चन्द्रमा अप्स्वन्तरा सुपर्णो धावते दिवि । न वो हिरण्यनेमयः पदं विन्दन्ति विद्युतो वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

candramā apsvantarā suparṇo dhāvate divi | na vo hiraṇyanemayaḥ padaṃ vindanti vidyuto vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

The graceful-movingmoonspeeds along the middle region in the sky; bright golden rays (my eyes) behold not your abidding-plural ce. Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

अर्थमिद्वा उ अर्थिन आ जाया युवते पतिम् । तुञ्जाते वृष्ण्यं पयः परिदाय रसं दुहे वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

arthamidvā u arthina ā jāyā yuvate patim | tuñjāte vṛṣṇyaṃ payaḥ paridāya rasaṃ duhe vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

Those who seek for wealth, obtain it; a wife enjoys (the presence of) her husband, and from their union progeny is engendered. Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

मो षु देवा अदः स्वरव पादि दिवस्परि । मा सोम्यस्य शम्भुवः शूने भूम कदा चन वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

mo ṣu devā adaḥ svarava pādi divaspari | mā somyasya śambhuvaḥ śūne bhūma kadā cana vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

Never, Gods, may this (my ancestry), abiding above in heaven, be excluded (from it); never may we be in want (of a son), the cause of joy (to his progenitors), entitled to libations of the Soma. Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

यज्ञं पृच्छाम्यवमं स तद्दूतो वि वोचति । क्व ऋतं पूर्व्यं गतं कस्तद्बिभर्ति नूतनो वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

yajñaṃ pṛcchāmyavamaṃ sa taddūto vi vocati | kva ṛtaṃ pūrvyaṃ gataṃ kastadbibharti nūtano vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

I implore the first (of the gods), the object of sacrifice, that he will become my messenger, and narrate (my condition to the other deities). Where, Agni, is your former benevolence, what new being now possesses it? Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

अमी ये देवाः स्थन त्रिष्वा रोचने दिवः । कद्व ऋतं कदनृतं क्व प्रत्ना व आहुतिर्वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

amī ye devāḥ sthana triṣvā rocane divaḥ | kadva ṛtaṃ kadanṛtaṃ kva pratnā va āhutirvittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

Gods, who are present in the three worlds, who abide in the light of the sun, where now is your truth, where your untruth, where the ancient invocation (that I have addressed) to you? Heaven and earth, be conscious of (my affliction).

कद्व ऋतस्य धर्णसि कद्वरुणस्य चक्षणम् । कदर्यम्णो महस्पथाति क्रामेम दूढ्यो वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

kadva ṛtasya dharṇasi kadvaruṇasya cakṣaṇam | kadaryamṇo mahaspathāti krāmema dūḍhyo vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

Where, deities, is your observance of the truth, where the (benignant) regard of Varuṇa, where is the path of the mighty Aryaman, (so that) we may overcome the malevolent? Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

अहं सो अस्मि यः पुरा सुते वदामि कानि चित् । तं मा व्यन्त्याध्यो वृको न तृष्णजं मृगं वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

ahaṃ so asmi yaḥ purā sute vadāmi kāni cit | taṃ mā vyantyādhyo vṛko na tṛṣṇajaṃ mṛgaṃ vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

I am he, Gods, who formerly recited (your praise) when the libation was poured out; yet sorrows assail me, like a wolf (that falls upon) a thirsty deer. Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

सं मा तपन्त्यभितः सपत्नीरिव पर्शवः । मूषो न शिश्ना व्यदन्ति माध्यः स्तोतारं ते शतक्रतो वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

saṃ mā tapantyabhitaḥ sapatnīriva parśavaḥ | mūṣo na śiśnā vyadanti mādhyaḥ stotāraṃ te śatakrato vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

The ribs (of the well close) round me, like the rival wives (of one husband); cares consume me, Śatakratu, although your worshipper, as a rat (gnaws a weaver's) threads. Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

अमी ये सप्त रश्मयस्तत्रा मे नाभिरातता । त्रितस्तद्वेदाप्त्यः स जामित्वाय रेभति वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

amī ye sapta raśmayastatrā me nābhirātatā | tritastadvedāptyaḥ sa jāmitvāya rebhati vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

Those which are the seven rays (of the sun), in them is my navel expanded; Trita, the son of the waters, knows that (it is so), and he praises them for his extrication (from the well). Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

अमी ये पञ्चोक्षणो मध्ये तस्थुर्महो दिवः । देवत्रा नु प्रवाच्यं सध्रीचीना नि वावृतुर्वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

amī ye pañcokṣaṇo madhye tasthurmaho divaḥ | devatrā nu pravācyaṃ sadhrīcīnā ni vāvṛturvittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

May the five shedders (of benefits), who abide in the centre of the expanded heavens, having together conveyed my prayers quickly to the gods, (speedily) return. Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

सुपर्णा एत आसते मध्य आरोधने दिवः । ते सेधन्ति पथो वृकं तरन्तं यह्वतीरपो वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

suparṇā eta āsate madhya ārodhane divaḥ | te sedhanti patho vṛkaṃ tarantaṃ yahvatīrapo vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

The rays of the sun abide in the surrounding centre of heaven; they drive back the wolf crossing the great waters from the path. Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

नव्यं तदुक्थ्यं हितं देवासः सुप्रवाचनम् । ऋतमर्षन्ति सिन्धवः सत्यं तातान सूर्यो वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

navyaṃ tadukthyaṃ hitaṃ devāsaḥ supravācanam | ṛtamarṣanti sindhavaḥ satyaṃ tātāna sūryo vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

That new praiseworthy and commended (vigour) is seated in you, ye Gods, (by which) the rivers urge on the waters, and the sun diffuses his constant (light). Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

अग्ने तव त्यदुक्थ्यं देवेष्वस्त्याप्यम् । स नः सत्तो मनुष्वदा देवान्यक्षि विदुष्टरो वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

agne tava tyadukthyaṃ deveṣvastyāpyam | sa naḥ satto manuṣvadā devānyakṣi viduṣṭaro vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

Worthy of praise, Agni, is that your relationship 9with the gods), do you, who are most wise, seated at our (solemnity) worship (the gods), as (at the sacrifice of) Manu.

सत्तो होता मनुष्वदा देवाँ अच्छा विदुष्टरः । अग्निर्हव्या सुषूदति देवो देवेषु मेधिरो वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

satto hotā manuṣvadā devā~ acchā viduṣṭaraḥ | agnirhavyā suṣūdati devo deveṣu medhiro vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

May that wise and liberal Agni, a sage amongst the gods, seated at our rite, as at the sacrifice of Manu, be the invoker of the deities, and offer them oblations. Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

ब्रह्मा कृणोति वरुणो गातुविदं तमीमहे । व्यूर्णोति हृदा मतिं नव्यो जायतामृतं वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

brahmā kṛṇoti varuṇo gātuvidaṃ tamīmahe | vyūrṇoti hṛdā matiṃ navyo jāyatāmṛtaṃ vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

Varuṇa performs the rite of preservation; we desire him as guide of our way; (to him, the repeater of praise) addresses praise with his (whole) heart; may he who is entitled to laudation become our true (support). Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

असौ यः पन्था आदित्यो दिवि प्रवाच्यं कृतः । न स देवा अतिक्रमे तं मर्तासो न पश्यथ वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

asau yaḥ panthā ādityo divi pravācyaṃ kṛtaḥ | na sa devā atikrame taṃ martāso na paśyatha vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

The sun, who is avowedly made the path in heaven, is not to be disregarded, Gods, by you; but you, mortals, regard him not. Heaven and earth be conscious of this (my affliction).

त्रितः कूपेऽवहितो देवान्हवत ऊतये । तच्छुश्राव बृहस्पतिः कृण्वन्नंहूरणादुरु वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

tritaḥ kūpe'vahito devānhavata ūtaye | tacchuśrāva bṛhaspatiḥ kṛṇvannaṃhūraṇāduru vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

Trita, fallen into the well, invokes the Gods for succour; Bṛhaspati, who liberates many from sin, heard (the submission). Heaven and earth, be conscious of this (my affliction).

अरुणो मा सकृद्वृकः पथा यन्तं ददर्श हि । उज्जिहीते निचाय्या तष्टेव पृष्ट्यामयी वित्तं मे अस्य रोदसी ॥

aruṇo mā sakṛdvṛkaḥ pathā yantaṃ dadarśa hi | ujjihīte nicāyyā taṣṭeva pṛṣṭyāmayī vittaṃ me asya rodasī ||

Once, a tawny wolf beheld me faring on my way, and having seen me, rushed upon me, (rearing) as a carpenter, whose back aches (with stooping, standing erect in his work).

एनाङ्गूषेण वयमिन्द्रवन्तोऽभि ष्याम वृजने सर्ववीराः । तन्नो मित्रो वरुणो मामहन्तामदितिः सिन्धुः पृथिवी उत द्यौः ॥

enāṅgūṣeṇa vayamindravanto'bhi ṣyāma vṛjane sarvavīrāḥ | tanno mitro varuṇo māmahantāmaditiḥ sindhuḥ pṛthivī uta dyauḥ ||

By this recitation, may we, becoming possessed of Indra, and strong with multiplied progeny, overcome our foes in battle; and may Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi---ocean, earth and heaven, be gracious to us in this (request).
