चिद्योधीयान्वृषण्वान्ववव्रुषश्चित्तमसो विहन्ता ॥

tamu ṣṭuhīndraṃ yo ha satvā yaḥ śūro maghavā yo ratheṣṭhāḥ | pratīcaścidyodhīyānvṛṣaṇvānvavavruṣaścittamaso vihantā ||

Glorify that Indra who is mighty, who is a hero, possessing abundant wealth, standing in his car, a valiant combatant against adversaries, the wilder of the thunderbolt, the dispenser of all-enveloping gloom.

प्र यदित्था महिना नृभ्यो अस्त्यरं रोदसी कक्ष्ये नास्मै । सं विव्य इन्द्रो वृजनं न भूमा भर्ति स्वधावाँ ओपशमिव द्याम् ॥

pra yaditthā mahinā nṛbhyo astyaraṃ rodasī kakṣye nāsmai | saṃ vivya indro vṛjanaṃ na bhūmā bharti svadhāvā~ opaśamiva dyām ||

Heaven and earth are insufficient for the girth of that Indra, who, with his greatness, rules over the leaders (of sacrifice); as the atmosphere encompasses the earth, so he encompasses (the three worlds), and, being the master of the rain, he upholds the sky as well as the firmament and the earth.

समत्सु त्वा शूर सतामुराणं प्रपथिन्तमं परितंसयध्यै । सजोषस इन्द्रं मदे क्षोणीः सूरिं चिद्ये अनुमदन्ति वाजैः ॥

samatsu tvā śūra satāmurāṇaṃ prapathintamaṃ paritaṃsayadhyai | sajoṣasa indraṃ made kṣoṇīḥ sūriṃ cidye anumadanti vājaiḥ ||

Those people, who, jointly worshipping Indra, diligently endeavour, O hero, to propitiate you, the invigorator in combats, the guide in the right way; provide, for his gratification, with sacrificial viands.

एवा हि ते शं सवना समुद्र आपो यत्त आसु मदन्ति देवीः । विश्वा ते अनु जोष्या भूद्गौः सूरीँश्चिद्यदि धिषा वेषि जनान् ॥

evā hi te śaṃ savanā samudra āpo yatta āsu madanti devīḥ | viśvā te anu joṣyā bhūdgauḥ sūrī~ścidyadi dhiṣā veṣi janān ||

The libations (offered) to you are, verily, the cause of happiness, since the divine waters (effused) in the firmament for the benefit of mankind afford you satisfaction. All praise, Indra, is acceptable to you, and you reward with understanding those who praise you.

असाम यथा सुषखाय एन स्वभिष्टयो नरां न शंसैः । असद्यथा न इन्द्रो वन्दनेष्ठास्तुरो न कर्म नयमान उक्था ॥

asāma yathā suṣakhāya ena svabhiṣṭayo narāṃ na śaṃsaiḥ | asadyathā na indro vandaneṣṭhāsturo na karma nayamāna ukthā ||

May we be, as it were, your valued friends, O Lord, and obtain our desires, like those (who gain their objects) by the praise of princes. May Indra, propitiated by our eulogies, be brought to the sacrifice by our hymns.

विष्पर्धसो नरां न शंसैरस्माकासदिन्द्रो वज्रहस्तः । मित्रायुवो न पूर्पतिं सुशिष्टौ मध्यायुव उप शिक्षन्ति यज्ञैः ॥

viṣpardhaso narāṃ na śaṃsairasmākāsadindro vajrahastaḥ | mitrāyuvo na pūrpatiṃ suśiṣṭau madhyāyuva upa śikṣanti yajñaiḥ ||

Emulous in commendation, like (those contending for the favour) of men, may Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, be equally (a friend) to us; like those who, desirous of his friendship, (conciliate) the lord of a city (ruling) with good government, so do our intermediate (representatives) propitiate (Indra) with sacrifices.

यज्ञो हि ष्मेन्द्रं कश्चिदृन्धञ्जुहुराणश्चिन्मनसा परियन् । तीर्थे नाच्छा तातृषाणमोको दीर्घो न सिध्रमा कृणोत्यध्वा ॥

yajño hi ṣmendraṃ kaścidṛndhañjuhurāṇaścinmanasā pariyan | tīrthe nācchā tātṛṣāṇamoko dīrgho na sidhramā kṛṇotyadhvā ||

One man propitiates Indra, augmenting (his vigour) by sacrifice; another, who is insincere, worships (him), with mind averted, (to worldly thoughts); (to the first he is) like a lake to a thirsty (pilgrim) near a sacred spot; (to the other) like a long road, which retards the end (of the journey).

मो षू ण इन्द्रात्र पृत्सु देवैरस्ति हि ष्मा ते शुष्मिन्नवयाः । महश्चिद्यस्य मीऴ्हुषो यव्या हविष्मतो मरुतो वन्दते गीः ॥

mo ṣū ṇa indrātra pṛtsu devairasti hi ṣmā te śuṣminnavayāḥ | mahaścidyasya mīḻhuṣo yavyā haviṣmato maruto vandate gīḥ ||

Indra, associated with the Maruts in battles (with the clouds), abandon us not; for a share of the offering is set apart, mighty one, for you, for whom, the shedder of rain and accepter of oblations, the worship is offered with oblations, whilst the hymn glorifies the Marutṣ

एष स्तोम इन्द्र तुभ्यमस्मे एतेन गातुं हरिवो विदो नः । आ नो ववृत्याः सुविताय देव विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम् ॥

eṣa stoma indra tubhyamasme etena gātuṃ harivo vido naḥ | ā no vavṛtyāḥ suvitāya deva vidyāmeṣaṃ vṛjanaṃ jīradānum ||

This hymn, Indra, is addressed to you. Lord of steeds, learn by it the way to our sacrifice, and come hither for our good, that we may thence obtain food, strength, and long life.
