[rv-1-162] • 22 श्लोकाः

मा नो मित्रो वरुणो अर्यमायुरिन्द्र ऋभुक्षा मरुतः परि ख्यन् । यद्वाजिनो देवजातस्य सप्तेः प्रवक्ष्यामो विदथे वीर्याणि ॥

mā no mitro varuṇo aryamāyurindra ṛbhukṣā marutaḥ pari khyan | yadvājino devajātasya sapteḥ pravakṣyāmo vidathe vīryāṇi ||

Let neither Mitra nor Varuṇa, Aryaman, Āyu, Indra, Ṛbhukṣin,nor the Maruts, censure us; when we proclaim in the sacrifice the virtus of the swift horse sprung from the gods.

यन्निर्णिजा रेक्णसा प्रावृतस्य रातिं गृभीतां मुखतो नयन्ति । सुप्राङजो मेम्यद्विश्वरूप इन्द्रापूष्णोः प्रियमप्येति पाथः ॥

yannirṇijā rekṇasā prāvṛtasya rātiṃ gṛbhītāṃ mukhato nayanti | suprāṅajo memyadviśvarūpa indrāpūṣṇoḥ priyamapyeti pāthaḥ ||

When they, (the priests), bring the prepared offering to the presence (of the horse), who has been bathed and decorated with rich (trappings), the various-coloured goat going before him, bleating, becomes an acceptable offering to Indra and Pūṣan.

एष च्छागः पुरो अश्वेन वाजिना पूष्णो भागो नीयते विश्वदेव्यः । अभिप्रियं यत्पुरोऴाशमर्वता त्वष्टेदेनं सौश्रवसाय जिन्वति ॥

eṣa cchāgaḥ puro aśvena vājinā pūṣṇo bhāgo nīyate viśvadevyaḥ | abhipriyaṃ yatpuroḻāśamarvatā tvaṣṭedenaṃ sauśravasāya jinvati ||

This goat, the portion of Pu+ṣan fit for all the gods, is brought first with the fleet courser, to that Tvaṣṭā may prepare him along with the horse, as an acceptable preliminary offering for the (sacrificial) food.

यद्धविष्यमृतुशो देवयानं त्रिर्मानुषाः पर्यश्वं नयन्ति । अत्रा पूष्णः प्रथमो भाग एति यज्ञं देवेभ्यः प्रतिवेदयन्नजः ॥

yaddhaviṣyamṛtuśo devayānaṃ trirmānuṣāḥ paryaśvaṃ nayanti | atrā pūṣṇaḥ prathamo bhāga eti yajñaṃ devebhyaḥ prativedayannajaḥ ||

When the priests at the season (of the ceremony), lead forth the horse, the offering devoted to the gods, thrice round (the sacrificial fire); then the goat, the portion of Pūṣan, goes first, announcing the sacrificer to the gods.

होताध्वर्युरावया अग्निमिन्धो ग्रावग्राभ उत शंस्ता सुविप्रः । तेन यज्ञेन स्वरंकृतेन स्विष्टेन वक्षणा आ पृणध्वम् ॥

hotādhvaryurāvayā agnimindho grāvagrābha uta śaṃstā suvipraḥ | tena yajñena svaraṃkṛtena sviṣṭena vakṣaṇā ā pṛṇadhvam ||

The invoker of the gods, the minister of the rite, the offerer of the oblation, the kindler of the fire, the bruiser of the Soma, the director of the ceremony, the saage (superintendent of the whole); do you replenish the rivers by this well-ordered, well-conducted, sacrifice.

यूपव्रस्का उत ये यूपवाहाश्चषालं ये अश्वयूपाय तक्षति । ये चार्वते पचनं सम्भरन्त्युतो तेषामभिगूर्तिर्न इन्वतु ॥

yūpavraskā uta ye yūpavāhāścaṣālaṃ ye aśvayūpāya takṣati | ye cārvate pacanaṃ sambharantyuto teṣāmabhigūrtirna invatu ||

Whether they be those who cut the (sacrificial) post, or those who bear the post, or those who fasten the rings on the top of the post, to which the horse (is bound); or those who prepare the vessels in which the food of the horse is dressed; let the exertions of them all fulfil our expectation.

उप प्रागात्सुमन्मेऽधायि मन्म देवानामाशा उप वीतपृष्ठः । अन्वेनं विप्रा ऋषयो मदन्ति देवानां पुष्टे चकृमा सुबन्धुम् ॥

upa prāgātsumanme'dhāyi manma devānāmāśā upa vītapṛṣṭhaḥ | anvenaṃ viprā ṛṣayo madanti devānāṃ puṣṭe cakṛmā subandhum ||

May my desire be of itself accomplished, such as it has been entertained, that the smooth-backed steed should come to (gratify) the expectations of the gods; we have made him well-secured for the nutriment of the gods; let the wise saints now rejoice.

यद्वाजिनो दाम संदानमर्वतो या शीर्षण्या रशना रज्जुरस्य । यद्वा घास्य प्रभृतमास्ये तृणं सर्वा ता ते अपि देवेष्वस्तु ॥

yadvājino dāma saṃdānamarvato yā śīrṣaṇyā raśanā rajjurasya | yadvā ghāsya prabhṛtamāsye tṛṇaṃ sarvā tā te api deveṣvastu ||

May the halter and the heel-ropes of the fleet courser, and the head-ropes, the girths, and any other (part of the harness); and the grass that has been put into his mouth; may all these be with you, (horse), amongst the gods.

यदश्वस्य क्रविषो मक्षिकाश यद्वा स्वरौ स्वधितौ रिप्तमस्ति । यद्धस्तयोः शमितुर्यन्नखेषु सर्वा ता ते अपि देवेष्वस्तु ॥

yadaśvasya kraviṣo makṣikāśa yadvā svarau svadhitau riptamasti | yaddhastayoḥ śamituryannakheṣu sarvā tā te api deveṣvastu ||

Whatever the flies may eat of the raw flesh of the horse; whatever (grease) is smeared upon the brush or upon the axe; (what is smeared) upon the hands or the nails of the immolator, may all this be with you, (horse), amongst the gods.

यदूवध्यमुदरस्यापवाति य आमस्य क्रविषो गन्धो अस्ति । सुकृता तच्छमितारः कृण्वन्तूत मेधं शृतपाकं पचन्तु ॥

yadūvadhyamudarasyāpavāti ya āmasya kraviṣo gandho asti | sukṛtā tacchamitāraḥ kṛṇvantūta medhaṃ śṛtapākaṃ pacantu ||

Whatever undigested grass fall from this belly; whatever particle of raw flesh may remain; let the immolators make the whole free from defect, and so cook the pure (offering) that it may be perfectly dressed.

यत्ते गात्रादग्निना पच्यमानादभि शूलं निहतस्यावधावति । मा तद्भूम्यामा श्रिषन्मा तृणेषु देवेभ्यस्तदुशद्भ्यो रातमस्तु ॥

yatte gātrādagninā pacyamānādabhi śūlaṃ nihatasyāvadhāvati | mā tadbhūmyāmā śriṣanmā tṛṇeṣu devebhyastaduśadbhyo rātamastu ||

Whatever (portion) of your slaughtered (body) fall from your carcass when it is being roasted by the fire, (escaping) from the spit; let it not be left on the ground,nor on the (sacred) grass, but let it (all) be given to the longing gods.

ये वाजिनं परिपश्यन्ति पक्वं य ईमाहुः सुरभिर्निर्हरेति । ये चार्वतो मांसभिक्षामुपासत उतो तेषामभिगूर्तिर्न इन्वतु ॥

ye vājinaṃ paripaśyanti pakvaṃ ya īmāhuḥ surabhirnirhareti | ye cārvato māṃsabhikṣāmupāsata uto teṣāmabhigūrtirna invatu ||

Let their exertions be for our good who watch the cooking of the horse; who say, it is fragrant; therefore give us some; who solicit the flesh of the horse as alms.

यन्नीक्षणं माँस्पचन्या उखाया या पात्राणि यूष्ण आसेचनानि । ऊष्मण्यापिधाना चरूणामङ्काः सूनाः परि भूषन्त्यश्वम् ॥

yannīkṣaṇaṃ mā~spacanyā ukhāyā yā pātrāṇi yūṣṇa āsecanāni | ūṣmaṇyāpidhānā carūṇāmaṅkāḥ sūnāḥ pari bhūṣantyaśvam ||

The stick that is dipped into the cauldron in which the flesh is boiled; the vessels that distribute the broth; the covers of the dishes, the skewers, the knives, all do honour (to the horse).

निक्रमणं निषदनं विवर्तनं यच्च पड्बीशमर्वतः । यच्च पपौ यच्च घासिं जघास सर्वा ता ते अपि देवेष्वस्तु ॥

nikramaṇaṃ niṣadanaṃ vivartanaṃ yacca paḍbīśamarvataḥ | yacca papau yacca ghāsiṃ jaghāsa sarvā tā te api deveṣvastu ||

May the plural ce of going forth, of tarrying, of rolling on the ground; the foot-fastening of the horse, (the water) that he has drunk, the grass that he has eaten; may all these be thine among the gods.

मा त्वाग्निर्ध्वनयीद्धूमगन्धिर्मोखा भ्राजन्त्यभि विक्त जघ्रिः । इष्टं वीतमभिगूर्तं वषट्कृतं तं देवासः प्रति गृभ्णन्त्यश्वम् ॥

mā tvāgnirdhvanayīddhūmagandhirmokhā bhrājantyabhi vikta jaghriḥ | iṣṭaṃ vītamabhigūrtaṃ vaṣaṭkṛtaṃ taṃ devāsaḥ prati gṛbhṇantyaśvam ||

Let not smoke-smelling Agni cause you, (horse), to utter sound; let not the glowing cauldron, odoriferous (with its contents), be overturned; the gods accept a horse that has been selected (for sacrifice); that has been led (round the fire); that has been devoutly offered, and has been consecrated by (the exclamation), vaṣat.

यदश्वाय वास उपस्तृणन्त्यधीवासं या हिरण्यान्यस्मै । संदानमर्वन्तं पड्बीशं प्रिया देवेष्वा यामयन्ति ॥

yadaśvāya vāsa upastṛṇantyadhīvāsaṃ yā hiraṇyānyasmai | saṃdānamarvantaṃ paḍbīśaṃ priyā deveṣvā yāmayanti ||

The cloth which they spread as a covering for the horse; the golden (trappings with which they decorate him), the head-ropes, the foot-ropes, all these they offer as acceptable to the gods.

यत्ते सादे महसा शूकृतस्य पार्ष्ण्या वा कशया वा तुतोद । स्रुचेव ता हविषो अध्वरेषु सर्वा ता ते ब्रह्मणा सूदयामि ॥

yatte sāde mahasā śūkṛtasya pārṣṇyā vā kaśayā vā tutoda | sruceva tā haviṣo adhvareṣu sarvā tā te brahmaṇā sūdayāmi ||

Whoever has goaded you in your paces, either with heel or with whip, whilst nothing in your strength-- all these (vexations) I pour out with holy prayers, as oblation with the ladle.

चतुस्त्रिंशद्वाजिनो देवबन्धोर्वङ्क्रीरश्वस्य स्वधितिः समेति । अच्छिद्रा गात्रा वयुना कृणोत परुष्परुरनुघुष्या वि शस्त ॥

catustriṃśadvājino devabandhorvaṅkrīraśvasya svadhitiḥ sameti | acchidrā gātrā vayunā kṛṇota paruṣparuranughuṣyā vi śasta ||

The axe penetrates the thirty-four ribs of the swift horse; the beloved of the gods, (the immolators), cut up (the horse) with skill, so that the limbs may be unperforated, and recapitulating joint by joint.

एकस्त्वष्टुरश्वस्या विशस्ता द्वा यन्तारा भवतस्तथ ऋतुः । या ते गात्राणामृतुथा कृणोमि ताता पिण्डानां प्र जुहोम्यग्नौ ॥

ekastvaṣṭuraśvasyā viśastā dvā yantārā bhavatastatha ṛtuḥ | yā te gātrāṇāmṛtuthā kṛṇomi tātā piṇḍānāṃ pra juhomyagnau ||

There is one immolator of the radiant horse, which is Time; there are two that hold him fast; such of your limbs as I cut up in due season, I offer them, made into balls (of meat) upon the fire.

मा त्वा तपत्प्रिय आत्मापियन्तं मा स्वधितिस्तन्व आ तिष्ठिपत्ते । मा ते गृध्नुरविशस्तातिहाय छिद्रा गात्राण्यसिना मिथू कः ॥

mā tvā tapatpriya ātmāpiyantaṃ mā svadhitistanva ā tiṣṭhipatte | mā te gṛdhnuraviśastātihāya chidrā gātrāṇyasinā mithū kaḥ ||

Let not your precious body grieve you, who are going verily (to the gods); let not the axe linger in your body; let not the greedy and unskilful (immolator) missing the members, mangle your limbs needlessly with his knife.

न वा उ एतन्म्रियसे न रिष्यसि देवाँ इदेषि पथिभिः सुगेभिः । हरी ते युञ्जा पृषती अभूतामुपास्थाद्वाजी धुरि रासभस्य ॥

na vā u etanmriyase na riṣyasi devā~ ideṣi pathibhiḥ sugebhiḥ | harī te yuñjā pṛṣatī abhūtāmupāsthādvājī dhuri rāsabhasya ||

Verily at this moment you do not die; nor are you harmed; for you go by auspicious paths to the gods. The horses of Indra, the steeds of the Maruts shall be yoked (to their ears), and a courser shall be plural ced in the shaft of the ass of the Aśvins (to bear you to heaven).

सुगव्यं नो वाजी स्वश्व्यं पुंसः पुत्राँ उत विश्वापुषं रयिम् । अनागास्त्वं नो अदितिः कृणोतु क्षत्रं नो अश्वो वनतां हविष्मान् ॥

sugavyaṃ no vājī svaśvyaṃ puṃsaḥ putrā~ uta viśvāpuṣaṃ rayim | anāgāstvaṃ no aditiḥ kṛṇotu kṣatraṃ no aśvo vanatāṃ haviṣmān ||

May this horse bring to us all-sustaining wealth, with abundance of cows of excellent horses, and of male offspring; may the spirited steed bring us exemption from wickedness; may this horse, offered in oblation, procure for us bodily vigour.
