ऋग्वेद 1.121 (श्लोक 1) - Project अर्थ (Artha)

कदित्था नॄँ: पात्रं देवयतां श्रवद्गिरो अङ्गिरसां तुरण्यन् । प्र यदानड्विश आ हर्म्यस्योरु क्रंसते अध्वरे यजत्रः ॥

kaditthā nṝ~: pātraṃ devayatāṃ śravadgiro aṅgirasāṃ turaṇyan | pra yadānaḍviśa ā harmyasyoru kraṃsate adhvare yajatraḥ ||

When willIndra, the protector of men and granter of riches, listen to the praises thus (recited) of the Aṅgirasas, who are devoted to the gods? When he perceives the ministers of the master of the mansion, and is to be the object of worship in the sacrifice, he greatly exults.

स्तम्भीद्ध द्यां स धरुणं प्रुषायदृभुर्वाजाय द्रविणं नरो गोः । अनु स्वजां महिषश्चक्षत व्रां मेनामश्वस्य परि मातरं गोः ॥

stambhīddha dyāṃ sa dharuṇaṃ pruṣāyadṛbhurvājāya draviṇaṃ naro goḥ | anu svajāṃ mahiṣaścakṣata vrāṃ menāmaśvasya pari mātaraṃ goḥ ||

He verily upholds the heaven; he, the brilliant, the leader of the (stolen) herd, pours forth the flowing (water), for the sake of food; the mighty Indra manifests himself after his own daughter (the dawn); he made the feminine le of the horse unnaturally the mother of the cow.

नक्षद्धवमरुणीः पूर्व्यं राट् तुरो विशामङ्गिरसामनु द्यून् । तक्षद्वज्रं नियुतं तस्तम्भद्द्यां चतुष्पदे नर्याय द्विपादे ॥

nakṣaddhavamaruṇīḥ pūrvyaṃ rāṭ turo viśāmaṅgirasāmanu dyūn | takṣadvajraṃ niyutaṃ tastambhaddyāṃ catuṣpade naryāya dvipāde ||

May he, illuminating the purple (dawn), listen to the invocation (addressed to him) of old, daily besowing wealth upon the race of Aṅgiras; he has sharpened his fatal shaft; he has supported the heaven for the good of men, of quadrupeds, andbipeds.

अस्य मदे स्वर्यं दा ऋतायापीवृतमुस्रियाणामनीकम् । यद्ध प्रसर्गे त्रिककुम्निवर्तदप द्रुहो मानुषस्य दुरो वः ॥

asya made svaryaṃ dā ṛtāyāpīvṛtamusriyāṇāmanīkam | yaddha prasarge trikakumnivartadapa druho mānuṣasya duro vaḥ ||

In the exhilaration of the Soma, you have restored the celebrated herd of cattle, hidden (in the cave), for the sake of sacrifice, (to the Aṅgirasas); when, Indra, the threefold crest engages in combat, he opens the doors of the tyrannical descendants of Manu

तुभ्यं पयो यत्पितरावनीतां राधः सुरेतस्तुरणे भुरण्यू । शुचि यत्ते रेक्ण आयजन्त सबर्दुघायाः पय उस्रियायाः ॥

tubhyaṃ payo yatpitarāvanītāṃ rādhaḥ suretasturaṇe bhuraṇyū | śuci yatte rekṇa āyajanta sabardughāyāḥ paya usriyāyāḥ ||

When your parents, (heaven and earth), theprotectors (of the world), brought the nutritious and invigorating oblation to you, who are quick in act, and when they offered you the pure and precious milk of the cow.

अध प्र जज्ञे तरणिर्ममत्तु प्र रोच्यस्या उषसो न सूरः । इन्दुर्येभिराष्ट स्वेदुहव्यैः स्रुवेण सिञ्चञ्जरणाभि धाम ॥

adha pra jajñe taraṇirmamattu pra rocyasyā uṣaso na sūraḥ | induryebhirāṣṭa sveduhavyaiḥ sruveṇa siñcañjaraṇābhi dhāma ||

Now is Indra manifested; may he, the over-comer (of his foes), grant us happiness,he, who shines brightly, like the sun of this dawn; may the excellent Soma, being sprinklled upon the plural ceof sacrifice with a ladle, (exhilarate us), by whom, presenting the oblations we had prepared, it was imbibed.

स्विध्मा यद्वनधितिरपस्यात्सूरो अध्वरे परि रोधना गोः । यद्ध प्रभासि कृत्व्याँ अनु द्यूननर्विशे पश्विषे तुराय ॥

svidhmā yadvanadhitirapasyātsūro adhvare pari rodhanā goḥ | yaddha prabhāsi kṛtvyā~ anu dyūnanarviśe paśviṣe turāya ||

When the bright-edged hatchet is ready for its work, the directing priest is able to have the victim bound in the sacrifice; when Indra, you shine upon the days that are appropriated to sacred rites, then (success attends) upon the man who goes with his cart (for fuel), the driver (of cattle), or the active (shepherd).

अष्टा महो दिव आदो हरी इह द्युम्नासाहमभि योधान उत्सम् । हरिं यत्ते मन्दिनं दुक्षन्वृधे गोरभसमद्रिभिर्वाताप्यम् ॥

aṣṭā maho diva ādo harī iha dyumnāsāhamabhi yodhāna utsam | hariṃ yatte mandinaṃ dukṣanvṛdhe gorabhasamadribhirvātāpyam ||

Send hither your horses, the quaffers of the exhilarating libation; overcome, warrior, the adversary plural ndering us of our treasure; when they express with stones, for the increase (of your strength), the delightful, exhilarating, invigorating (Soma), to be overtaken by you, who are swifter than the wind.

त्वमायसं प्रति वर्तयो गोर्दिवो अश्मानमुपनीतमृभ्वा । कुत्साय यत्र पुरुहूत वन्वञ्छुष्णमनन्तैः परियासि वधैः ॥

tvamāyasaṃ prati vartayo gordivo aśmānamupanītamṛbhvā | kutsāya yatra puruhūta vanvañchuṣṇamanantaiḥ pariyāsi vadhaiḥ ||

You did hurl your metal bolt upon the quick-moving (asura), the swift destroyer of foes, that was brought (to you) by Ṛbhu from heaven; when you, who are worshipped by many, striking Śuṣṇa, for the sake of Kutsa, did encompass him with numberless fatal (weapons).

पुरा यत्सूरस्तमसो अपीतेस्तमद्रिवः फलिगं हेतिमस्य । शुष्णस्य चित्परिहितं यदोजो दिवस्परि सुग्रथितं तदादः ॥

purā yatsūrastamaso apītestamadrivaḥ phaligaṃ hetimasya | śuṣṇasya citparihitaṃ yadojo divaspari sugrathitaṃ tadādaḥ ||

When the sun (had emerged) from the struggle with darkness, you did break, wielder of the thunderbolt, the cloud that had been his annoyance, and did under the well-fastened covering in which Śuṣṇa had enveloped him.

अनु त्वा मही पाजसी अचक्रे द्यावाक्षामा मदतामिन्द्र कर्मन् । त्वं वृत्रमाशयानं सिरासु महो वज्रेण सिष्वपो वराहुम् ॥

anu tvā mahī pājasī acakre dyāvākṣāmā madatāmindra karman | tvaṃ vṛtramāśayānaṃ sirāsu maho vajreṇa siṣvapo varāhum ||

Then the vast, powerful, and immoveable earth and heaven animated you, Indra, to glorious needs, and you did hurl down into the waters, with your mightythunderbolt, the everywhere-spreading and destroying Vṛtra.

त्वमिन्द्र नर्यो याँ अवो नॄन्तिष्ठा वातस्य सुयुजो वहिष्ठान् । यं ते काव्य उशना मन्दिनं दाद्वृत्रहणं पार्यं ततक्ष वज्रम् ॥

tvamindra naryo yā~ avo nṝntiṣṭhā vātasya suyujo vahiṣṭhān | yaṃ te kāvya uśanā mandinaṃ dādvṛtrahaṇaṃ pāryaṃ tatakṣa vajram ||

Indra, friend of man, mount the horses whom you cherish, who are fleet as the wind, are easily yoked, and who bear (theri burden) well; you have sharpened the foe-destroying thunderbolt, the slayer of Vṛtra, which inspiring (weapon) Uśanas, the son of Kavi, gave you.

त्वं सूरो हरितो रामयो नॄन्भरच्चक्रमेतशो नायमिन्द्र । प्रास्य पारं नवतिं नाव्यानामपि कर्तमवर्तयोऽयज्यून् ॥

tvaṃ sūro harito rāmayo nṝnbharaccakrametaśo nāyamindra | prāsya pāraṃ navatiṃ nāvyānāmapi kartamavartayo'yajyūn ||

Stop, Sūra, your yellow horses, for this Etaśa, Indra, drags the wheel; having driven those who offer no sacrifices to the opposite bank of the ninety rivers, you compel them (to do) what is to be done.

त्वं नो अस्या इन्द्र दुर्हणायाः पाहि वज्रिवो दुरितादभीके । प्र नो वाजान्रथ्यो अश्वबुध्यानिषे यन्धि श्रवसे सूनृतायै ॥

tvaṃ no asyā indra durhaṇāyāḥ pāhi vajrivo duritādabhīke | pra no vājānrathyo aśvabudhyāniṣe yandhi śravase sūnṛtāyai ||

Indra, bearer of the thunderbolt, preserve us from this (poverty), that is so difficult to be destroyed, and from misfortune in war; grant us riches, conspicuous for chariots, remarkable for horses, for the sake of food, of fame, and of truth.

मा सा ते अस्मत्सुमतिर्वि दसद्वाजप्रमहः समिषो वरन्त । आ नो भज मघवन्गोष्वर्यो मंहिष्ठास्ते सधमादः स्याम ॥

mā sā te asmatsumatirvi dasadvājapramahaḥ samiṣo varanta | ā no bhaja maghavangoṣvaryo maṃhiṣṭhāste sadhamādaḥ syāma ||

Famous for affluence, Indra, never may your favour be withdrawn from us; may food ever sustain us; opulent Maghavan, make us possessors of cattle, and may we, most assiduous in your adoration, be happy, together (with our families).
