ऋग्वेद 1.141 (श्लोक 1) - Project अर्थ (Artha)

बऴित्था तद्वपुषे धायि दर्शतं देवस्य भर्गः सहसो यतो जनि । यदीमुप ह्वरते साधते मतिॠतस्य धेना अनयन्त सस्रुतः ॥

baḻitthā tadvapuṣe dhāyi darśataṃ devasya bhargaḥ sahaso yato jani | yadīmupa hvarate sādhate matiṝtasya dhenā anayanta sasrutaḥ ||

Verily, that visible radiance of the divine (Agni) has been so apprehended (by all, that it may be) for (the support of) the body, for which end it has been genitive rated by (bodily) strength; and that my mind may apprehend and apply (that radiance), they address the sacred prayers associated with oblations (to Agni).

पृक्षो वपुः पितुमान्नित्य आ शये द्वितीयमा सप्तशिवासु मातृषु । तृतीयमस्य वृषभस्य दोहसे दशप्रमतिं जनयन्त योषणः ॥

pṛkṣo vapuḥ pitumānnitya ā śaye dvitīyamā saptaśivāsu mātṛṣu | tṛtīyamasya vṛṣabhasya dohase daśapramatiṃ janayanta yoṣaṇaḥ ||

First, he reposes (on the earth) as the digestive (faculty), the embodied, the accepter of food, the eternal secondly, (he dwells) among the seven auspicious mothers (of fertility); thirdly, the associated (regions) genitive rate him, delighting in the ten (quarters) of space, for the sake of milking this showerer (of rain).

निर्यदीं बुध्नान्महिषस्य वर्पस ईशानासः शवसा क्रन्त सूरयः । यदीमनु प्रदिवो मध्व आधवे गुहा सन्तं मातरिश्वा मथायति ॥

niryadīṃ budhnānmahiṣasya varpasa īśānāsaḥ śavasā kranta sūrayaḥ | yadīmanu pradivo madhva ādhave guhā santaṃ mātariśvā mathāyati ||

As powerful priests extract by force (of prayer) this Agni from his primitive seat, (for the evolution) of his mighty form; as the wind arouses him lurking in the hiding-plural ce (of the altar), for the sake of offering oblations now as of old.

प्र यत्पितुः परमान्नीयते पर्या पृक्षुधो वीरुधो दंसु रोहति । उभा यदस्य जनुषं यदिन्वत आदिद्यविष्ठो अभवद्घृणा शुचिः ॥

pra yatpituḥ paramānnīyate paryā pṛkṣudho vīrudho daṃsu rohati | ubhā yadasya januṣaṃ yadinvata ādidyaviṣṭho abhavadghṛṇā śuciḥ ||

As from the excellence of the nutritious (offering) be, (Agni), is brought forth and the consumable branches rise amidst (the flames); and as both (the instrumental tutor of the rite and the priest) combine for his genitive ration, therefore has he been genitive rated, pure, youthful, and radiant.

आदिन्मातॄराविशद्यास्वा शुचिरहिंस्यमान उर्विया वि वावृधे । अनु यत्पूर्वा अरुहत्सनाजुवो नि नव्यसीष्ववरासु धावते ॥

ādinmātṝrāviśadyāsvā śucirahiṃsyamāna urviyā vi vāvṛdhe | anu yatpūrvā aruhatsanājuvo ni navyasīṣvavarāsu dhāvate ||

Therefore has the brilliant Agni entered the maternal (quarters of space), amidst which pure, and unharmed, he had evolved into magnitude, so that he mounted (the bushes) plural ced before him, as he had (consumed others) prior to them, and runs rapidly among the more recent and inferior branches.

आदिद्धोतारं वृणते दिविष्टिषु भगमिव पपृचानास ऋञ्जते । देवान्यत्क्रत्वा मज्मना पुरुष्टुतो मर्तं शंसं विश्वधा वेति धायसे ॥

ādiddhotāraṃ vṛṇate diviṣṭiṣu bhagamiva papṛcānāsa ṛñjate | devānyatkratvā majmanā puruṣṭuto martaṃ śaṃsaṃ viśvadhā veti dhāyase ||

Pious worshippers then adore the invoker (of the gods), for (the propitiation of) the dwellers in heaven, as (such men) adore a powerful prince, since the many-lauded, and all upholding (Agni) knows how by (holy) act and (bodily) strength to bring together the gods and their mortal worshipper for the sake of obtaining (mutual) sustenance.

वि यदस्थाद्यजतो वातचोदितो ह्वारो न वक्वा जरणा अनाकृतः । तस्य पत्मन्दक्षुषः कृष्णजंहसः शुचिजन्मनो रज आ व्यध्वनः ॥

vi yadasthādyajato vātacodito hvāro na vakvā jaraṇā anākṛtaḥ | tasya patmandakṣuṣaḥ kṛṣṇajaṃhasaḥ śucijanmano raja ā vyadhvanaḥ ||

Since the adorable (Agni), impelled by the wind, spreads in various directions, like an insincere and unrestrained chatterer, (who utters indiscriminate) praises, therefore the world is assiduous in the worship of him, the consumer of all, whose way is dark, who is pure of birth and follows various paths.

रथो न यातः शिक्वभिः कृतो द्यामङ्गेभिररुषेभिरीयते । आदस्य ते कृष्णासो दक्षि सूरयः शूरस्येव त्वेषथादीषते वयः ॥

ratho na yātaḥ śikvabhiḥ kṛto dyāmaṅgebhiraruṣebhirīyate | ādasya te kṛṣṇāso dakṣi sūrayaḥ śūrasyeva tveṣathādīṣate vayaḥ ||

Like a chariot drawn by ropes, Agni, set in movement by his own revolving members (his flames), proceeds to the heavens; the paths he traverses are blackened by smoke, as he consumes (the fuel), and (beasts and) birds fly from his radiance as (enemies fly from the prowess) of a hero.

त्वया ह्यग्ने वरुणो धृतव्रतो मित्रः शाशद्रे अर्यमा सुदानवः । यत्सीमनु क्रतुना विश्वथा विभुररान्न नेमिः परिभूरजायथाः ॥

tvayā hyagne varuṇo dhṛtavrato mitraḥ śāśadre aryamā sudānavaḥ | yatsīmanu kratunā viśvathā vibhurarānna nemiḥ paribhūrajāyathāḥ ||

By you, Agni; Varuṇa, observant of his duties and Mitra and Aryaman, bountiful divinities, are animated, so that yo have been born comprehending them all universally in all (their) functions, and encompassing (them all) as the circumference (encompasses) the spokes (of a wheel).

त्वमग्ने शशमानाय सुन्वते रत्नं यविष्ठ देवतातिमिन्वसि । तं त्वा नु नव्यं सहसो युवन्वयं भगं न कारे महिरत्न धीमहि ॥

tvamagne śaśamānāya sunvate ratnaṃ yaviṣṭha devatātiminvasi | taṃ tvā nu navyaṃ sahaso yuvanvayaṃ bhagaṃ na kāre mahiratna dhīmahi ||

Most youthful Agni, for the good of him who praises you and offers you libations, you make the precious (offering) acceptable to the gods; new-born of strength we glorify you who are to be lauded; to whom rich offerings (are to be presented); (we glorify you) in (our) hymn as (men eulogize) a powerful prince.

अस्मे रयिं न स्वर्थं दमूनसं भगं दक्षं न पपृचासि धर्णसिम् । रश्मीँरिव यो यमति जन्मनी उभे देवानां शंसमृत आ च सुक्रतुः ॥

asme rayiṃ na svarthaṃ damūnasaṃ bhagaṃ dakṣaṃ na papṛcāsi dharṇasim | raśmī~riva yo yamati janmanī ubhe devānāṃ śaṃsamṛta ā ca sukratuḥ ||

In like manner as you confer upon us riches, (so you bestow upon us) a well-disposed, docile, and energetic (son); the receptacle (of learning and other merits), one who is the performer of holy rites, Agni, who regulates as it were his own rays, (and the condition) both (his) births, (or heaven and earth), he regulates at (our) sacrifice the adoration of the gods.

उत नः सुद्योत्मा जीराश्वो होता मन्द्रः शृणवच्चन्द्ररथः । स नो नेषन्नेषतमैरमूरोऽग्निर्वामं सुवितं वस्यो अच्छ ॥

uta naḥ sudyotmā jīrāśvo hotā mandraḥ śṛṇavaccandrarathaḥ | sa no neṣanneṣatamairamūro'gnirvāmaṃ suvitaṃ vasyo accha ||

May he who is one with light, who has fleet horses, the invoker (of the gods), full of joy, and borne in a golden chariot, listen to us; may that irresistible, yet plural cable Agni, conduct us, by the most efficacious (means), to that desirable and accessible (heaven).

अस्ताव्यग्निः शिमीवद्भिरर्कैः साम्राज्याय प्रतरं दधानः । अमी च ये मघवानो वयं च मिहं न सूरो अति निष्टतन्युः ॥

astāvyagniḥ śimīvadbhirarkaiḥ sāmrājyāya prataraṃ dadhānaḥ | amī ca ye maghavāno vayaṃ ca mihaṃ na sūro ati niṣṭatanyuḥ ||

Agni, possessing eminent (fitness) for supreme sovereignty, has been glorified by us, with holy rites (śimī śaktiḥ: Nirukta 2.1.24), and with hymns. Let all who are presen1, as well as we ourselves, enriched (by his favour), shout aloud (the praise of Agni), as (loudly as) the sun (causes) the rain-cloud (to thunder).
