निषाद
[nisada] IAST: NIṢĀDA
A forest dweller. The grand sire of the निषाद tribe living in forests was one निषाद . Those forestdwellers came to be known as निषादस् as they were the descendants of this निषाद . The पुराणिच् story about the origin of निषाद is as follows:--
Once upon a time there lived a King called वेन . A very immoral ruler, he was hated by the people. As dharma declined in the country due to the misrule of वेन the महर्षिस् killed him with दर्भ grass sanctified by मन्त्रस् . Then the महर्षिस् saw dust rising up everywhere and people told them that the poor people, in the absence of king, had turned into thieves and the dust was formed by the onrush of the thieves. To remedy the problem thus created the महर्षिस् churned the thigh of वेन , who had died childless, for a son, and from the thigh was born a male child, dark in colour, dwarfish and with a compressed face. Sadly he asked the ब्रह्मिन्स् ( महर्षिस् ) what he should do. They asked him to sit ( निषीद ) and hence he became निषाद (forest-dweller). His descendants settled down on mount विन्ध्य and they by their sinful lives divested वेन of his sins. वेन was absolved of his sins through the निषादस् , and thus the निषादस् became responsible for the ending of वेन 's sins.
