[rv-1-123] • 13 श्लोकाः

पृथू रथो दक्षिणाया अयोज्यैनं देवासो अमृतासो अस्थुः । कृष्णादुदस्थादर्या विहायाश्चिकित्सन्ती मानुषाय क्षयाय ॥

pṛthū ratho dakṣiṇāyā ayojyainaṃ devāso amṛtāso asthuḥ | kṛṣṇādudasthādaryā vihāyāścikitsantī mānuṣāya kṣayāya ||

The spacious chariot of the graceful (dawn) has been harnessed; the immortal gods have ascended it; the noble and all-pervading Uṣā has risen up from the darkness, bringing health to human habitations.

पूर्वा विश्वस्माद्भुवनादबोधि जयन्ती वाजं बृहती सनुत्री । उच्चा व्यख्यद्युवतिः पुनर्भूरोषा अगन्प्रथमा पूर्वहूतौ ॥

pūrvā viśvasmādbhuvanādabodhi jayantī vājaṃ bṛhatī sanutrī | uccā vyakhyadyuvatiḥ punarbhūroṣā aganprathamā pūrvahūtau ||

First of all the world is she awake, triumphing over transitory (darkness); the mighty, the giver (of light) from on high, she beholds (all things); ever youthful, ever reviving, she comes first to the invocation.

यदद्य भागं विभजासि नृभ्य उषो देवि मर्त्यत्रा सुजाते । देवो नो अत्र सविता दमूना अनागसो वोचति सूर्याय ॥

yadadya bhāgaṃ vibhajāsi nṛbhya uṣo devi martyatrā sujāte | devo no atra savitā damūnā anāgaso vocati sūryāya ||

Well-born and divine Uṣā, who are the protectress of mortals; whatever share (of light) you apportion today to men, may the radiant Savitā bedisposed (to confirm) the gift, and declar us free from sin; so that (he) the sun (may come to our sacrificial hall).

गृहंगृहमहना यात्यच्छा दिवेदिवे अधि नामा दधाना । सिषासन्ती द्योतना शश्वदागादग्रमग्रमिद्भजते वसूनाम् ॥

gṛhaṃgṛhamahanā yātyacchā divedive adhi nāmā dadhānā | siṣāsantī dyotanā śaśvadāgādagramagramidbhajate vasūnām ||

Ahana, charged with downward-bending (light), goes daily from house to house; she comes, perpetually diffusing light, and desirous of bestowing (benefits), and accepts the choicest portions of (the sacrificial) treasures.

भगस्य स्वसा वरुणस्य जामिरुषः सूनृते प्रथमा जरस्व । पश्चा स दघ्या यो अघस्य धाता जयेम तं दक्षिणया रथेन ॥

bhagasya svasā varuṇasya jāmiruṣaḥ sūnṛte prathamā jarasva | paścā sa daghyā yo aghasya dhātā jayema taṃ dakṣiṇayā rathena ||

Uṣā, endowed with truth, who are the sister of Bhaga, the sister of Varuṇa, be you hymned first (of the gods); then let the worker of iniquity depart, for we shall overcome him with our chariot, through your assistance.

उदीरतां सूनृता उत्पुरंधीरुदग्नयः शुशुचानासो अस्थुः । स्पार्हा वसूनि तमसापगूऴ्हाविष्कृण्वन्त्युषसो विभातीः ॥

udīratāṃ sūnṛtā utpuraṃdhīrudagnayaḥ śuśucānāso asthuḥ | spārhā vasūni tamasāpagūḻhāviṣkṛṇvantyuṣaso vibhātīḥ ||

Let words of truth be spoken; let works of wisdom (be performed); let the blazing fires rise up, so that the many radiant Uṣā may make manifest the desirable treasures hidden by the darkness.

अपान्यदेत्यभ्यन्यदेति विषुरूपे अहनी सं चरेते । परिक्षितोस्तमो अन्या गुहाकरद्यौदुषाः शोशुचता रथेन ॥

apānyadetyabhyanyadeti viṣurūpe ahanī saṃ carete | parikṣitostamo anyā guhākaradyauduṣāḥ śośucatā rathena ||

The twofold day proceeds unseparated; one (part going) forward, one backward; one of these two alternating (periods) effects the concealment (of things); the dawn illumines them with her radiant chariot.

सदृशीरद्य सदृशीरिदु श्वो दीर्घं सचन्ते वरुणस्य धाम । अनवद्यास्त्रिंशतं योजनान्येकैका क्रतुं परि यन्ति सद्यः ॥

sadṛśīradya sadṛśīridu śvo dīrghaṃ sacante varuṇasya dhāma | anavadyāstriṃśataṃ yojanānyekaikā kratuṃ pari yanti sadyaḥ ||

The same today, the same tomorrow, the irreproachable (dawn) precede the distant course of Varuṇa by thirtyyojanas, and each in succession revolves in its (appointed) office.

जानत्यह्नः प्रथमस्य नाम शुक्रा कृष्णादजनिष्ट श्वितीची । ऋतस्य योषा न मिनाति धामाहरहर्निष्कृतमाचरन्ती ॥

jānatyahnaḥ prathamasya nāma śukrā kṛṣṇādajaniṣṭa śvitīcī | ṛtasya yoṣā na mināti dhāmāharaharniṣkṛtamācarantī ||

The self-illumined dawn, announcing the declination of the first (portion) of the day, is born white-shining out of the gloom; cleansing (with the radiance) of the sun, she impairs not his splendour, but daily adds embellishment (to his lustre).

कन्येव तन्वा शाशदानाँ एषि देवि देवमियक्षमाणम् । संस्मयमाना युवतिः पुरस्तादाविर्वक्षांसि कृणुषे विभाती ॥

kanyeva tanvā śāśadānā~ eṣi devi devamiyakṣamāṇam | saṃsmayamānā yuvatiḥ purastādāvirvakṣāṃsi kṛṇuṣe vibhātī ||

Goddess, manifest in person n like a maiden, you go to the resplendent and munificent (sun), and, like a youthful bride (beforeher husband), you uncover, smiling, yor bosom in his presence.

सुसंकाशा मातृमृष्टेव योषाविस्तन्वं कृणुषे दृशे कम् । भद्रा त्वमुषो वितरं व्युच्छ न तत्ते अन्या उषसो नशन्त ॥

susaṃkāśā mātṛmṛṣṭeva yoṣāvistanvaṃ kṛṇuṣe dṛśe kam | bhadrā tvamuṣo vitaraṃ vyuccha na tatte anyā uṣaso naśanta ||

Radiant as a bride decorated by her mother, you willingly display your person n to the view. Do you, auspicious Uṣā, remove the investing (gloom), for, other dawns than you do not disperse it.

अश्वावतीर्गोमतीर्विश्ववारा यतमाना रश्मिभिः सूर्यस्य । परा च यन्ति पुनरा च यन्ति भद्रा नाम वहमाना उषासः ॥

aśvāvatīrgomatīrviśvavārā yatamānā raśmibhiḥ sūryasya | parā ca yanti punarā ca yanti bhadrā nāma vahamānā uṣāsaḥ ||

Possessed of horses, possessed of cows, existing through all time, vying with the rays of the sun (in dissipating darkness), auspicious dawns, sending down benefits (on mankind), pass away and again return.

ऋतस्य रश्मिमनुयच्छमाना भद्रम्भद्रं क्रतुमस्मासु धेहि । उषो नो अद्य सुहवा व्युच्छास्मासु रायो मघवत्सु च स्युः ॥

ṛtasya raśmimanuyacchamānā bhadrambhadraṃ kratumasmāsu dhehi | uṣo no adya suhavā vyucchāsmāsu rāyo maghavatsu ca syuḥ ||

Co-operating with the rays of the true (sun), confirm in us every propitious act; earnestly invoked byus today, disperse, Uṣā, (the darkness), that wealth may devolve upon us, (already) affluent (in sacrificial treasures).
