. पराशर मुनि once conducted a यज्ञ to annihilate the राक्षसस् altogether. [mh-1-180-1 ] Mahābhārata • Ādi parva . The provocation for पराशर to conduct the यज्ञ was that a राक्षस called कल्माषपाद ate शक्ति , the father of the मुनि and the son of वसिष्ठ . When the यज्ञ had reached its climax पुलस्त्य , पुलह and क्रतु went to पराशर and held conciliatory talks with him, and पराशर , ended the यज्ञ . The अग्नि that he had made to devour the राक्षसस् was discarded on the slopes of the हिमालयस् . According to the पुराणस् that fire, even to this day, continues consuming the राक्षसस् , trees and rocks. (For details see under Kalmāṣapāda and Parāśara)
