[rv-1-163] • 13 श्लोकाः

यदक्रन्दः प्रथमं जायमान उद्यन्त्समुद्रादुत वा पुरीषात् । श्येनस्य पक्षा हरिणस्य बाहू उपस्तुत्यं महि जातं ते अर्वन् ॥

yadakrandaḥ prathamaṃ jāyamāna udyantsamudrāduta vā purīṣāt | śyenasya pakṣā hariṇasya bāhū upastutyaṃ mahi jātaṃ te arvan ||

Your great birth, O Horse, is to be glorified; whether first springing from the firmament or from the water inasmuchas you have neighed (auspiciously), for you have the wings of the falcon and the limbs of the deer.

यमेन दत्तं त्रित एनमायुनगिन्द्र एणं प्रथमो अध्यतिष्ठत् । गन्धर्वो अस्य रशनामगृभ्णात्सूरादश्वं वसवो निरतष्ट ॥

yamena dattaṃ trita enamāyunagindra eṇaṃ prathamo adhyatiṣṭhat | gandharvo asya raśanāmagṛbhṇātsūrādaśvaṃ vasavo nirataṣṭa ||

Trita harnessed the horse which was given by yama; Indra first mounted him, and gandharva seized his reins. Vasus, you fabricated the horse from the sun.

असि यमो अस्यादित्यो अर्वन्नसि त्रितो गुह्येन व्रतेन । असि सोमेन समया विपृक्त आहुस्ते त्रीणि दिवि बन्धनानि ॥

asi yamo asyādityo arvannasi trito guhyena vratena | asi somena samayā vipṛkta āhuste trīṇi divi bandhanāni ||

Your horse is Yama and you are Āditya; you are Trita by a mysterious act; you are associated with Soma. The sages have said there are three bindings of you in heaven.

त्रीणि त आहुर्दिवि बन्धनानि त्रीण्यप्सु त्रीण्यन्तः समुद्रे । उतेव मे वरुणश्छन्त्स्यर्वन्यत्रा त आहुः परमं जनित्रम् ॥

trīṇi ta āhurdivi bandhanāni trīṇyapsu trīṇyantaḥ samudre | uteva me varuṇaśchantsyarvanyatrā ta āhuḥ paramaṃ janitram ||

They have said that there are your bindings in heaven three upon earth; and three in the firmament. You declare to me, Horse, who are (one with) Varuṇa, that which they have called your most excellent birth.

इमा ते वाजिन्नवमार्जनानीमा शफानां सनितुर्निधाना । अत्रा ते भद्रा रशना अपश्यमृतस्य या अभिरक्षन्ति गोपाः ॥

imā te vājinnavamārjanānīmā śaphānāṃ saniturnidhānā | atrā te bhadrā raśanā apaśyamṛtasya yā abhirakṣanti gopāḥ ||

I have beheld, Horse, these your purifying (regions) these impressions of the feet of you who share in the sacrifice; and here your auspicious reins, which are the protectors of the rite that preserve it.

आत्मानं ते मनसारादजानामवो दिवा पतयन्तं पतंगम् । शिरो अपश्यं पथिभिः सुगेभिररेणुभिर्जेहमानं पतत्रि ॥

ātmānaṃ te manasārādajānāmavo divā patayantaṃ pataṃgam | śiro apaśyaṃ pathibhiḥ sugebhirareṇubhirjehamānaṃ patatri ||

I recognize in my mind your form afar off, going from (the earth) below, by way of heaven, to the sun. I behold your head soaring aloft, and mountain quickly by unobstructed paths, unsullied by dust.

अत्रा ते रूपमुत्तममपश्यं जिगीषमाणमिष आ पदे गोः । यदा ते मर्तो अनु भोगमानऴादिद्ग्रसिष्ठ ओषधीरजीगः ॥

atrā te rūpamuttamamapaśyaṃ jigīṣamāṇamiṣa ā pade goḥ | yadā te marto anu bhogamānaḻādidgrasiṣṭha oṣadhīrajīgaḥ ||

I behold your most excellent form coming eagerly to (receive) your food in your (holy) plural ce of earth; when your attendant brings you nigh to the enjoyment (of the provender), therefore gredy, you devour the fodder.

अनु त्वा रथो अनु मर्यो अर्वन्ननु गावोऽनु भगः कनीनाम् । अनु व्रातासस्तव सख्यमीयुरनु देवा ममिरे वीर्यं ते ॥

anu tvā ratho anu maryo arvannanu gāvo'nu bhagaḥ kanīnām | anu vrātāsastava sakhyamīyuranu devā mamire vīryaṃ te ||

The car follows you, O Horse; men attend you; cattle follow you; the loveliness of maidens (waits) upon you; troops of demi-gods following you have sought your friendship; the gods themselves have been admirers of your vigour

हिरण्यशृङ्गोऽयो अस्य पादा मनोजवा अवर इन्द्र आसीत् । देवा इदस्य हविरद्यमायन्यो अर्वन्तं प्रथमो अध्यतिष्ठत् ॥

hiraṇyaśṛṅgo'yo asya pādā manojavā avara indra āsīt | devā idasya haviradyamāyanyo arvantaṃ prathamo adhyatiṣṭhat ||

His mane is of gold; his feet are of bronze; and fleet as thought, Indra is his inferior (in speed). The gods have come to partake ofhis (being offered as) oblation; the first who mounted the horse was Indra.

ईर्मान्तासः सिलिकमध्यमासः सं शूरणासो दिव्यासो अत्याः । हंसा इव श्रेणिशो यतन्ते यदाक्षिषुर्दिव्यमज्ममश्वाः ॥

īrmāntāsaḥ silikamadhyamāsaḥ saṃ śūraṇāso divyāso atyāḥ | haṃsā iva śreṇiśo yatante yadākṣiṣurdivyamajmamaśvāḥ ||

The full-haunched, slender-waistd, high-spirited, and celestial coursers (of the sun), gallop along like swans in rows, when the horses spread along the heavenly path.

तव शरीरं पतयिष्ण्वर्वन्तव चित्तं वात इव ध्रजीमान् । तव शृङ्गाणि विष्ठिता पुरुत्रारण्येषु जर्भुराणा चरन्ति ॥

tava śarīraṃ patayiṣṇvarvantava cittaṃ vāta iva dhrajīmān | tava śṛṅgāṇi viṣṭhitā purutrāraṇyeṣu jarbhurāṇā caranti ||

Your body, horse, is made for motion; your mind is rapid (in intention) as the wind; the hairs (of your mane) are tossed in manifold directions; and spread beautiful in the forests.

उप प्रागाच्छसनं वाज्यर्वा देवद्रीचा मनसा दीध्यानः । अजः पुरो नीयते नाभिरस्यानु पश्चात्कवयो यन्ति रेभाः ॥

upa prāgācchasanaṃ vājyarvā devadrīcā manasā dīdhyānaḥ | ajaḥ puro nīyate nābhirasyānu paścātkavayo yanti rebhāḥ ||

The swift horse approaches the plural ce of immolation, meditating with mind intent upon the gods; the goat bound to him is led before him; after him follow the priests and the singers.

उप प्रागात्परमं यत्सधस्थमर्वाँ अच्छा पितरं मातरं च । अद्या देवाञ्जुष्टतमो हि गम्या अथा शास्ते दाशुषे वार्याणि ॥

upa prāgātparamaṃ yatsadhasthamarvā~ acchā pitaraṃ mātaraṃ ca | adyā devāñjuṣṭatamo hi gamyā athā śāste dāśuṣe vāryāṇi ||

The horse proceeds to that assembly which is most excellent; to the presence of his father and his mother, (heaven and earth). Go, (Horse), today rejoicing to the gods, that (the sacrifice) may yield blessings to the donor.
