[rv-1-113] • 20 श्लोकाः

इदं श्रेष्ठं ज्योतिषां ज्योतिरागाच्चित्रः प्रकेतो अजनिष्ट विभ्वा । यथा प्रसूता सवितुः सवायँ एवा रात्र्युषसे योनिमारैक् ॥

idaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ jyotiṣāṃ jyotirāgāccitraḥ praketo ajaniṣṭa vibhvā | yathā prasūtā savituḥ savāya~ evā rātryuṣase yonimāraik ||

This most excellent luminary of all luminaries has arrived; the wonderful and diffusive manifester (of all things) has been born; in like manner as night is the offspring of the sun, so she becomes the birth-plural ce of the dawn.

रुशद्वत्सा रुशती श्वेत्यागादारैगु कृष्णा सदनान्यस्याः । समानबन्धू अमृते अनूची द्यावा वर्णं चरत आमिनाने ॥

ruśadvatsā ruśatī śvetyāgādāraigu kṛṣṇā sadanānyasyāḥ | samānabandhū amṛte anūcī dyāvā varṇaṃ carata āmināne ||

The white-shining dawn, the parent of the sun, has arrived; dark night has sought her own abode; both allied to the same (sun), immortal, succeeding to each other, and mutually effacing each other's complexion, they traverse the heavens.

समानो अध्वा स्वस्रोरनन्तस्तमन्यान्या चरतो देवशिष्टे । न मेथेते न तस्थतुः सुमेके नक्तोषासा समनसा विरूपे ॥

samāno adhvā svasroranantastamanyānyā carato devaśiṣṭe | na methete na tasthatuḥ sumeke naktoṣāsā samanasā virūpe ||

The path of the sisters is unending; they travel it alternately, guided by the radiant (sun); combined in purpose, though of different forms, night and dawn, giving birth (to all things), obstruct not eachother, neither do they stand still.

भास्वती नेत्री सूनृतानामचेति चित्रा वि दुरो न आवः । प्रार्प्या जगद्व्यु नो रायो अख्यदुषा अजीगर्भुवनानि विश्वा ॥

bhāsvatī netrī sūnṛtānāmaceti citrā vi duro na āvaḥ | prārpyā jagadvyu no rāyo akhyaduṣā ajīgarbhuvanāni viśvā ||

Brilliant guide of the speakers of truth, the many-tinted dawn, is recognized by us; she has opened our doors; having illuminated the world, she has made our riches manifest. Uṣās gives back all the regions (that had been swallowed up by night).

जिह्मश्ये चरितवे मघोन्याभोगय इष्टये राय उ त्वम् । दभ्रं पश्यद्भ्य उर्विया विचक्ष उषा अजीगर्भुवनानि विश्वा ॥

jihmaśye caritave maghonyābhogaya iṣṭaye rāya u tvam | dabhraṃ paśyadbhya urviyā vicakṣa uṣā ajīgarbhuvanāni viśvā ||

The opulent (dawn) arouses to exertion the man bowed down in sleep--one man to enjoyments, another to devotion, another to (the acquisition of) wealth; she has enabled those who were almost sightless to see distinctly. The expansive Uṣas has given back all the regions.

क्षत्राय त्वं श्रवसे त्वं महीया इष्टये त्वमर्थमिव त्वमित्यै । विसदृशा जीविताभिप्रचक्ष उषा अजीगर्भुवनानि विश्वा ॥

kṣatrāya tvaṃ śravase tvaṃ mahīyā iṣṭaye tvamarthamiva tvamityai | visadṛśā jīvitābhipracakṣa uṣā ajīgarbhuvanāni viśvā ||

The dawn rouses one man to acquire wealth, another to earn food, another to achieve greatness, another to sacrifices, another to his own (pursuits), another to activity, and lights all men to their various means of maintaining life. Uṣās has given back all the regions.

एषा दिवो दुहिता प्रत्यदर्शि व्युच्छन्ती युवतिः शुक्रवासाः । विश्वस्येशाना पार्थिवस्य वस्व उषो अद्येह सुभगे व्युच्छ ॥

eṣā divo duhitā pratyadarśi vyucchantī yuvatiḥ śukravāsāḥ | viśvasyeśānā pārthivasya vasva uṣo adyeha subhage vyuccha ||

The daughter of heaven, young, white-robed, the mistress of all earthly treasure, is beheld dissipating the darkness. Auspicious Uṣās,shine upon us today in this (hall of sacrifice).

परायतीनामन्वेति पाथ आयतीनां प्रथमा शश्वतीनाम् । व्युच्छन्ती जीवमुदीरयन्त्युषा मृतं कं चन बोधयन्ती ॥

parāyatīnāmanveti pātha āyatīnāṃ prathamā śaśvatīnām | vyucchantī jīvamudīrayantyuṣā mṛtaṃ kaṃ cana bodhayantī ||

Following the path

उषो यदग्निं समिधे चकर्थ वि यदावश्चक्षसा सूर्यस्य । यन्मानुषान्यक्ष्यमाणाँ अजीगस्तद्देवेषु चकृषे भद्रमप्नः ॥

uṣo yadagniṃ samidhe cakartha vi yadāvaścakṣasā sūryasya | yanmānuṣānyakṣyamāṇā~ ajīgastaddeveṣu cakṛṣe bhadramapnaḥ ||

Uṣās, inasmuch as you have caused the sacred fire to be kindled, inasmuch as you have lighted the world with the light of the sun, inasmuch as you have wakened men to perform sacrifice, you have done good service to the godṣ

कियात्या यत्समया भवाति या व्यूषुर्याश्च नूनं व्युच्छान् । अनु पूर्वाः कृपते वावशाना प्रदीध्याना जोषमन्याभिरेति ॥

kiyātyā yatsamayā bhavāti yā vyūṣuryāśca nūnaṃ vyucchān | anu pūrvāḥ kṛpate vāvaśānā pradīdhyānā joṣamanyābhireti ||

For how long a period is it that the dawns have risen? for how long a period will they rise? still desirous to bring us light, Uṣās pursues the functions of those that have gone before, and, shining brightly, proceeds with the others (that are to follow).

ईयुष्टे ये पूर्वतरामपश्यन्व्युच्छन्तीमुषसं मर्त्यासः । अस्माभिरू नु प्रतिचक्ष्याभूदो ते यन्ति ये अपरीषु पश्यान् ॥

īyuṣṭe ye pūrvatarāmapaśyanvyucchantīmuṣasaṃ martyāsaḥ | asmābhirū nu praticakṣyābhūdo te yanti ye aparīṣu paśyān ||

Those mortals who beheld the pristine Uṣās dawning have passed away; to us she is now visible, and they approach who may behold her in after times.

यावयद्द्वेषा ऋतपा ऋतेजाः सुम्नावरी सूनृता ईरयन्ती । सुमङ्गलीर्बिभ्रती देववीतिमिहाद्योषः श्रेष्ठतमा व्युच्छ ॥

yāvayaddveṣā ṛtapā ṛtejāḥ sumnāvarī sūnṛtā īrayantī | sumaṅgalīrbibhratī devavītimihādyoṣaḥ śreṣṭhatamā vyuccha ||

The beings hostile (to acts of devotion) now withdraw, for she is the protectress of sacred rites, who is manifested for their performance; she is the giver of happiness, the awakener of plural asant voices, the enjoyer of felicity, and provider of food for the gods; most excellent Uṣās dawn today on this (sacrificial hall).

शश्वत्पुरोषा व्युवास देव्यथो अद्येदं व्यावो मघोनी । अथो व्युच्छादुत्तराँ अनु द्यूनजरामृता चरति स्वधाभिः ॥

śaśvatpuroṣā vyuvāsa devyatho adyedaṃ vyāvo maghonī | atho vyucchāduttarā~ anu dyūnajarāmṛtā carati svadhābhiḥ ||

The divine Uṣās dawned continually in former times; the source of wealth, she still rises on this (world); so will she give light hereafter, through future days, for, exempt from decay or death, she goes on in her splendour.

व्यञ्जिभिर्दिव आतास्वद्यौदप कृष्णां निर्णिजं देव्यावः । प्रबोधयन्त्यरुणेभिरश्वैरोषा याति सुयुजा रथेन ॥

vyañjibhirdiva ātāsvadyaudapa kṛṣṇāṃ nirṇijaṃ devyāvaḥ | prabodhayantyaruṇebhiraśvairoṣā yāti suyujā rathena ||

The divine Uṣās lights up with her beams the quarters of the heavens; she has thrown off her gloomy form, and, awaking (those who sleep), comes in her car, drawn by purple steeds.

आवहन्ती पोष्या वार्याणि चित्रं केतुं कृणुते चेकिताना । ईयुषीणामुपमा शश्वतीनां विभातीनां प्रथमोषा व्यश्वैत् ॥

āvahantī poṣyā vāryāṇi citraṃ ketuṃ kṛṇute cekitānā | īyuṣīṇāmupamā śaśvatīnāṃ vibhātīnāṃ prathamoṣā vyaśvait ||

Bringing with her life-sustaining blessings, and giving consciousness (to the unconscious), she imparts (to the world) her wonderful radiance. The similitude of numerous dawns that have gone by, the first of the billiant (dawns that are to come), Uṣās has today appeared.

उदीर्ध्वं जीवो असुर्न आगादप प्रागात्तम आ ज्योतिरेति । आरैक्पन्थां यातवे सूर्यायागन्म यत्र प्रतिरन्त आयुः ॥

udīrdhvaṃ jīvo asurna āgādapa prāgāttama ā jyotireti | āraikpanthāṃ yātave sūryāyāganma yatra pratiranta āyuḥ ||

Arise; inspiring life revives; darkness has departed; light approaches. Uṣās has opened the road for the sun to travel; let us repair to where they distribute food.

स्यूमना वाच उदियर्ति वह्निः स्तवानो रेभ उषसो विभातीः । अद्या तदुच्छ गृणते मघोन्यस्मे आयुर्नि दिदीहि प्रजावत् ॥

syūmanā vāca udiyarti vahniḥ stavāno rebha uṣaso vibhātīḥ | adyā taduccha gṛṇate maghonyasme āyurni didīhi prajāvat ||

The offerer of praise, the reciter of praise, celebrating the brilliant Uṣas, repeats the well-connected words (of the Veda). Possessor of affluence, dawn today upon him who praise you; bestow upon us food, whence progeny may be obtained.

या गोमतीरुषसः सर्ववीरा व्युच्छन्ति दाशुषे मर्त्याय । वायोरिव सूनृतानामुदर्के ता अश्वदा अश्नवत्सोमसुत्वा ॥

yā gomatīruṣasaḥ sarvavīrā vyucchanti dāśuṣe martyāya | vāyoriva sūnṛtānāmudarke tā aśvadā aśnavatsomasutvā ||

May he who has offered the libation obtain, upon the conclusion of his praises, (enunciated), life the wind, (with speed), (the favour of) those Uṣasas who are givers of horses, and of cattle, and of progeny, and who shed light upon the mortal presenting to them (offerings).

माता देवानामदितेरनीकं यज्ञस्य केतुर्बृहती वि भाहि । प्रशस्तिकृद्ब्रह्मणे नो व्युच्छा नो जने जनय विश्ववारे ॥

mātā devānāmaditeranīkaṃ yajñasya keturbṛhatī vi bhāhi | praśastikṛdbrahmaṇe no vyucchā no jane janaya viśvavāre ||

Mother of the gods, rival of Aditi, illuminator of the sacrificer, mighty Uṣās, shine forth; approving of our prayer, dawn upon us. Do you, who are cherished by all, make us eminent among the people.

यच्चित्रमप्न उषसो वहन्तीजानाय शशमानाय भद्रम् । तन्नो मित्रो वरुणो मामहन्तामदितिः सिन्धुः पृथिवी उत द्यौः ॥

yaccitramapna uṣaso vahantījānāya śaśamānāya bhadram | tanno mitro varuṇo māmahantāmaditiḥ sindhuḥ pṛthivī uta dyauḥ ||

Whatever valuable wealth the Uṣās convey is beneficial to the sacrificer and to the praiser. May Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi--ocean, earth, and heaven, be favourable to this our prayer.
