प्रसेन and the स्यमन्तक
सत्राजित् and सूर्य (Sun) were friends. Once सत्राजित् requested सूर्य to give him some gift as a token of their friendship. Then सूर्य gave him the स्यमन्तक gem. If that stone was worshipped daily with पूजास् by ब्राह्मणस् it would yield eight loads of gold daily. When once सत्राजित् travelled by air with that gem round his neck the people of द्वारका mistook him for विष्णु . श्री कृष्ण was attracted by the beauty and power of that stone and he asked सत्राजित् that gem for a good price. श्री कृष्ण offered as much money as he wanted and still सत्राजित् did not part with it.
Once प्रसेन went hunting with that gem round his neck and he was attacked and killed by a lion. The lion while carrying the स्यमन्तक was killed by जाम्बवान् and the latter carried the gem to his den and gave it to his children to play with.
When प्रसेन did not return from his hunting and was found later lying dead without the gem the news spread that the stone might have been stolen by कृष्ण after killing प्रसेन . The slander reached the ears of कृष्ण also and he went to the forest in search of the स्यमन्तक . He found the cave of जाम्बवान् and on peeping in found the children of जाम्बवान् playing with the gem. जाम्बवान् attacked कृष्ण and after a grim battle which lasted for several days जाम्बवान् was defeated. When he knew that it was कृष्ण who had defeated him he gave him along with the स्यमन्तक his daughter जाम्बवती also कृष्ण brought the gem and the girl to द्वारका and gave back the gem to सत्राजित् .
